Have a Drink on Me! #4M

Monday means it’s time for #MondaysMusicMovesMe or #4M.  I don’t know about you, but I’ve had one heck of a week!  All sorts of technology issues ranging from my phone that dies the moment I unplug from the charger to the fan on my computer that wants to just give up and quit. All of these issues are driving me to drink!

Good thing, I’m the Official Guest Conductor this month, as I get to choose the theme for the week.  This week’s theme, although chosen a few months ago, is right on schedule for today!

Our theme for this week is Songs with Beverages in the title.

Before I get started though, last week I asked what song did you think inspired the ‘Rockin’ Monkeys’ playlist. I had quite a few guesses, but no one was able to guess correctly.  The song that was my inspiration was “Monkey Wrench” by Foo Fighters.

I also a little surprised that no one wanted to venture any guesses as to who the mystery artist is that gave an impromptu concert at my nephew’s home recently. I’m just going to keep that one under my hat for a minute, until I find the right time to write about them.

We’re starting off this list with a song that doesn’t have a beverage in the title, but it is appropriate for today.  Roger Miller was a favorite artist when I was just a wee one.

Speaking of being a wee one - the second song in the playlist is a song that I grew up with. It’s a traditional Scottish drinking song.   Here are the lyrics:

Wee Deoch an Doris
There's a good old Scottish custom that has stood the test o'time,
It's a custom that's been carried out in every land and clime.
When brother Scots are gathered, it's aye the usual thing,
Just before we say good night, we fill our cups and sing…

Chorus
Just a wee deoch an doris, just a wee drop, that's all.
Just a wee deoch an doris afore ye gang awa.
There's a wee wifie waitin' in a wee but an ben.
If you can say, "It's a braw bricht moonlicht nicht",
Then yer a'richt, ye ken.

Now I like a man that is a man; a man that's straight and fair.
The kind of man that will and can, in all things do his share.
Och, I like a man a jolly man, the kind of man, you know,
The chap that slaps your back and says, "Jock, just before ye go..."

Chorus

Meaning of unusual words:
deoch an doris=Gaelic for a drink at the door, a last (?) farewell drink
aye=always
but and ben=a two-roomed cottage
ken=know

The rest of the playlist:
  • One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer - George Thorogood
  • Tequila Sunrise - Eagles
  • Red Red Wine - UB40
  • Mas Tequila - Sammy Hagar & The Wabos
  • Spill The Wine - War
  • Beer! - Psychostick
  • One Mint Julep - Louis Prima
  • Sailor - Glass of Champagne
  • I like Beer - Tom T Hall
  • Gin & Juice - Snoop Dogg

And to end the list:
  • Drunken Lullabies - Flogging Molly

Have a great day! And Enjoy!

  1. Mary,

I remember the 1964 top 10 chart song 'Chug-a-Lug' from my childhood more toward the end of the decade. I was only 3 at the time of it's release. "Tequila Sunrise", "Red Red Wine", & "One Mint Julep" are the only others on your beverage playlist that I knew. Of course, there's something remotely familiar about Sammy Hagar's song but I can't swear to hearing it before today, though. This was such a fun theme, girl. I'm so glad you tossed this one out for us to boogie to. :) Have a groovy day, my friend!

    1. Thanks, Cathy!

Believe it or not, I was planning on going with a more tame list than this one. But when it came right down to it, I knew I had to toss in these fun songs.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Well, I am truly embarrassed that I forgot about Roger Miller, but there were still plenty of beverage choices in the country archives. Have a blessed week.

    1. No need to be embarrassed! The song itself doesn't mention a beverage in the title, but I tossed it into the mix because it seemed appropriate.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  3. So cool and a hard theme (at least for me) to do. None of my songs are your list-lol. I mostly have coffee but I did choose "Orange Crush" (it is a soda) by R.E.M.

    Thanks for this.

    1. Hi Patrick!

I was originally going to go with coffee and soda drinks, but changed my mind at the last minute. Maybe next week for the freebie week I'll do the coffee and sodas...

  4. This is a theme that has a lot of possibilities. Surprisingly you had a few to offer that I've not yet seen on other sites.

    1. Hi Lee!

I tried to keep the playlist small as I didn't want to overwhelm everyone. I could probably come up with a few more set lists of different varieties of beverages. There's plenty of time for that in the Freebie weeks :)

  6. Fun topic and playlist, Mary. ☺ Looking at your Scottish drinking song lyrics and then listening to it, it's apparent that Gaelic has several similarities to German; especially that gutteral sounds and rolling Rs. Snoop Dogg is always fun. Cheers!

The Scottish Drinking song is a lot of fun and it brings back a lot of memories for me as we used to sing it at family reunions all the time. I may need to do a sober up post next. LOL

  8. Awesome list! I was not expecting a Scottish drinking song from you! I can't wait to find out who performed at your nephew's. Would I have heard of them? I will venture a guess if I can read the post that might point me in the direction of a few clues. My musical knowledge isn't what it used to be, but what the hell - I'll give it my best anyway!

    1. Oh, I'm full of all sorts of surprises :)

RE: my nephew's private concert - you probably wouldn't recognize the name (I didn't) but after doing my homework, I'm impressed. The guy wrote and co-wrote for some pretty big names. I was going to do an alternate beverage list next week, but I'm thinking I may just go ahead and write about this mystery artist - I've teased it long enough. Ha!

  10. I got ROGER MILLER from my Pa. Grew up listening to all his hits. Pa used to wake us up for school by suddenly blaring 'You Can't Roller Skate In A Buffalo Herd'. (And some folks wonder why I'm a little on the loony side.)

I like to say that the two biggest influences on my writing were Bob Dylan's album 'Bringing It All Back Home' and Roger Miller's album 'Golden Hits'.

I was telling John earlier that I grew up listening to Spike Jones, Homer & Jethro, and Roger Miller. These guys were on heavy rotation at our house. 'You Can't Roller Skate In a Buffalo Herd' and 'Dang Me' were high on my list of favorites.

  11. Mary, I didn't know you spent your formative years listening to Roger Miller! I did too! My folks played him all the time when I was a wee lad. Mom says I learned to put Roger Miller records on the record player and play them when I was only 3. I've passed that on to my kids. We have an RV that has a cassette player, and on our trips, the kids always ask for "the road songs", led off by, of course, "King of the Road". A couple of summers ago we went to the East Coast, and must have heard Golden Hits 100 times. Great times thanks to a brilliant, wickedly funny and sly singer and songwriter

    1. Hey Arn!

I was pretty sure you and I have had this discussion before - but you would know better than I do about that old age and memory thing ;) (not implying you are OLD, just older than me! *whew* good save!)

It sounds as though you've educated your younguns right about music. I've heard about your epic roadtrips with Burnham, so I'm sure your offspring have been enlightened with some pretty fantastic trips as well.

I haven't had a chance to peek at your Facebook page in a few days - did Penni manage to make it out of Hawaii alright?

Glad I could help bring back some memories for you and the youngsters.

  12. Roger Miller - what memories he brings back."King of the Road" is one of my husband's favorites. I am kicking myself for not including "Mas Tequila". But the height of this post was the Scottish Drinking Song, first, for a recording from 1912, and second for listening to him sing the Gaelic lyrics. And the fact that the song is a childhood memory of yours. So enjoyable. Thank you for the theme!

  13. You have a fun list here Mary! I can see why Roger Miller was a favorite of yours. He does have a good voice. I like that chug-a-lug song. I don't remember it though... It's a good song!

The Psychosticks video was crazy! Reminded me of some drunken frat boys screaming about beer. Remember those days? I never was into frat boys. They were idiots. At least at YSU they were. :)

And that Sailor group: they were fun to watch! Never heard of them but I got a real kick out of the video, especially the piano guy (I laughed out loud at the :47 or :48 mark!) haha

And Drunken Lullabies: that sure was some good fiddle-playin' goin' on there! Never heard of Floggin' Molly. That's some name!

I used Ray Charles version of One Mint Julep. I really like the one you used by Louis Prima. That's probably my favorite song on your whole playlist.

This was such a fun theme Mary. You have been an excellent Conductor! Thanks for the great good times. Both posts I did were some of my personal favorites and that just goes to show you what fun I had putting them together. I'm up in October...That's going to come sooner than we expect it to...

Have a good rest of the week,

    1. Haha! I was never into frat-boys (or beer, for that matter). But I have always thought the song hilarious. It always warms my heart when you notice the little intricacies of my posts. They're like little hidden easter eggs that you always seem to find :)

I'm surprised you hadn't heard of Floggin' Molly. They've been around since the 90's. And while they are an Irish-American Punk Band (aka Celtic Punk) I still confuse their name with Molly Hatchet (Southern Hard Rock).

October will be here much sooner than you know. Better start getting prepared for Christmas and 2019 A to Z. I've got my theme picked out - just need to get the posts written and scheduled - and knowing me, that will happen most likely March 30. LOL

Hard to believe it'll be September next week.
