Music in Sign Language

This week’s theme for #MusicMovesMe has been selected by our guest conductor, Michele from Musings & Merriments.

This week’s assignment was to select 2 songs in sign language, and then 2 of the same without.  You know me, I’m a bit of a rule breaker.  Today, I’m presenting to you 4 songs in sign language.

At first I thought about doing all Ed Sheeran songs, as when I first went in search of ASL songs, it seemed that was the majority of what I could find.

But then, I also thought about the others participating in the blog hop, and decided to dig a little deeper.   Don’t worry… I’m keeping this post short and sweet, so that you’ll have time to visit the other 4M participants.

Here are today’s 4 songs in sign language:

  • Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
  • The Chainsmokers - Closer
  • Adele - Hello
  • Rachel Platten - Fight Song

I hope that you enjoyed today’s selection. Don’t forget to visit the other bloggers in this musical bloghop!  Be sure to come back on Wednesday August 1 for Round Two of The Ultimate Dog v Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament.

  1. Mary,

Excellent choices! One of my songs I selected I suspect someone else will use it today. In fact, someone did. lol Oh well...this is a definitely an interesting theme that was a bit challenging but I love watching someone sign. I enjoyed the two signers from your first and last video chooses best. They were more expressive. Thanks for boogieing with us on the dance floor today, my friend!

    1. Hi Driller!

I don't think I've ever thought about the into to Bohemian Rhapsody with a connection to the Beatles. That's an interesting concept. Thanks for dropping by!

    1. You're doing better than I am. Mondays are usually crazy for me. Non-stop hustlin'. Finally went to bed at 1am, and still didn't make the rounds. Hopefully I'll have a moment today.

  7. Hey Miss Mary,
Great set of signing songs. I guess I didn't quite read the directions. I didn't know we were supposed to do pairs of songs, one in sign language and one not. Hmm, well that would be a bit redundant. Had I known there were rules I would've broke them too. But hey, you and me, we're alike in that regard. Rules? What are those?? :)

You picked some great songs. I only knew the first and last one. I love the Bohemian Rhapsody in sign. And Fight Song is just a good song period.
I found the Chainsmokers "Closer" very interesting. I also like that interpreter's including the literal translations of the signs in both that song and Adele's. That was really interesting too.

This was a neat theme. Sign language has always fascinated me and this took it to a whole new level...

Hope you had a good weekend. Here we are half-way through the week already and I'm still stuck on Monday! :)
    Heading to your battle now.
    See you in a minute...

    1. That's right! Rules are made to be broken! We are a pair of rebels sometimes :)

This was certainly a challenging theme, but glad that we could do our best with it.

And Monday Schmonday... we all know everything's better on Thursday or Friday!

    2. Lol. Yep! Mondays have always been weird for me. When I was working for other people, I always dreaded Mondays. Even though I liked my jobs for the most part, on Sundays when the late afternoon would roll around I'd start getting a pit in my stomach this very uncomfortable feeling that came with the realization that I would soon have to be heading back to the office for another week. I hated Mondays so much that when I became self-employed with my ad agency, I simply didn't work on Mondays. I never set meetings on Mondays, and I didn't do work on Mondays unless I was on a heavy deadline and needed to. And that Sunday pit went away, just like that! Imagine that... :)

    3. Boy, do I sure know that feeling! And you are right - as soon as you start working for yourself, doing what you enjoy - that feeling goes away. Although, here it is Saturday evening, and I still havent decided on what to do for my Monday post. (SMH) But, I did manage to join up with a new Sunday Link-up that sounds like fun. Just wrote up that post - now to fret over Monday. Do I want to do something that ties in with next week's theme, or do I want to do something entirely different. We all know I haven't worked on that series I've been going on about... Damn this heat. Maybe by winter I'll have cooled off enough to give it some time and thought. LOL

  8. I enjoyed your set, because of the two songs where the literal translations were shown. I had a feeling a lot of the words were missing in the ASL versions (although I don't know any ASL) because I know it isn't a literal translation of English. And, Bohemian Rhapsody's beginning is so "visual", anyway - I loved that young man's facial expressions.

    1. Thanks, Alana

I don't know ASL either, but I think the others were using phrasing instead of literal translation. I could be wrong, though.

  9. My daughter would really appreciate this list of music videos. She was born with severe to profound hearing impairment. At 4 she got a cochlear implant and learned to hear with it. She loves music now too.
