 Dawn's This and That

Take a minute to follow Dawn at her blog and on her social media. It would mean a lot to both of us!

Music has always been my favorite form of self-therapy. No matter what I am feeling, chances are I have a song or playlist to match it.  Feeling a little grumpy – I have a song for that, a little sad and weepy?  Get the tissues ready and click play. Need some music to fall asleep to? I have that covered as well.

As a teenager (ok, really going to show my age here) I was all about Metallica, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses and the like. Then the 90's came along and I discovered Pearl Jam (Still my all time favorite) Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden. I love Nine Inch Nails, Puscifer, Foo Fighters (Fabulous in concert by the way) and Placebo, my list can go on and on.

I have always been a bit of a music snob growing up, If it didn't contain a bit "grrrr" chances are I didn't listen to it, but my tastes have  broadened a bit as I've gotten older, I've mellowed a bit. My kids might say I'm just getting old, but that's a rant for my own blog!

Not to long ago, I was listening to Pandora, grumbling as I normally do because Pandora never plays the actual music I want to hear when all of the sudden I had to stop what I was doing and listen to the most hauntingly beautiful song I've ever heard. That song was 9 Crimes by Damien Rice. That is also the day my Damien Rice obsession began.

Damien is a singer-songwriter from Ireland (my favorite place in the world!) His performing partner for many years was Lisa Hannigan, the combination of their voices was simply magical. His voice is rough and raspy and wonderfully imperfect, hers is soft and almost angelic. Sadly, they no longer perform together but both have continued on performing and making new music, although I'd like to point out (in case Mr. Rice ever comes across this little post – I wish we didn't have to wait so long in between!)

Damien's discography has finally been updated with his release of My Favourite Faded Fantasy, his first full-length album since 2007 when he released two live albums Live at Fingerprints Warts & All, and Live from the Union Chapel. His last studio album, 9, was released in 2006. Damien's debut album, O, was released in 2002.

Damien's music has been in many television shows and movies especially 9 Crimes and The Blowers Daughter. You've probably heard his music and never realized it. Philip Phillips covered 9 Crimes on American Idol, it was used in an episode of True Blood and even Shrek 3.

So if you haven't given Damien a listen, here are my favorites with links for your listening pleasure:
Delicate
9 Crimes
The Blowers Daughter
Rootless Tree
Dogs
To love somebody (BeeGee's Cover) With Ray Lamontagne (Who is also fabulous!)

I'm not much of a music critic, all I know is what makes my hears happy and Damien does :)
