Rockin' Monkeys #4M

Time again for the #4M folks to come together and have some fun! As the Official Guest Conductor this month, I was the one selected to choose the theme.  Today’s theme is “Free Choice” meaning you can post about anything you want musically related.

I had a few thoughts about what to post today. One thought was to revisit the “Dog Days of Summer”  and share some dog songs with you - but then I wondered it that might be a bit hypocritical as I’m supporting Cats in the Ultimate Dog v Cat Battle of the Bands Tournament.

Another thought would be to share music from a new-to-me band. My nephew was telling me about a band that stayed in his little hotel a week or so ago, and they were treated to a private concert in their home. The lead singer has quite the resume -writing and co-writing songs with some pretty big names in the music industry.

But in the end, I landed on a thought of a song that kept popping in my head last week - and I’ve built my playlist around this song.  I’ll share the playlist with you, and you can guess in the comments which song was the one that I had on my mind :)

  • "Shock the Monkey" is a song by English rock musician Peter Gabriel. It was released in September 1982 as the second single from his fourth self-titled album, issued in the US under the title Security. The song peaked at number 29 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The song was Gabriel's first Top 40 hit in the US. In the UK, the song charted at number 58.
  • "Monkey Man" is a song by English rock band the Rolling Stones, featured as the eighth track on their 1969 album Let It Bleed.
  • "Brass Monkey" is a song by the New York rap group Beastie Boys. It was a single released from their first album Licensed to Ill. It is also on the Beastie Boys' compilation album Solid Gold Hits.
  • "Monkey Wrench" is the lead single from the second Foo Fighters album, The Colour and the Shape. The lyrics chronicle the 1997 disintegration of singer/songwriter Dave Grohl's four-year marriage to Jennifer Youngblood.
  • “Monkey In Your Soul” - from Steely Dan’s album Pretzel Logic
  • “Psycho Monkey” This song is by Joe Satriani and appears on the album Crystal Planet
  • "Monkey on My Back" is a song by American hard rock band Aerosmith. Written by lead singer Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry, the song was released on the band's 1989 album Pump. It was released as a promotional single to rock radio in 1990, where it reached No. 17 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
  • "Tweeter and the Monkey Man" is a song by the British–American supergroup the Traveling Wilburys that first appeared on the 1988 album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Traveling Wilburys consisted of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty.
  • “Monkey with Your Tail” by The Cramps from the Big Beat from Badsville album
  • “Green Monkey”  This song is by America and appears on the album Hat Trick and on the compilation album Highway: 30 Years of America.

Can you guess which song is the one that inspired this post?  Lemme see your guesses in the comments!

Oh… and before I forget… If you haven’t already voted in The Semi-Final Round of the Battle of the Bands Tournament, now would be a good time to do so.  The winner of this Round will determine which songs will be battling the Dogs.

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked and Curious as a Cathy.  Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.  If you have a MUSIC* post, feel free to join in the fun! *sorry non-music posts are not permitted in this bloghop.

    1. Thanks Patrick!

I was a bit surprised at the number myself - and I left quite a few behind :)

  2. I'll go with "Shock The Monkey" as the song that prompted the list, simply because it's first, and that's what I usually do. A good list that I'll be sure and listen to later...

  3. I'm going to guess "Monkey with Your Tail" because until last week, I had never even heard of the Cramps and now, with second song I've heard from them, it's love at first and second listen! And even if it wasn't your inspiration, you came up with some fine songs, including several I've never heard before - such as the song by America. I love Shock the Monkey and Monkey on my Back; was great hearing them. Have a good week!

Excellent guess, but nope. I do like the song and it really is catchy! I'm having far too much fun with this theme.

    1. Hi Marie

Hope your surgery goes well and you get some much needed relief soon. If you're like me and have trouble sleeping in places like hospitals, take your phone or ipod and let the music flow through your ears at night. I found it also helps with breathing and relaxation at times like that.

  5. Mary,

Whew, what a week! I finally made a show on the dance floor. I read through your song titles on this week's featured playlist. Honestly of them ring any bells here. Let me take that back, I think some of these might have been used last week or I just recall seeing them when I did my own research. I'm listening to your set right. Either my brain is still in a fog (probably) or none of these tracks sounded familiar to me and for that I say, thanks for the introduction.

I have no clue which song inspired your playlist but I sure do like your theme. Another 4Mer kept with animal song titles for her theme this week, too. You did fab coming up with this one! Have a blessed and boogietastic week, dearie!

    1. Thanks, Cathy!

Any word on how Marie is doing today? I still have to sit down and put together my post for Monday, that's going to be another fun one If I do say so myself :) Lots of beverages to work with! Maybe I'll have a drink or two for deeper inspiration. ha!

And, you're not too late, it's only Wednesday (but definitely feels like a Friday to me!)

    2. Mary,

No, I haven't heard anything about Marie yet. I left a message for her husband on FB. Hopefully, he'll see it and get back with me. She's been in my thoughts & prayers a lot. I know everything is going to be okay but the not knowing is always difficult.

Oh, I tell you the past week has been so full that I've totally lost track of what day it is and yesterday I kept thinking today is Friday. Imagine how disappointing that was to me to find out I was way off base! lol The good news is tomorrow IS Friday. I still have DD#1's baby shower to do on Sunday and then I breathe a little sigh of relief but there's still some big things we need to get down before mid- September that has us a scrambling.

I'm still playing catch up. I hope to have an update on Marie by Monday to share with everyone. Have a blessed day!

  6. Good gravy, I'm finally here! All the sudden I realized "holy crap, it's Thursday already!" And I have to make the rounds for the week still.

This Monkey thing you have goin' on here: WOWSA! It's way cool! I had no idea there were so many songs about monkeys! It was an eye-opening post. Probably the most surprising thing to me was America's "Green Monkey". I saw the name of the band and I thought "huh, I don't know that one." So I listened to it. And I listened. And I'm like "This is America, as in A Horse with No Name/Sister Golden Hair America?? I couldn't make the connection in my head. I didn't recognize them visually. And I thought, "Could there be another band named America??" That song just doesn't sound like an America song! You had me completely stumped. For that reason I'm going to guess that Green Monkey is the song that inspired this post.

That or the Beastie Boys. Now that song I actually kinda dug. You know I'm not into rap and hip hop but this was a cool song. I think mostly the video had me stuck on the screen. That was some funny stuff. I got a kick out of the one in the back seat holding the bigass boom box out the window. Hilarious!

My other two guesses are Tweeter & the Monkey Man or Joe Satriani's Psycho Monkey.

I'm ready for the answer now...

    :)

    1. hahahaha! All these good guesses and no one has guessed correctly yet :) muahahahaha!

It's been one of those weeks for sure! The fan on my computer is dying so I have to keep coaxing it along, limiting my time on the computer. To make things more complicated, my phone only works when it's plugged into the charger -and for some dang reason I only have one short charger that works. My tablet doesn't like to play well with other apps, so I've had to figure out ways to get all my work done. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a new computer. Or even a new phone. This being broke really sucks the big one.

Still haven't written my posts for next week. Hopefully I'll be able to get that done either tomorrow or Saturday.

Hope all is well with ya!

      ~Mary

    2. I know! Shock the Monkey. Is that right? I'm thinking it's Shock the Monkey because you put that first in your playlist, in thinking that nobody will think the answer would be the first song....
      That's my guess...
