Rockin' Autumn

Another Monday is upon us, and you know what that means!  That’s right, time for Monday’s Music Moves Me! Today the powers that be for the 4M group have assigned us a theme. They are looking for songs about Autumn.  Well, Rocktober takes precedence for me, and do you know how difficult it is to find rock songs about Autumn?

Even trusty Google came back with the response “Good luck with this one!” as it handed me a list of Death Metal that after perusal, I realized there wasn’t anything really related to Autumn in that list. Gee thanks, Google!

Left to my own devices, I did some more research and digging and am hoping to pass these five songs off as Autumn songs that rock.  Again, I am using a playlist to help with the speed of page loading.

  1. Moody Blues – Forever Autumn - written by Jeff Wayne, Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass. The original melody was written by Wayne in 1969 as a jingle for a Lego commercial. The best-known version is the recording by Justin Hayward from the album Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. Wayne wanted to include a love song on the album that sounded like "Forever Autumn", and he decided that the best course of action was to simply use the original song. Wayne chose Hayward, of The Moody Blues, to sing it saying that he "wanted that voice from 'Nights in White Satin'".
  2. The Kinks – Autumn Almanac - written by Ray Davies and recorded by the rock group The Kinks in 1967. "Autumn Almanac" has since been noted for being an "absolute classic", "a finely observed slice of English custom", and a "weird character study", and praised for its "mellow, melodic sound that was to characterize the Kinks' next phase..." Some have placed this and other Davies compositions in the pastoral-Romantic tradition of the poetry of Wordsworth, among others.
  3. Yo la tengo – Autumn Sweater - an American indie rock band formed in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1984. Since 1992, the lineup has consisted of Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, and James McNew. In 2015, original guitarist Dave Schramm rejoined the band and appears on their fourteenth album, Stuff Like That There.
  4. Manic Street Preachers – Autumn song - Welsh alternative rock band, formed in 1986 in Blackwood, Caerphilly and consisting of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore. They are often colloquially known as the Manics.
  5. Billy Talent - Fallen Leaves - the third single released from the Canadian rock group Billy Talent's second album, Billy Talent II.

Whew! Made it through this challenge!  How did I do?

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked and Curious as a Cathy.  Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.

  1. Hey Mary,
You definitely did have a challenge in keeping with TWO themes: Autumn and Rocktober! We both picked the Moody Blues and the Kinks.
Autumn Sweater is an interesting song. Never heard of the band.
I just heard Manic Street Preachers on someone else's blog. Never heard of them before until now either. I like their sound.
As for Billy Talent and the Fallen Leaves song: that was a bit weird. Very strange video. What was with the chicken??? Lol. I didn't care for that song. Too loud and annoying for me this early in the morning...I'm old, after all...

Great job Girl! You rocked it all the way through...
    Have a great week,

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. The Billy Talent song is about one person who has gone to the grim district of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver, British Columbia and then becomes a heroin addict. He then loses his friends due to this addiction.

Let's hope we have a better week this week! Although I did accidentally sleep in today. hmmm. So much going on around me, things that I can't talk about publicly, but are very stressful. Hopefully, I will get that Thursday piece written this week.

Thanks for dropping by! I will be around to visit soon, I promise!

  2. Mary,

You tied together two themes beautifully right here with Monday's Mewsic Moves Me, my friend. The last three songs on your playlist are new-to-me. Like, Michele I found "Autumn Sweater" interesting and of these newbie tunes this one is my favorite of the three. By the end of October, we'll certainly need to pull the sweaters and sweats out of storage, won't we? Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me today, my friend!

    1. Oh goodness, Cathy!

I woke up to snow this morning. It's still snowing. I sure that doesn't last long as I'm not quite ready for it yet.

Most of these songs were new to me as well. It was a tough one this week, but I managed to pull it off.

      Thanks for stopping by!

    2. Mary,

Gee, I hope the snow is all gone and the weather isn't too cool for ya. You did a fabulous job with the theme. It's hard to not repeat songs sometimes but it's just the fun of sharing with friends who love mewsic. Have a great day!

    1. Thanks, Darla!

Time to vote! I think there's also a vote for MTV awards as well. I forget which one, I just know that the Foo Fighters were nominated three times, so of course I had to cast my vote :)

Good to see you here again.

  4. You did fine! The Justin Haywood song was perfect for the theme. Had thought about the Kinks song. I have heard of Yo a tengo but never (knowingly) heard one of their songs. Mellow! Manic Street Preachers was a group I had never even heard of. But Billie Talent? Any song with a video that has chickens in it is a winner for me. Winner, winner, chicken dinner? Oh never mind! So quirky, I loved it! Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. LOL Alana!

The Billy Talent song is actually a pretty dark song if you listen closely to the words. But I thought they rocked it pretty good in comparison to what I could dig up. I had only heard of Billy Talent, The Kinks, and The Moody Blues before, the others were new to me.

      Thanks for stopping in!

    1. LOL Marie!

It was doubly tough for me today, but it was a good challenge! You're right, we need to exercise these brains of ours from time to time, otherwise what good does it do us to have them?

Thanks for stopping by! Looking forward to rockin' with you again next week. I've got a super fun battle of the bands lined up.
