Garth Brooks

Garth Brooks is an American singer-songwriter. Brooks' integration of rock elements into his recordings and live performances earned him immense popularity. This progressive approach allowed him to dominate the country single and album charts while crossing over into the mainstream pop arena.

Troubled by conflicts between career and family, Brooks officially retired from recording and performing from 2001 until 2009. During this time, he sold millions of albums through an exclusive distribution deal with Walmart and sporadically released new singles. In 2005, Brooks started a partial comeback, and has since given several performances and released two compilation albums.

On October 15, 2009, Garth Brooks announced the end of his retirement. In December 2009, he began a five-year concert deal with the Encore Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Following the conclusion of his residency in Las Vegas, Brooks announced his signing with Sony Music Nashville in July 2014. In September 2014, he began his comeback world tour. His most recent album, Man Against Machine, was released on November 11, 2014 via his new online music store GhostTunes.

Brooks was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on October 21, 2012.

Brooks graduated from Oklahoma State University–Stillwater where he starred on the track team. He later completed his MBA from Oklahoma State and participated in the commencement ceremony on May 6, 2011.

Brooks married his college sweetheart, songwriter Sandy Mahl, on May 24, 1986. They met when Brooks was a bouncer at a bar, and she punched a hole in the bar wall. Brooks and Mahl separated in March 1999, announcing their plans to divorce on October 9, 2000, and filing for divorce on November 6, 2000. The divorce became final on December 17, 2001. Brooks and singer Trisha Yearwood began dating after Brooks's divorce, and married on December 10, 2005, at their home in Oklahoma, marking the second marriage for Brooks and the third for Yearwood.

"The Thunder Rolls" is a song co-written and recorded by Garth Brooks. It was released in April 1991 as the fourth and final single from his album No Fences. "The Thunder Rolls" became his sixth number one on the country chart.

It was originally recorded by Tanya Tucker, but was never released until it appeared on her self-titled 1995 box set. Her version included a third verse which Brooks himself intended to use on his version but did not at the suggestion of producer Allen Reynolds. A modernized cover was recorded by Jet Black Stare, but without the third verse.

The first verse shows a man driving home in torrential rain, from "somewhere that he never should have been." His wife is waiting at home for his return, "praying it's the weather that's kept him out all night."

When the man does return (in the second verse), the woman rushes out to meet him only to smell a perfume on his person, implying that he was with another woman. At this point in time, the lyrics "the thunder rolls" no longer refers to literal lightning and thunder surrounding the pair, but the anger in her heart has reached a boiling point- which is shown in the third verse.

The original recorded version does not include the song's original third verse, most likely due to its graphic nature (the verse hints that the woman plans to kill the man for his infidelity). However, Brooks performs the third verse when he sings the song in concert, so a version containing the third verse can be found on Brooks' album Double Live.

The verse goes as follows:

She runs back down the hallway and through the bedroom door
She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer
Tells the lady in the mirror he won't do this again
'Cause tonight will be the last time, she'll wonder where he's been
