The Color Battle of the Bands

In early December, I was asked to pick a theme for today’s Mondays Music Moves Me. As many of you know, I was in the middle of packing for my move when the request came in.  Not being one to let anyone down, I pulled a theme out of the air without giving it much thought. At the time, I didn’t even know where I was going to be living, let alone if I would have internet access.  I didn’t even look at the calendar to see what the date would be.

I figured my theme would be fairly broad so we could get a nice variety of songs to listen to. I mean, there are literally thousands of songs with different colors in the titles.  Then, my good friend Michele asked me what the theme would be (because Xmas Doily hadn’t updated her page yet) and she asked me how I was going to use it for the battle of the bands. I hadn’t even factored in the battle!

So a few thoughts came to me as I was packing and moving. I thought about picking a whimsical tune “Purple People Eaters”...  and I thought about using “Behind Blue Eyes”“Purple People Eaters” would have been fun, but would anyone really take me serious?  “Behind Blue Eyes” uncovered a variety of different covers.  But then I thought about Pete Townshend, and thought I should go yet a different route.

Instead of using a particular color, I gave some thought about the word by itself. Instantly, I thought of that wonderful tune by Chicago.

Colour My World

Well, it turns out that I was not able to find a cover of that song fit for a battle. But I did discover a few different tunes with the same title. Interesting…

After a few listens I realized that the Westlife and Backstreet Boys version sounded too identical. Yes, I even played both videos at the same time for comparison. Scratch that idea.

Tokyo Ghoul has a song with the same title, but I really didn’t have anything to pair it up with.

After a few more listens I finally came up with my contenders for the battle.

Contender # 1 Petula Clark

Contender # 2 Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Please vote for either Petula Clark or Priscilla Queen of the Desert in the comments.  Voting will end on January 21, 2018 at 6pm EST with results being posted on January 22

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands as well. You can find a current list on Stephen’s blog (you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop on his blog).

  1. Hey Girlfriend, your friend evidently didn't stop by my blog because your theme has been up since right after you told me. If you go right now you will see its until the end of February & the whole month of December Christmas tunes I had plenty of room to put dates all the way until yours. So you've been up for a while. Wow, I thought you meant actual colors not the word color... oh well, still the same I guess. As far as yours hmmmm I think I like Petula Clark!!! Goodness I haven't heard that tune in ages. hehehe Well, hope you're all settled in and doing well. HUGS XMASDOLLY.... not Doily... if you'll see my picture for my button is a Christmas Dolly... my mother's in fact. Love her to pieces.. hehehe

I'm seeing that you aren't big on details here, but I do feel the need to defend my friend. You did have my name up on your page (or rather a version of my name) with a theme to be announced later. I DID email you the very day you asked me for a theme, but it took a good 2 weeks and a SECOND email for you to see the theme I had chosen. But since day one, I've left multiple comments on your pages and even mentioned it once or twice via email that my name is BURRIS not BURGIS or even BURGES. Funny how you quickly get upset if I call you XLAXDOLLY or XMASDOILY. In my defense, I did not leave your name up on my sidebar for 6 to 8 weeks misspelled.

As for the theme, I left it to interpretation. If you get a chance to actually READ this page, I mention the other songs that I had considered for today.

I do appreciate the efforts you put in with the Monday Music Moves Me bloghop. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and cast your vote for Petula.

  2. HiYa, MARY, MARY, QUITE EXTRAORDINARY!

It was interesting to follow your thought process in putting this BOTB installment together.

I had never heard this song before, but I was sure I'd be voting for Petula over Priscilla because Pet I know and like, while Pris I don't know from Adam.

But, to my surprise, I'm voting for PRISCILLA.
Petula's recording sounded kind of "rackety" to me. What was that, a sitar? Sitars, Bagpipes and Flying Monkeys -- three things I don't like the sound of.

PRISCILLA (whoever she is) had a fuller, more musically balanced recording, to my ears.

    1. Hey there Stephen Dawlin'!

I thought it would be interesting to share the process of finding proper contenders and such for the battles. This one sure was a process!

So, not interested in the sitar or bagpipes? I guess I'll forget about Red Hot Chili Pipers then. Flying Monkeys would have been interesting as well. I'm trying to remember if I saw flying monkeys in a David Hasselhoff video.

I think Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is a musical, rather than an individual such as Petula Clark, it's the cast doing the music here. Or, I hope it is. Either way, I figured it to be a good match up, and sure enough.. to ballots cast, and it's already a tie!

Thanks for dropping by! Have a wunnerful week :)

  4. Hadn't heard this song in ages--brings back memories of those days. The Priscilla version is good, but a bit show tuney in a Glee sort of way. I like Pet's version.

Give my vote to Petula Clark.

  6. Mary,

Great to have you in the "Spotlight Dancer" seat on Monday's Mewsic Moves Me, my friend. I liked your theme choice and it's one that can easily be repeated without ever getting dull. I like how you tied with your BoTB. I did the same thing. Can we say, "Two great minds think alike!" You know, I don't know if I remember this song or not. Honestly, when I saw the two names I thought I'd go with Petula Clark but I actually preferred Priscilla. I'm not sure if it's her vocals or just the overall arrangement of the song. Which ever it is, I'm giving my vote to PRISCILLA! Have a good day, my friend.

    1. Hey there Cathy!

I like a theme that can have many interpretations. If we all played the same tunes week after week, it would be rather boring. I don't know that I had heard this song before I started putting the post together, but I think I may give it a few more listens before I grow tired of it. Thanks for stopping by to give that queen of the desert another vote!

It's fun coming up with the various themes. This one was rather broad, but sometimes I like those that give a bit of a challenge as well. Thanks for stopping by to cast your vote.

  8. Happy New Year, Mary! Hopefully, everything went well with your move and you're settled in. ☺ I remember this song from way back and have to go with Petulia Clark's familiar version. The other one is a bit too "Glee" like for my taste.

  10. Mary, Mary! Hey girl, how's it going? Glad to hear you got all settled in. I was wondering how your move went. I have had a really, hmm, how do I say it? Tough, tough I guess would be the word... a tough end of the year and a very slow start to the new one. I'm still working on my Color post for 4M but since it's so late in the week, I'm just going to save it for a freebie week. It's a fabulous theme and I'm enjoying putting it all together. I didn't have a chance to put a battle together though so will have to jump back in next month.

Wow, what a cool creative process for choosing your battle in keeping with your cool color theme! I have never heard that song before either but I really like Petula Clark's version. So I'm casting my vote for her.

And hey, thanks for defending me! I really appreciate that. I actually did start working on my color post after you told me your spotlight theme, which seems like forever ago, but then the proverbial shit hit the fan and life just took me on a whirlwind ride so I just got back to it the other day. Like you said, there are a ton of songs with color in the title so I was just going to put together a playlist of my favorites but holy-cannoli, I like a lot of color songs! I'm sure I can get it finished by the next freebie date...which I'm thinking may be next Monday, but this time I haven't made it over to check out the theme list... 😐

I'm hoping to spend a good chunk of tomorrow (today) making the rounds and getting back to "normal"...after I get some sleep. I was up for more than 48 hours and trying to catch up on some sleep but before I pass out I wanted to be sure to come by your place.

    Talk soon! And thanks again...

I've been wondering where you were. I hadn't seen any recent posts from you on your blog or on facebook and was beginning to worry. Sure hope that everything is alright at home. This past year sure has been a rough one, hasn't it? I pray that it gets better for you soon and you are able to get some much needed rest.

I've got your vote for Petula Clark counted. I think you are right, Monday is a freebie, but even if it weren't just run with it! No one will mind. I'm curious to see your colorful playlist (and listen to it as well!)

Thanks for coming by. I sincerely hope things start looking up for you soon.

    2. Oh Girl, you might be sorry that you're looking forward to my color playlist. It's ridiculously long!!! BUT on the other hand, it is really good music so just plug and play! :)
And thanks for being concerned for me. I appreciate that. Didn't mean for anyone to worry. Just went underground for awhile...
