5 Favorite Patriotic Rock Songs

For those of us participating in the #MusicMovesMe bloghop, we have a new musical conductor for the month of July.

That's right. Michele from Musings & Merriments gets the privilege of choosing our themes for the month (with the exception of the alternate weeks, which are always 'Your Choice' weeks) Welcome aboard the Goodship RocknRoll, Michele! You've selected some very interesting and challenging choices for this month.

This week is the 4th of July, a day that the United States celebrates it’s independence from England, and I thought I would do something a little bit different today to celebrate it here.

Today, I'm sharing with you my top 5 Favorite Patriotic Rock Songs.

These songs are not listed in any particular order. With this being a holiday weekend in the USA, I am keeping the post short so you can enjoy your time with your friends and families celebrating. And if you aren’t from the USA, I hope that you enjoy the music for what it is, and perhaps in the comments you can tell me your favorite patriotic rock song from your country.

America - Simon & Garfunkel

American Woman - Guess Who

R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A. - John Cougar Mellencamp

Rockin' In the Free World - Neil Young

Star Spangled Banner - Jimi Hendrix

Do you have a Favorite Patriotic Rock Song?

Obviously, I've only barely tapped the well of patriotic rock and roll songs. Which odes to the land of purple mountain majesties did I leave out, and which are your favorites?

Don’t forget to visit the other bloggers in this musical bloghop! Also, if you haven't taken the time to cast your vote in the July 1 Battle of the Bands, please take a quick moment to do so. Voting for the battle will remain open until Sunday July 8. Just click THIS LINK and a fresh page will open up. You won't even lose your place here :)

  2. Hi Mary; We're celebrating Canada's 151st birthday this long weekend, so, it's cool that you have included Canadian artists, The Guess Who and Neil Young. Don't a lot of people consider "American Woman" to be more of a diss? Well, since Lenny Kravitz did a cover of it, it's probably okay now. ☺ Happy 4th of July to you!

    1. Hey Debbie!

I'm glad to have included a few of those Canadian rockers! I must have somehow forgotten about the 151 years celebration. We don't hear much about it here in Southeastern Idaho. But still glad that I could include them none the less. I've always enjoyed "American Woman" diss or not. Lenny did a good job, but the Guess Who are amazing!

      Have a great celebration!

    2. No question. On Canada's last birthday, we watched the great Burton Cummings and his band perform this live. What a blast! ☺

  3. Mary,

Celebrating America's independence on the dance floor couldn't be done any finer than with your song selections! The Guess Who "American Woman" is my favorite of your picks. In fact, it might have been one of their first songs I remember vividly being introduced to. I hope you have an excellent Independence Day celebration and thanks for hitting the dance floor with the 4M gang!

    1. Hi Cathy!

Thanks for stopping by to give my setlist a listen. If I'm being honest, it's a revamped post from a few years ago - but in fairness - I've been hearing quite a bit of these very same tunes on the radio this week, and I really do enjoy them.

      Have a great week!

  4. Great songs. I always say that America the Beautiful sung by Ray Charles is the best. Have a good and safe Fourth of July.

Ray Charles does indeed do a stand up performance of that song. Thank you for coming by the blog today. Have a great holiday!

  5. Hey Mary, remember my friend Ben at Sun Valley? He was on a Greyhound bus and was sitting by a girl whom he struck up a long conversation with. Her name? Kathy! He later told her, "Kathy, I'm lost", but she didn't get the reference.

Maybe you should do a blog honoring Canada. Maybe feature songs with Canadian references, or songs by Canadian artists!

    1. Hey Arn!

It's good to see you here again! That Paul Simon sure did have a way with his words, didn't he?

When I first started blogging here, I did a series of posts from various sections of the world. Perhaps it's time for a 'Blame Canada - Part Two' I like the theme suggestion. I may just do that. Keep your eyes peeled..

Speaking of Sun Valley and old posts... here's one I wrote in December

And speaking of battles, be sure to check out my McCartney v McCartney battle currently taking place.

  7. Those are great choices! I forgot all about the Mellencamp song. Funny that both the Guess Who and Neil Young are Canadian but they wrote such cool American songs.
See you in the Lady Gadget/Kim Six FB group!

    1. Hi Cathy!

Yeah. It's interesting about some of the origins of various artists and their music.

I like Kim Six - she's quite knowledgeable. I recently joined that group, but have been in the other Blogger one for years (so long, that I sometimes forget that I'm in that group!)

  8. Hi Mary,
Happy 4th! Hope you're having a great celebration. I'm about to give the dogs some treats and hope they settle before the noise starts in an hour... I'm going to crank the TV up real loud so they don't hear the booms as much...although they'll feel them for sure. The show is super close to my house. Our homeowners assn decided for the first time ever to hire professionals to put on a show. Fireworks have always been prohibited here in this subdivision so it's not usually horrible. The dogs all over the 'hood will be going nuts! Poor things. And they had to deal with a big thunderstorm today too...

Anyway, GREAT set of patriotic songs. Hard to pick my favorite. I love Rockin' in the Free World, love Simon & Garfunkel's America and love Mellencamp's R.O.C.K. in the USA. And with the Guess Who being my favorite band of all time, I love American Woman. The only one I'm not crazy about is Hendrix' Star Spangled Banner. I've never been a fan of this song. The guitar action in this song drives me nuts...

    Happy Independence Day!
    Talk soon,

    1. Hey Michele!

Can't go wrong with 4 out of 5. I'd say those are pretty good odds :) I still haven't made my rounds to everyone here. I feel as though I am missing a full day, and for some reason, my laundry doesn't want to do itself (even though I've shown it many times how it's done) and I still need to put together my posts for next week.

I'm gonna drop you a reminder message on Facebook.. I don't recall if you stopped by the battle yet (and hey! did you post your results from last battle?)

Hope all goes well with you and the doggies tonight. Stay safe!

    2. Lol on your laundry being just another lazy f*** off... :)

And yes I did vote in your battle. I did it yesterday or today, I can't remember but I did.
And nope, I did not yet post the results. Wanna know why? I was going to do it for the July 1st post so it would coincide with all of you who do battles on the 1st but I didn't realize the 1st had come until the 3rd. And then I was like "Well, shit! That didn't go as planned." So I'm just going to post the results with my battle on the 15th...
And we should regroup on that. Let's connect this week...

    3. Hey!

I did get your vote in the battle. Also managed to get my comments sorted out here. Seems google has made some changes and said anything to anyone. I still haven't written my posts for next week, and I feel as though my brain has gone on vacation without me (The NERVE of it all!) Hopefully, I'll make my rounds today (I know I say that every day... but man, I have been really scattered lately!) Is this what getting older does to a person?

      Chat later.

  10. I could listen to "America" endlessly, being the Simon and Garfunkel fan that I am. It's giving me chills right now, listening to the harmonies! Rockin' in the Free World is a close second. Great set, and thanks again for the set!

Good to see you here again :) Also good to know I'm not the only slowpoke to make all the visits. Crossing my fingers that I'll get them done tonite while it's cooler. Dealing with triple digit heat, living in an upstairs apartment - is not fun.

  12. A good set here! I forgot "R-O-C-K in the USA," because it's been so long since I heard it. And, like I'm telling everyone else, go hear Neal Schon's "Star Spangled Banner," because I think it rivals Hendrix's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11L9lRGu4Nc

    1. Hi John!

Neal Schon does a remarkable performance. I almost went with Metallica's version, but it had been so long since I heard Hendrix that I wanted to include him. This would be a good battle sometime. Neal Schon v Metallica.
