Tony Vegas: Voodoo Sun

Tony Vegas is an Australian artist, born in Sydney, and currently located in Hungary (where he moved 20 years ago).
Earlier he studied classical guitar, and then played electric guitar in various bands.

More recently he has been performing as a DJ at various local clubs in Budapest for the last 6 years, and produces his own original songs, and remixes.

Initially he leaned towards vocal trance and progressive house in his playlists, but since 2 years ago his style has been focused on nu disco.

When he DJs in clubs and creates mixes, he likes to balance his mixes between combining new discovered talent and more popular tunes, and the key things for him are rich melodies and a mystic vibe.

On June 20, he won the DJ Mag Next Generation competition with his "Beach cocktails summer mix". This mix also hit #35 on the Mixcloud indie dance chart on the same day.

His first song "Voodoo Sun" was released on June 24. His upcoming songs "Footprints" and "Waiting for you" were released on October 9 and October 20, respectively.

Tony took the time to answer some questions:

1. When did you first start singing (or playing your instrument)?
I started playing the guitar when I was about 10 years old. I have been writing songs since the age of 13. I started DJ-ing 6 years ago; performing in clubs, creating mixes & producing own dance music.

2. What was the first song you recall singing (or playing)?
Wild Thing by the Troggs. It is one of the first things my guitar teacher taught me that I could play.

3. Who are your musical inspirations?
In terms of writing music, my biggest influence seems to be Pink Floyd. I like to create a mystic aura in my songs, which also have a big, anthem feel.

4. What genre of music do you listen to today?
Today I mainly have been immersing myself in the style of nu disco. This genre is attractive because of its relaxed feel with a slight up-tempo edge, and a return to real instruments such as the electric guitar, bass and drums. It’s great for having a cocktail and a moving your hips by the pool.

5. What embarrassing songs might I find on your MP3 player?
Monty Norman, John Barry - Under The Mango Tree
Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes – Time of my life

6. Where would you most like to perform?
The ultimate would be to play at the Tomorrowland festival in Belgium. It has to be at the pinnacle of events to play at for a DJ.

7. If you weren't a musician, what would you be doing?
I’m a very creative person, so it would have to be some other artistic area like writing or film.

8. What instruments do you play?
Guitar (classical, acoustic and electric), and the keyboards.

9. If you could dabble in another genre of music, what would it be?
Fusion or acid jazz. I like the beats and complexity of this style.

10. What other talents do you have?
I love water sports like surfing and wakeboarding. I also am a skiing fanatic.

11. What is your favorite song to belt out at the bar/in the car/for karaoke?
My hit song for karaoke would have to be Discotheque by U2, it is fun and has a really colourful vocal range.

12. If you could sing a duet with any musician, living or dead, who would it be?
Nat King Cole. He is “unforgettable”.

13. What is the hardest thing about being in the music business?
I think the hardest thing is that you may produce a brilliant song, but it will not be recognized unless you have the right support in terms of marketing. So, the hardest thing is constantly trying to put yourself out there and keeping on promoting yourself.

14. What has been the best advice you have ever been given?
Go for what you want and not what you can get.
