Guardians of the Galaxy Mixtapes Plus #BOTB Results!

Today we have a spotlight dancer, Alana from Rambling with AM.  She has chosen the theme for today as “Themes of movies or TV shows!”.  I can tell you I struggled with decision here.

At first, I thought about sharing the soundtrack for “This is Spinal Tap”, which was released in 1984. But thought it might be too obscure and outrageously dumb for you, my readers, to appreciate.

Next, I thought about sharing the soundtrack to “Heavy Metal” which was an animated cult film interweaves six visionary stories of science fiction and fantasy released in 1981. But, I know that many of you don’t care for the Heavy Metal genre on such a full scale.

Instead, I am taking a ‘safer’ route today.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits-Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand-with the galaxy's fate in the balance.

OOPS! Almost forgot!

I need to share results of the latest Battle of the Bands.

After I had a dismal turnout for my February 1 Battle of the Bands, Mr Stephen T McCarthy challenged me to find more voters for my Mid-Month Battle. So I took that challenge and am happy to report that more voters were found.  I sincerely hope that they all return for my March 1 battle as well (and that they visit the other participants, too!)

Feb 15 had us dancing and drinking Tennessee Whiskey. Here are the results, including my own vote for Whiskey Lane:

Chris Stapleton with 30 votes
Whiskey Lane with 35 votes
Plus 12 poor saps who got lost in the stupor and didn’t cast a vote

See you all again on March 1 for another fun battle!

While I enjoy the music from the Heavy Metal movie, I tend to listen to these mixtapes more frequently.

It certainly was a lot of fun. I haven't scrolled back through all of the other battles to see if it is a record, but if not - it certainly comes close to one.

  5. Mary,

The soundtracks for both films are excellent. We finally saw both flicks in the past year, too. I liked the first one better than the second. It looks like I sided with the loser in your BoTB. :( Thanks for sharing the dance floor with me today, dearie. Have a good week!

    1. Cathy,

The only losers in the battles are those who don't vote. This was a close one all the way through to the very end, when Whiskey Lane managed to pull ahead. See you Thursday for another battle!

Hey, who you callin' "smart", MARY?! You insinuatin' intelligence or sumthin'?!

I love and own 'SPINAL TAP'. That movie is a hoot 'n' a half! My Rock Star cousin, Johnny, turned me onto it way back when.

After repeated viewings, I almost love those boys as much in 'A MIGHTY WIND'. I'm sure you've seen that one, too, right?

Hokey-Smoke! Incredible turnout -- and incredible Battle, also. I mean, to have 65 votes submitted and only a 5-vote differential, that's the mark of a great Battle. Nicely done, MMQE.

The only person who might have ever come close in total turnout would be Lee, during one of his BOTB / A 2 Z combinations. But above, even Lee said he thinks you've set the record, so you must have.

Gee, and every time I put together a Battle, I'm just hoping for maybe 17 total votes.

Well, see ya again in a couple of days. My next BOTB installment will be simple and straightforward, but I think it'll also be a very close race.

    1. This would be a case of 'it's so bad that it's good' Much like those secret indulgences that we don't discuss publicly - such as Bieber Fever.

Am hoping for another great turnout this week. Have a little battle of the sexes that will be taking place. Gonna see who can be a better punk - male or female.

Am hoping that some of these visitors will take the time to visit the rest of the group as well. I'm all about sharing the love.

      ~Mary

ps gonna look up A Mighty Wind. Don't think that I've heard of it until now.

    2. Anyone suffering from Bieber Fever should be put down out of compassion. They shoot horses, don't they?

      >>... Gonna see who can be a better punk - male or female.

Ha! I'm pretty sure we know the answer to that already but, what the hey, let 'er rip.

You've nearly convinced me to soon run with an idea I've been kicking around for about a month now. It would be a "Twisted BOTB" which would include Joan Jett. I'd like to see the little poseur get her arse kicked in a Battle between the "toughies". The only problem is... I'm afraid Joan would get her heinie kicked TOO badly (i.e., shutout).

      Hmmm... well, food for thought.

Psst, if you ain't a-skeered of no shutout, I'll be happy to give it to you and let you run wid it. Ha! (I wanna see someone do it, but I don't want to risk the shutout myself. I'm like the kid who says to another, "Here's a sharp stick. Why don't you go poke that big bully with it." I'm a stinker, ain't I?)

    3. Hmmm I do like me some Joan Jett. In fact, I used her in my Feb 1 battle. She lost to Lou Gramm 4-2. You know who else likes Joan Jett? Debbie D. But since she's bowed out of the battles... I might just take on your little battle. I like running with sharp sticks and playing in the freeway. Keeps a person agile.

BTW. I took a peek at the trailer for 'A Mighty Wind'. I think I'm going to watch it. I could use a good laugh these days. Can't go too far wrong with that cast. I'll be sure to take a double dose of cold meds to make the experience that much more enjoyable.

  8. >>... I'll be sure to take a double dose of cold meds to make the experience that much more enjoyable.

Oh, for sure. Add a little Tennessee Whiskey, smoke a little Cheech y Chong, snort some caraway seeds and you'll be right in the pocket!

Now there's another BOTB idea: A song from SPINAL TAP versus a song from A MIGHTY WIND.

Yeah, I remember Doglady Debbie using Joan Jett in BOTB not too long ago, as well. I can't remember who the competitor was and the outcome of that Battle, but I think I had something snarkastic to say about Joan in both instances. (Me just being me. ...Hey, it's a lousy job but somebody's gotta do it! If someone's gotta be me, it might as well be me, I suppose.)

Oh, wait! I think Debbie used Joan against Suzi Quatro and Joan won. ...But I could be mistaken, like I was once before (the night of April 23, 1983).

Hey, I think we might have a deal here. Lemme give it one more thought, and if I still can't muster the courage to do it (and I protly can't), then I'll pass it on to the more courageous you.

Even though it's one of Joan's best known songs, there's no doubt in my mind that she'll get clobbered. I could live with a blowout, but it's the "shutout" potential that makes me twitchy. The Battle has a pretty cool theme, though, and it's definitely rough 'n' tumble, energetic 'n' upbeat.

    1. I consulted the battle records. Debbie did use Joan against Suzi Quatro. But, similar to the night of April 23, 1983, you are mistaken as to the outcome. It was a tie.

      >>... Iggy Pop versus Patti Smith?

Nope, but that does sound interesting.

I guess I should clarify. The original artist for the song I am using is a punk band, but the contenders are not. They've just put their own spin on the song. One contender just happens to be a little more known than the other, but the lesser known does a well enough job that I hope it's enough to keep them in the fight.

My battle on the 15th is taking us back to the early 70s, unless I change my mind and go with another idea from the later 70s.

  9. What a great voting turnout! And it cracks me up both that some folks forgot to vote and that anyone thinks the awesome movie that is "Heavy Metal" really featured heavy tunes. You should get a load of Rammstein. Heh... By the way, I started to type "Hammerstein" but am glad I looked it up first because Hammerstein is an authentic German polka band! How ironic is that? Sometimes I crack myself up. Be well!

  10. Holy Crap Girl! These are some awesome mix tapes!!! You have to know that I love 'em! Like seriously, kickass.
Although honestly, i'm not a sci-fi or fantasy person and I have no desire to see Guardians of the Galaxy. That genre just does nothing for me. However, I'll listen to your mix tape playlists endlessly! I can't even begin to say which songs are my favorites as there are so many that I really dig.
Sooo good! And in answer to your question: as far as I'm concerned you didn't play it too safe. I probably wouldn't have like the Heavy Metal one all that much and Nah on Spinal Tap. So your choice here is right up my alley as far as the music goes...

Re: your BOTB results: I went with Chris Stapleton on that one so my guy didn't win. But like I mentioned in my comment, I liked Whiskey Lane too so I'm way cool with the result. :)
You mentioned 12 "poor saps" who didn't vote: Don't you hate that?! I hate when someone comes and says "I'm going with the original, all the way" and I'm like "ah, that's not one of the choices..." I don't get it..

Hope you're having a great week. Thanks for these fantastic playlists! Will be listening to them often!

    1. Hey Michele!

I do hate it when people don't vote. I get stupid comments such as I've never heard this before, it sounds interesting. but they don't bother to leave a vote.

We'll see what tomorrow brings. Battling out a song from The Offspring.

I watched that Movie that Stephen suggested. I not only lost 90 minutes of my life, but I think I lost a few more brain cells as well. It was like a trainwreck that I just couldn't stop watching.

Off to do a load of laundry before the snow returns. Catch you tomorrow!
