#FridayFive All-time Greatest Country Artists

Time again for the Friday Five! Because I’ve got a full month ahead of 70’s tunes, I thought I would ‘cleanse the palate’ with something different.  Today’s Friday Five will be the top five All time Greatest Country Artists according to Billboard.

George Strait
Known as “King of Country” and is considered one of the most influential and popular recording artists of all time.

Merle Haggard
Helped create the Bakersfield sound, which is characterized by the twang of Fender Telecaster and the unique mix with the traditional country steel guitar sound, new vocal harmony styles in which the words are minimal, and a rough edge not heard on the more polished Nashville sound recordings of the same era.

Willie Nelson
One of the most recognized artists in country music. He was one of the main figures of outlaw country, a subgenre of country music that developed in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound.

Alabama
American country, Southern rock and bluegrass band formed in Fort Payne, Alabama in 1969. Originally operated under the name Wildcountry, but changed their name to Alabama in 1977.

Conway Twitty
He also had success in the rock and roll, rock, R&B, and pop genres. From 1971 to 1976, Twitty received a string of Country Music Association awards for duets with Loretta Lynn. Although never a member of the Grand Ole Opry, he was inducted into both the Country Music and Rockabilly Halls of Fame.

Be sure to check out the playlist today - LOTS more of their great songs!

  2. Not sure how Johnny Cash doesn't make this list?

    1. The man in black didn't make the list because the list was only limited to the top 5. He is certainly a great artist, and if the list had been expanded, he would make an appearance.

    3. I read your reply before you deleted it. It's really too bad that you have completely overlooked the part where it says the list is according to Billboard.

  3. I have to be in a certain mood to listen to country music. But when I am, it sure hits the spot. My dad liked Willie Nelson a lot, so he always reminds me of home. Aside from that, until I reached college I never listened to it. Then I had a roommate who had it on all the time and it started to grow on me. Because of when I was in college, Garth Brooks is my go to when I want country.

    1. I'm a firm believer in all thing in moderation. That's why I enjoy all the genres, because I don't overdo each of them. The older country music appeals more to me than the newer stuff, but I still listen to it all = just not all the time.

  5. I was obsessed with country music for years. As an African American I got a lot of mixed feelings from people about it. Anyways, I am not that into country anymore but I love "Like Red on a Rose" by Alan Jackson. Still one of the sweetest love songs EVER!

    1. I saw Alan Jackson in concert about 20 years ago. It was a very good concert.

  6. You had me at George Strait! My husband has a slight obsession with Reba McEntire. Haha We've really been enjoying Chris Stapleton and were lucky enough to see him perform BEFORE his amazing performance at the CMAs! We also enjoy listening to Cody Jinx and Cadillac Three.

  7. >> . . . "What’s your favorite country tune? Do you have a favorite country artist?"

    MARY! MARY!...
Some years ago, on my now defunct blog 'STUFFS', I participated in a blogfest. We had to answer questions that the blogfest founder asked us. (The list of questions went "up to eleven" as a nod to the movie 'THIS IS SPINAL TAP'.)

Below is the answer I gave to question #4:

4: What is the song that most defines your personality?

Oh, now THAT’S easy -– a piece of pie (‘cause I like pie better’n cake).

In late 1978, when I was 18 or 19 years old, I heard my first Waylon Jennings song. It was played on my Rock ‘N’ Roll radio station of choice –- KMET, ‘The Mighty Met’ -– in Los Angeles. I immediately recognized the song as a personal anthem and within days I bought my first of plenty o' Waylon albums.

I have changed a great deal over the decades since then, but I still can’t think of any other song that better defines my personality. My personal anthem remains...

    1. Ah... good ol' Waylon! And an excellent song choice. Given what I know of you, I'd say it fits you well, too!

I may need to do a post about Waylon sometime soon.

ps pie is da bomb! Marionberry is my fave!
