Song Lyric Sunday: Drink

A week or so ago, I saw this New to Me Music Blog Hop show up in my email. I think I may have seen it on John @ Sound of One Hand Typing, but I can’t be sure.  Anyway… I thought this seemed like a fun idea, and figured I’d give it a go this week.

The Idea was formed by Helen @ Helens Words Of Life. She has presented us with the theme of DRINK for this week. Be sure to check out her page for all the rules of her game.

The first song that popped into my head takes me on a journey to a few decades ago. The artist is one of my first love’s favorite artists.

It’s Sunday, so I’ll keep this relatively short for you.

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

"I Drink Alone" is a rock song by George Thorogood and the Destroyers. It was released as a single from the 1985 album Maverick. The song describes a man who, as the name of the song suggests, spends most of his time alone drinking. It name-checks various alcoholic beverages (J.P. Wiser's Whisky, Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam, Johnnie Walker (Black and Red Labels), and Old Grand-Dad) in the verses.

I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Now every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser
That's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Yeah, the other night I laid sleeping
And I woke from a terrible dream
So I caught up my pal Jack Daniel's
And his partner Jimmy Beam
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Yeah, the other day I got invited to a party
But I stayed home instead
Just me and my pal Johnny Walker
And his brothers Black and Red
And we drank alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Yeah my whole family done give up on me
And it makes me feel oh so bad
The only one who will hang out with me
Is my dear old granddad
And we drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself
I drink alone

  1. "When I drink alone, I prefer to be by myself..." Robert Frost he ain't, but it's a good song regardless.

    1. He certainly has some good ones. You have to wonder how much alcohol went into those lyrics.

  3. Not to be a nitpicker (or even a cotton-picker), but I'm pretty sure the following lyrics...

Now every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser
    That's all I ever need

...don't have anything to do with J.P. Wiser's Whisky. I think he's referring to drinking BUD(dy)WEISER beer for breakfast.

Of course, just the thought of that makes me gag. The idea that ANYONE would drink Budweiser for breakfast is mind-boggling. A nice craft beer like, say, Great Basin Brewing Company's '39 North Blonde Ale' would probably be a good breakfast beverage, but Budweiser? Nah!

I remember having Miller in the can for breakfast once on Catalina Island circa 1982. Bad choice, as it didn't stay down. (If one is going to drink beer for breakfast, they need to choose wiser than Miller in the can, or even Budweiser.)

    1. Yo McCarthy!

Be a nitpicker, see if I care! I don't like beer for breakfast or any part of the day. Have never been able to like the taste. Now, a good liquor on the other hand...

    2. Beer must often be an acquired taste. I think the majority of people don't care for it initially. I didn't like it at all when I was 14 or 15.

In fact, it wasn't until I became 21 that I gradually came to enjoy it. First by drinking Molson Golden (a Canadian beer) after it had gone flat. For some reason, I liked that beer flat. Then later I started drinking it the way it's supposed to be done.

And I think EVERYONE likes a good licker-- er... liquor. (Sorry.)

    3. I never drank beer in my youth. It was always liquor. Started with Greyhounds. Tried wine, but it just wasn't for me and I still don't care for it.

A-FREAKING-MEN! And that's all I'm gonna say about that!
