Musical Crossovers

Time flies when we’re having fun! We are having fun, aren’t we? I know that I am, and I sure hope that you are. Can you believe we’re into the month of June already? I better get my Christmas decorations out now because at this rate, it’ll be next week!

It’s Monday, and you know what that means, right?  Time for Monday’s Music Moves Me!

Before we get into today’s post, I wanted to make sure you had the opportunity to check out the latest Battle of the Bands - Feral Cat Edition.  If you haven’t voted in the battle yet, I would truly love it if you would. The battle ends on June 10, so there’s time to get your vote in.  Just click the link and a fresh window will open up. You won’t have to worry about losing your place here :)

This month, our themes have been chosen by Alana over at Ramblin’ with AM She’s given us some real good challenging themes this month!

The theme for today is "Crossover" Songs done by a group or singer known primarily for one type of music, but in another type. For example, a country singer has a rock hit, or vice-versa.

At first, I thought this was going to be a breeze. I often find covers of songs done by artists of a different genre when researching for battle of the bands.

An example of this would be Linkin Park covering Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep”

But then I got to thinking a little deeper. What about those artists who started as one genre and crossed over into another.   And, this is how I came up with today’s setlist.

We have:

Steven Tyler - the lead singer of Aerosmith. Known as the ‘Demon of Screamin’ due to his high screams and his wide vocal range.  He managed to cross over to country

Aaron Lewis - lead singer and founding member of the alternative rock group, Staind.  He has also crossed over to country.

Darius Rucker - lead singer and founding member of the rock group, Hootie & The Blowfish. He, too, crossed over to country.

Shania Twain - known primarily as a country music artist, crossed over to pop.

Andrea Bocelli - Italian Opera singer, crossed over to pop.

Bon Scott - Lead singer for rock group AC/DC. Before he became part of AC/DC, he was a co-lead singer (the group featured 2 lead singers at once) for the pop group, The Valentines.

Thanks, Alana, for this fun challenge!

Can you think of any other artists that crossed genres?  I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.

  1. There are so many crossover artists, some with just one crossover hit, and then those who crossed over permanently. Rock to country, rock to standards, country to rock...it surprised me! I'm still trying to process Steven Tyler, truthfully.

  2. Mary,

You came up with a wonderful playlist of crossover artists. I stumbled upon Steve Tyler's country album in recent months. I even used one of his songs today. I didn't know Darius Rucker was a rock artist before his country career. The Valentines' "Nick Nack Patty Wack" song is one I haven't heard in years and absolutely forgot about until now. lol That was such a fun song and I didn't know AC/DC lead singer came from that group before now. :) Oh the things I'm gonna learn today! Thanks for sharing your picks and for hitting the dance floor with the 4M gang. Have a funtastic week and keep playin' those tunes!

  3. Hi Mary; I think it's great that artists explore different genres of music. Keeps life interesting! Steven Tyler's country album is excellent. I remember reading about Bon Scott's pop group right here on one of your earlier posts. What a surprise that was! ☺

    1. Hi Debbie!

That Bon Scott find has been the gift that keeps on giving. This was a bit of challenge because I don't like to pigeon hole musicians into specific genrea, so I don't think of them in those terms much. I had to really open my eyes to come up with my list for today.

    1. I was really surprised when I started thinking about it. It seems there was a phase when quite a few rock musicians decided to try their hand at country.

  7. The year is flying by, isn't it. I didn't see that coming by Linkin Park. It works though. Didn't know that bout Bon Scott either.

    1. No worries on being late. We've all been there at some point. That's the beauty of the internet and these posts, they don't disappear in a day :)

I love doing the themes as I learn so much as well whenever I do the research. The burden of too much time on my hands, I suppose.

      See you next week!

  9. What an awesome list Mary! I remember about Bon Scott being with the Valentines prior to AC/DC but didn’t even think about it for this theme. I get such a kick seeing him sing “Knick Knack Patty Whack” — haha.

My absolute favorite here is the Ed Sheeran/Andrea Bocelli pairing. WOW! Simply gorgeous! I especially liked watching Ed Sheeran’s obvious admiration for Bocelli. What a great team they made. I wonder if they’d pair up again? They seemed very comfortable together and their mutual respect and enjoyment of each other’s company was so apparent in the video. I’d love to hear them team up again.

I liked Linkin Park’s take on Adele’s song but I don’t think anyone could ever do it better than Adele. That song belongs to her!

    Excellent playlist Mary.
    Have a great week,

    1. Hey Thanks, Michele!

This was a fun challenge. Thinking of possibly continuing it on this coming week (If I come up with enough content) We'll have to see how it all shakes out.

      See you again next week!

  10. Awesome song choices, Mary! I remember when Darius Rucker started doing country - I kept thinking "I know that guy from somewhere, his voice sounds familiar!" then when I looked it up and saw he was from one of my favorite bands, I was amazed! :) Thanks for the dance! :)
