The Ultimate Dog v Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament, Round Three

My good friend Michele from Angels Bark and I are collaborating on a small battle tournament. We’ve had our Round One and Two battles, and now we are ready for Round Three.

But first - I’m sure you’re all dying to know the results of Round Two, right?

Round Two proved to be a pretty decent battle. Everyone that voted was very sure of their vote. No wishy-washiness here!  I think it’s fairly safe to say that everyone voted on nostalgia - and depending upon which era you are from was your deciding vote.  Now I recall the original from 1974, but I’ve always been a bit drawn to the 1992 cover. So my vote goes to Ugly Kid Joe.

The final tally looks like this:

Ugly Kid Joe with 8 votes
Harry Chapin with 11 votes

Now, this leads us to today’s battle - Harry Chapin vs Pantera

The winner of this round will square off against the winner of Michele’s Round Three battle taking place today at Angels Bark. That battle will take place on September 1st.

As I told Michele earlier… look out little doggies we’re coming for you! Your vote today will decide who will go up against those doggies!

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos (unless specifically requested - in the case of today’s battle, listening is more important than watching)

Step Two - Pick the contender that you prefer the most

Step Three - Comment with your selection. (Yes, I know my blog can be pretty sometimes. Yes, I know you may not be familiar with the song(s) or artist(s). Don’t tell me about that. Instead, give me your opinion on which is the better contender.)

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Alright - I’ll make this next part quick because I know you’ll want to get on to the other battles taking place today.

Contender #1 - Harry Chapin - Cats In The Cradle
The single topped the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1974. As Chapin's only No. 1 hit song, it became the best known of his work and a staple for folk rock music. Chapin's recording of the song was nominated for the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011.  Typically, I don’t like to use the original artist in these battles, but I think the other contender is strong enough to hold their own for a decent battle.  In other words, I’m crossing my fingers and praying this doesn’t become a blowout or a shutout.

Contender #2 - Cat Scratch Fever - Pantera
Pantera was an American heavy metal band from Arlington, Texas. The group was formed in 1981 by the Abbott brothers – drummer Vinnie Paul and guitarist Dimebag Darrell – along with lead vocalist Terry Glaze. Bassist Rex Brown joined the band the following year, replacing Tommy D. Bradford, who was the unofficial original. Having started as a glam metal band, Pantera released four albums during the 1980s. Looking for a new and heavier sound, Pantera replaced Glaze with Phil Anselmo in late 1986 and released Power Metal in 1988. With its fifth album, 1990's Cowboys from Hell, Pantera introduced a groove metal sound. Pantera's sixth album, 1992's Vulgar Display of Power, exhibited an even heavier sound. Far Beyond Driven (1994) debuted at number one on the Billboard 200.
Tensions began to surface among the band members when Anselmo became addicted to heroin in 1995; he almost died from an overdose in 1996. These tensions resulted in the recording sessions for The Great Southern Trendkill (1996) being held separately. The ongoing tension lasted for another seven years, during which only one studio album, Reinventing the Steel (2000), was recorded. Pantera went on hiatus in 2001 but was disbanded by the Abbott brothers in 2003 amid communication problems and their conclusion that Anselmo would not return to the band.
The Abbott brothers went on to form Damageplan, while Anselmo continued work on several side projects, including Down, which Rex Brown joined as well. On December 8, 2004, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage by a mentally unstable fan during a Damageplan concert in Columbus, Ohio. Vinnie Paul died in 2018, permanently ending hopes for a reunion, and leaving Glaze as the only surviving member of the band's first line-up.

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in the fun - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands as well, but especially would like to encourage you to visit Michele’s battle in this tournament. . We’ve put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

REMEMBER - YOU ARE ONLY VOTING FOR PANTERA OR HARRY CHAPIN TODAY

  1. Glad to see my choice, Harry Chapin, won the last battle. I'm sticking with him for this one, as well. Love that song! This was a fun series, Mary. ☺

We have certainly enjoyed ourselves with this tournament. It's quite possible we may do this type of tournament again another time.

    2. it's such a great idea and sure to be popular if you do it again. ☺ I just noticed something. That's not Harry Chapin's picture on the video. It looks like Cat Stevens! Hmm...

    3. Yeah. whoever put the video together used the wrong picture. The audio is definitely Harry Chapin.

  2. This is a real contrast of styles. Each performance is excellent, but as far as my personal taste I'm going with Chapin again. Guess I'm just kind of a sentimental guy.

No worries about being sentimental :) It really is a big contrast in style. I'm anxious to see who will take on Michele's Doggies.

  3. Hey my Tourney partner!
This is so fun we absolutely must do something ilke it again.
    Re: your Semi-Final battle:
I LOVE Cat's in the Cradle and was thrilled that Harry Chapin won that last round. I included the song in my 4M post with your extremely cool theme of Songs with Animals in the Title. Did you happen to catch the video that I used for the song? It starts off with comments from Harry's wife and son and it just gave me all kinds of warm fuzzies about Harry and the song.
Okay, so it's established: I really like this song.

However, in this particular battle, I'm going to go with Pantera's version of Cat Scratch Fever. Why? Because when listening to both of them side by side, I asked myself which one I'd want to hear if I were stranded on a deserted island and only had one song available. I prefer Cat Scratch Fever over Cat's in the Cradle.
Both songs bring back memories and you know how I'm all about nostalgia. But I think an overdose of Cat's in the Cradle would start to make me sad. It's very powerful emotionally.
Cat Scratch Fever really brings back some exceptionally fun memories for me. And Pantera's version is close enough to Nugent's that I could listen to that one all day every day and still stay sane.
So my vote goes to Pantera and Cat Scratch Fever (which btw I had as a child...)

Speaking of cats: LOVE the nail-file kitty meme! hahaha. She's sharpenin' her claws for the ultimate showdown I see. Okay, okay, we'll be ready...
Let's start talkin' some smack now! :)

    Let's rock this Semi-Final Mary!
Have a good night. I had wanted to be in bed by 11pm tonight but I just noticed the clock and it's 2am so well, that didn't happen. Surprise! :)

    1. Hey! did you ever get to bed? I crashed somewhere around 3am. Am really glad to see Cat Scratch Fever get a vote. You just saved this from being a shutout! LOL okay, only just 3 votes in, but it's good to see both sides get votes :)

I like the idea of doing this again, as this has truly been a lot of fun. I still think that ultimately the dogs are gonna win, but I don't mind taunting those puppies with cat memes in the meantime :) It's all in good fun.

      We will definitely chat later

  4. Mary,

Whew, what a contrast in songs/artists is putting it mildly! :) I've always like Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle". Pantera really rocked with "Cat Scratch Fever". Contender #2 isn't my normal cup of tea and while I don't think this the only song to be stuck with on dessert island I do like it well enough to give Pantera my vote today. :) Whenever you get a second, please stop by to vote in my latest BoTB!

    1. Hi Cathy!

I'm happy to make my rounds to the other BOTBers today, As BOTB historian (self-appointed) I always visit all that I am aware of so I can vote and make a note of songs and artists being used. I also make a note of the results of those battles because I think it's good to look back to see how those battles panned out.

I figured you for a Chapin vote, but am happy to see you vote for Pantera. You've brought this battle currently to a tie. Now, I know it's still early on in the voting process, but now I'm really excited to see the outcome of this round to see who is going to take on those dogs.

Hope your upcoming surgery goes well!

I was really surprised to see how close your last Battle turned out to be. I sure missed my guess on that one, and it shows to go ya what I knows.

I'm certain I don't have to tell you how I'm voting on THIS Battle. Just go ahead and put me down for it. I didn't even need to listen to the songs in order to figure out who I'm siding with.

I appreciate that you became the BOTB Historian. That spreadsheet has come in very handy for me a number of times and I'm pleased as spiked punch that there is a record of all the Battles since the beginning. (Lucky for us that you came along and joined up!)

Also, I want to add that I hope you and Michele really do something like this again. I think this tournament idea is terrific. I'm truly diggin' it.

What's ironic is that I generally like dogs much more than I do cats, and therefore I'm actually hoping the dogs win this thing. And yet, looking at the songs remaining in the contest, I may wind up voting for the Cat in the Final Battle.

    1. Hey there Stephen!

I held out on posting results because I wanted the natural curiosity of peeps to make them come check out this post (my only slightly evil plan) I was pretty surprised by the results as well.

Okay, I've got your vote recorded for Led Zeppelin. Wait. That's not right. Marvin Gaye? oh yeah.. anyone BUT Pantera! Okay. Chapin it is!

It's funny you say that you think a Cat will win the Championship Round. Personally, I see a Dog taking that fight.

Michele and I should definitely do more tournaments, and I would like to include more BOTBers. Wouldn't that be a load of fun? The only thing is we still havee to work out the full logistics of who is hosting the Final Round and if we both post the same battle for Final Round, should we a) combine totals or b) eliminate duplicate votes? You can say we didn't think it through completely, mostly just flying by the seat of our pants.

I love doing keep track of the battles. It truly does come in handy. I refer to it all the time as well - checking to see if a specific song or artist has been used or what the outcome of was. It has only helped to improve the quality? of my battles.

      Truly appreciate the support.

      ~Mary

  7. That's funny how you and Michele did not completely think through how you'd handle the Championship round. Ha!-Ha!

No, I don't think a cat is going to win. I'm pretty sure a dog will win. But, although I'm rooting for the dogs over the cats, because I prefer canines to felines, I may find myself voting for a cat in the Championship. (Who I ROOT for and who I VOTE for may not be the same thing.)

If you can work out the logistics of it, I would certainly be interested in participating in a tournament involving more BOTBers.

" and "For those of you who may be interested - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th"... with more on participating in the battle, etc....but nothing about where the idea originated, at least in this post.

To answer your required question... Harry Chapin - Cats In The Cradle would be my vote. Based on listening to the song itself and not watching the video (as instructed :) )
