#BattleOfTheBands Results : Learning To Fly

Another battle has come and gone…

We spent the past week casting votes here at Jingle Jangle Jungle for what we believe the best cover of Tom Petty’s “Learning To Fly”

Watching the votes come in was like watching a tennis match. The votes kept going back and forth, except for the poor Weepies. I guess no one cared much for their indie contribution to the battle. Now they are left living up to their name, weeping in the corner.

The real battle came down to Bonnie Raitt Tyler v Lady Antebellum.  It was a good, strong battle, but in the end, Bonnie Raitt Tyler took the lead.

The final tally -

Bonnie Raitt Tyler with 8 votes
Lady Antebellum with 5 votes
Weepies with 0 votes

As you might recall, Tom Petty was part of the supergroup Traveling Wilburys. The members of that group gave themselves fake names to go by. Tom went by Charlie T Wilbury, Jr.

Tom passed away on Oct 2, 2017.  His Traveling Wilbury’s bandmate Bob Dylan, aka Lucky Wilbury, had a concert scheduled on what would have been Petty’s 67th birthday, Oct 20, 2017. When it came time for Dylan’s encore, he performed “Learning to Fly” in honor of his friend. This was the only time that Dylan had performed the song during his 2017 tour.

The only footage/audio I could find for this performance was video submitted by concert attendees. They took a huge risk in taking the video as they were told that using cell phones would get them removed from the concert.  As a result, the audio isn’t the greatest, but you can hear the emotion in Dylan’s voice.

What did you think of this battle? Did your vote go to the winner?

Be sure to come back on the 15th for another battle. I mentioned to Stephen that I had something in mind for it, but for the life of me I can’t recall what I had in mind. I guess it will be a surprise for all of us!

  1. I was in the winning crowd. Poor Weepies.

Dylan made it his song. But then I always thought Petty sounded a lot like Dylan.

    1. In listening to Dylan's performance, I had to keep double checking I had the correct video - that's how similar they sound - at least for this song.

  2. Oh no! But keep up with these competetions. I will participate more.

The Weepies may be weeping, but they have even less reason to cry than does poor Bonnie Tyler. Tyler got the largest number of votes and STILL LOST the Battle to Bonnie Raitt, who wasn't even a competitor! Now THAT'S reason to cry! (Ha! ;o)

Very cool story about Dylan doing 'Learning To Fly' in honor of Tom Petty! Petty was definitely a Dylan fan and I always felt that he was probably deliberately trying to sound somewhat like Dylan on many songs.

I'm a fan of BOTH artists and own a good number of their albums on CD. I didn't really appreciate Dylan enough when I was younger - in my teens - but as I got older, started to really study the history of Rock music, and began to understand just how influential Dylan was as a songwriter, I became a huge fan. I needed to be able to look back chronologically to understand the importance of Bob Dylan and how he had utterly revolutionized the art of writing lyrics.

Today, I consider Dylan, Mark Twain, and Roger Miller to be the 3 biggest influences on my own writing.

That's SO FUNNY that you can't remember what you had in mind for your next Battle! You even alluded to it to me like a teaser. What is this? Bait and switch to... nothing?!

Well, it'll come back to ya in time.

    1. Oh Man! I am truly losing it!

Thanks for pointing out my major faux pas. I've fixed it now. I must have an awful lot on my mind to do something like that.

I need to get it together before this next week, as I have more posts to write and that next battle. Hmmm maybe Bonnie Raitt is on my mind subliminally and I need to either include her in a post next week or find a good battle for her. Who knows, maybe Bonnie Tyler will win that one for her :)

    2. Turn about is fair play!

Well, I don't know if this'll give you any ideas and lead to anything worthwhile or not but, when I think of Bonnie Raitt, I always think of what she said about Howlin' Wolf:

      https://tinyurl.com/yb4khr66

Scroll down to the heading 'Bonus Material'. What Raitt referred to as "scary maleness" would probably be called "toxic masculinity" today. At least by the SJWs with their room-temperature IQs.

So... I dunno, but the idea of Bonnie covering a Howlin' Wolf song against someone else covering the same song...? (I don't think I'd actually put Bonnie up AGAINST The Wolf but... what do I know?)

Anyway, just scattering seeds that may take root and blossom at some point.

    3. That's a pretty good idea. I did stumble across a website that has a good selection of covers. I've bookmarked it as I have a feeling it may come in handy a few times. According to the page, Raitt did 104 covers - so I've got a few to choose from. Let's hope I pick a good one!

    4. That's a very good website for BOTBers. I've actually used it a couple of times in the past, when looking for a good cover to use against a recording I'd already decided I wanted to use in a Battle.
