Never Forget

Time again for Monday’s Music Moves Me! Today is Sept 11. A date that will not be forgotten soon.  I will never forget where I was and what I was doing on that fateful day.  The emotions that I experienced, the feeling of concern for my country, and I will never forget the feeling of patriotism that the entire country seemed to be experiencing. We are a resilient people.

While I was living on the opposite side of the country, I had a personal stake in the events that took place that day. My older brother works in Manhattan. Thankfully, he was able to make it home safely to his wife in Staten Island.

Our country has gone through a few more times of pulling together since then. But today, we honor 9/11. In effort to speed up the page loading, I'm using a playlist.

  1. "Hero" is a song by Enrique Iglesias. It was written by Iglesias, Paul Barry and Mark Taylor. Iglesias released the song to radio on August 13, 2001. After the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, which took place eight days after the song's release on CD, it was one of the few songs chosen by radio DJs in New York City to be remixed with audio from police, firefighters, civilians at Ground Zero, and politicians commenting on the attacks
  2. Five for Fighting's "Superman," released in late 2000, became an unofficial anthem for the first responders in the days following the attacks
  3. "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue" is a song written and recorded by Toby Keith. The song was written in late 2001, and was inspired by Keith's father's death in March 2001, as well as the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States later that year.
  4. Neil Young’s “Let’s Roll” On September 11, 2001, Todd Beamer, a passenger on the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, tried to place a credit card call through an air phone, but was routed to a customer service representative instead, who passed him on to supervisor Lisa Jefferson. Beamer reported that one passenger was killed and that a flight attendant had told him the pilot and co-pilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been injured. He was also on the phone when the plane made a quick and violent turn, a move that had him briefly panicking. Later, he told the operator that some of the other passengers were planning to attack the hijackers and regain control of the aircraft, after they learned about what happened at the World Trade Center and The Pentagon. According to Jefferson, Beamer's last audible words were "Are you ready? Okay. Let's roll."
  5. Alan Jackson's "Where Were You"  The song's lyrics center on reactions to the September 11 attacks in the United States, written in the form of questions. Jackson desired to write a song capturing the emotions surrounding the attacks, but found it difficult to do so.

What are some of your memories of that fateful day?

  1. Mine were as they were that day.....our President conspired with Saudi Arabia to stage 9/11 as an excuse to re-invade Iraq, kill Saddam and control their oil.
16 years later, guess who is STILL in Iraq? 16 years later and still waiting pictures of the "plane" that flew into the Pentagon.

  2. I was at work that day, in upstate New York, when we heard. Our employer got a TV into our cafeteria, where we watched the second tower fall, live on TV. Someone who worked for my company lost his son in the North tower. Later, I found out others I was connected to in some way who died that day. My water aerobics instructor was a nurse, and spent time volunteering at Ground Zero. I will never forget. Listening to "Hero" as I write this comment. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  3. Mary,

I was home as usual. On this morning I slept in a bit. I think I was not well and when I got the kids were watching TV. I didn't think anything of it until I called DH at work. All he could say is turn the news on. I sat in front of the TV with my jaw to the floor the rest of the day. What a horrible way to start your day with such jarring news! You featured two of the same songs that I did. Great minds think alike, right? :D Thanks for sharing & linking with the 4M gals today. Have a good week, my friend!

  4. I was on my way to first divorce hearing and running late and didn't know what had happened. I got to the courthouse and it was closed and that is when I found it. It was an eye-opener.

  6. I was at home when watching the news while I was getting ready for work & then I saw the second plane crash into the second building. I thought I was watching a movie until I checked the channel and then they said what was going on. I was in total awe. I worked on the north side at the time and had to drive past O'Hare airport. It was so very eerie that no planes were in the air & everything was grounded. I got to my job & looked at my boss & I broke down in tears & so did he. Very sad. My husband & I watched CNN for the next 2 wks & didn't move from the TV to say the least. You did a great job on your Post today! Thank you so much & let me say today because tomorrow is not promised... I'm glad I met you and it is almost nice to make new friends. May God bless you & yours! BIG HUGS

  7. Hi Mary.
Well, I'm finally making the rounds for Monday's 9/11 post. I really like the songs you chose. I like how the first one, Enrique Iglesias was recorded shortly before the 9/11 attacks and that NYC DJ's mixed in commentary from police, firemen and politicians with the song.

Someone else used a Five for Fighting song but different than yours. Theirs was "Tuesday". With her post and yours, it's the first time I ever heard of the group.

And I never heard Neil Young's "Let's roll" -- I love that the United Flight 93 heroes have had songs written and recorded in their honor. I used one in my post by Melissa Etheridge that honors Mark Bingham, who joined in with Todd Beamer and the others to storm the cockpit. I can't even begin to imagine the fear and dread they were experiencing.

It's been a heavy week. With the 9/11 anniversary and our focus on the worst attack on our country...and then today's news of the London terrorist attack, it continues to be a very sad week. I definitely remember where I was when the news broke of the World Trade Center attack. I had the TV on while I was getting ready for work. I was an advertising sales rep with Time Warner at the time and when I got to work, all of us were just stunned and in disbelief, talking among ourselves. It was Tuesday morning and that meant the weekly sales meeting. Our Sales Manager (Ross Newsome) walked into the conference room and in his cold callous way said nothing about the attack other than this: "Have any of you received cancellations from clients because of what's happening this morning?...If and when you do, I need to know about it right away."
Are you kidding? We all just looked at each other, shocked and dismayed that this man, who is supposed to be (a) a "leader" of our sales team and (b) a human being, had nothing to say about this horrendous attack other than address his concern for advertising cancellations and losing revenue. And that's all that was said by him, he continued on with business as usual for the meeting and then ended it with "Get to work". I always hated that man but I hated him even more that day. (I included his name here just so it can be publicly noted in writing somewhere on the internet what a true asshole Ross Newsome is).

Anyway, it was brought to my attention this morning that today is September 15th and BOTB day. I totally forgot about it. I forgot about BOTB and I forgot that it was the middle of the month already! It's been insane this week here on the homefront and it's going to be another crazy day so I'm not going to be able to post a battle...even though I had one planned for today. Just didn't have time to put it together. I'll use it for next month's battle. I'll be making the rounds to check out all the battles but it won't be today. "See" you soon back here at your place.

    Have a good weekend Mary.
