Love Me Two Times Battle of the Bands

Welcome to the first battle of the bands for this month! After the last A to Z challenge, I was feeling a bit burnt out and needed to cut back on the quantity of posts for a minute. I am happy to report that I am returning to the twice per month schedule for the battles. Please join myself and my cohorts in this really fun blogfest (See link to Stephen’s blog below for participants in battle of the bands posts)

It’s February. The month of Love. Sometimes I think I’m a bit jaded when it comes to love, other times not so much. And since it’s the month of Love, I’ve chosen an appropriate rockin’ song :)

Back in the early 90s, the movie “The Doors” came out. The guy I was dating at the time had a huge fascination with them (as well as Heart). Needless to say, I heard their music quite a bit during that time period in my life.

Fast forward to the 2010’s. I was dating yet another guy. He had a love fest with the RockBand game franchise, and a selection of The Doors music was added to the DLC.  Yup, it was played many times a week, and once again The Doors infiltrated my life.

‘Love Me Two Times’

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

"Love Me Two Times" is a song by the American rock band the Doors. It first appeared on their second studio album Strange Days. It was edited to a 2:37 length and released as the second single (after "People Are Strange") from that album, and reached number 25 on the charts in the United States.
Ray Manzarek played the final version of this song on a harpsichord, not a clavichord. Manzarek described the instrument as "a most elegant instrument that one does not normally associate with rock and roll."
"Love Me Two Times" was considered to be somewhat risqué for radio airplay, being banned in New Haven for being "too controversial," much to the dismay of the band.
The song was written by guitarist Robby Krieger. According to band members, the lyrics were about a soldier or sailor on his last day with his girlfriend before shipping out, ostensibly to war (Vietnam). Ray Manzarek described the song as "Robby [Krieger]'s great blues / rock classic about lust and lost, or multiple orgasms, I'm not sure which."

In researching covers for this song, I found a few acoustic versions, but I felt that they just didn’t do the song proper justice.

So I dug a little deeper to present to you today’s contenders.

Contender # 1 Joan Jett

Contender # 2  Lou Gramm

Please vote for either Joan Jett or Lou Gramm in the comments.  I’ll keep the voting open until Sunday, February 11 with results posted on Monday, February 12.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands as well. You can find a current list on Stephen’s blog (you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop on his blog).

  1. Mary,

I did not know your song choice. The Doors is one of those bands I really do not know a lot about despite their popularity and years as a group. Although, I know Jim Morrison by name I didn't know (or maybe I forgot) that he was the founding vocalist (1965). Anywho, of the two covers I found I enjoyed the more bluesy rendition of contender 2. So give my vote to Lou Gramm! Gr8 showdown, my friend!

    1. Thanks, Cathy!

Perhaps one day I'll do a more in depth write up on The Doors.

  2. I was a Doors fan and still enjoy hearing their music. Strange Days was maybe my favorite Doors album--it had a juggler on the cover!

Before listening to the versions you offered I figured my vote would go to Gramm because I'm not much of a Joan Jett fan. But after listening I'll have to say that I really liked the spirit and drive of Jett's version.

Give my vote to Joan Jett.\

    1. Thanks for giving Joan a chance to win you over with this one. Sometimes not knowing the contenders really helps with the voting.

  3. >>... "DON'T STEAL MY SONG CHOICE!"

Whew! That was a close call, MARY! I very nearly used this song in my 'Battle Of The Bands' installment today. I had it scheduled to post automatically and everything. But last night I had a dream that warned me to choose a different song, and so first thing this morning, I changed my post entirely and went with 'HARLEM NOCTURNE' instead.

That was a close call! Thank God for prophetic dreams, eh?

Nah. I'm just kidding. ...Actually, last night I dreamed I'd gone to a fancy, glittery pink bar to see the first game in the Super Bowl series. (Yeah, in the dream, the Super Bowl was a series of championship games, like the World Series.) And some strange guy stole my cell phone off the bar but then returned it due to a guilty conscience. And I overpaid the waitress by four dimes, and she insisted I take them back, even though I told her to keep them.

And some drunk was passed out, sitting on the floor, so a waiter with a club in his hand poured a whole pitcher of water over the drunk's head, and after about 10 seconds he started to come to, just as some other bar customer told the waiter he should hit the guy on the head with his club.

I then decided to find a different bar to watch the first game of the Super Bowl series, and as I was leaving with my dog walking beside me, a waitress wearing a white bikini top bent over to pick something up, and I glanced over to try to get a look down her top but it was too dark down there to see anything. So my dog and I continued walking toward the front door, and that's when I woke up: 6:57 A.M.

Uhm... was that TMDI? Ha! (Translation: Too Much Dream Information? Ha!)

Oh, was I supposed to write something about this Battle?

    Let's see...

Joan Jett? Miss Joan "Not-An-Original-Musical-Bone/Thought-In-Her-Body" Jett? Nah. Make mine a double of LOU GRAMM on the rocks with a lemon twist. He really did something different with the song, and I dug it. Very Bluesy. He even sounds like Howlin' Wolf in places and, Mary, you know I loves me some Howlin' Wolf!

Hokey-Smoke! I can't believe that was Lou Gramm! I listened twice just for the pleasure of it. That was some wolfy sounding guttural stuffs. Lou Gramm? Are you SURE?! I thought I hated Lou Gramm. Well, I guess I'll have to sleep on this turn of events. God help me!

    1. What an exciting dream! Tell me, in your dream, did the Eagles win?

I'm so happy that I picked two artists that you can't stand. It makes for an interesting scenario. Of course, I could have picked two artists that you absolutely love - but then you'd be torn over who to vote for. (Maybe next battle - the song choice is still up in the air)

Thanks for the giggle this morning. Brightened my day!

    2. MMQE, sadly, I was not shown in the dream who the winner of the Super Bowl game would be. (Or the first game of the Super Bowl series, that is.)

However, my best guess is it was saying that betting "four dimes" on the Eagles would be "overpaying".

Not that I would EVER root for the Patriots to win a game, mind you.

  5. Hi Mary,
Oh boy, the Doors! They were a big part of my life too. I had a friend that was super into the Doors and it seemed like we listened to them all the time, but it probably wasn't more than a season in reality. I remember listening to them a lot of the time when we were shut in due to the harsh Buffalo winter weather and the crappy cold rainy days. I find that I often associate Doors music with dark and dreary and some of that probably has to do with the weather association but a lot of it has to do with Jim Morrison himself: I read his biography (No One Here Gets Out Alive) and a bunch of his poetry so there was plenty of darkness there. My very favorite Doors song is Riders on the Storm and I love the dark feeling that it evokes. I always wish it were dark and rainy when that song comes on. It just needs to be dark and rainy for that song so in my head it's dark and rainy when I hear it because it hardly ever rains in Austin Texas! (I sure miss that dreary weather from up north!)...

Anyway, I'm giving my vote to Lou Gramm. I really liked his version of Love Me Two Times. GREAT song pick for this battle.

    Go Eagles!

    1. Hey Michele!

It's funny how some songs or artists just become soundtracks of our lives. I'm still debating which song I want to use for the next battle. I have a few in mind, I just need to narrow it down. I seem to be having the problem quite a bit lately. Still working on the decision about what to post for tomorrow.

Thanks for dropping by! Go Eagles (or as they say in Philly... Go Iggles!)
