#4M : Dr Hook

Today’s theme for #MondaysMusicMovesMe or #4M has been chosen by “The Shadow”.  They will be the ‘music conductor’ for the month of January.  Every other week is a ‘Free Choice’ week, and this just happens to be the week.

As I thought about what I would post today, one of the questions that kept popping into my head was “What have you been listening to lately”.  To answer that, I’ve been listening to quite a bit of “Paternity Court”.  Don’t judge me, it's better than Maury. Musically, I’ve been listening to quite a bit of Dr Hook.

I’m guessing it’s because I’m still in a state of shock that Ray Sawyer passed away on New Years Eve at the age of 81.  See, just a few months ago my good friend Michele and I were talking about their song ‘Cover of The Rolling Stone’.  In the video we watched, the entire band was flying high. Not a sober one in the group. We were trying to figure out just when that video was made. I’m not sure we were able to figure that one out. But it seems there are quite a few videos of the band where they are definitely not sober.  But do you know what?  These guys are so full of talent, and they were having the time of their lives. They were laughing and goofing off and still making good music.

The band broke up in 1983.  They all remained good friends and Dennis Locorriere and Ray Sawyer both continued on separately using the Dr Hook name.   Many of their songs were written by beloved children’s author Shel Silverstein. These guys made making music look FUN!

Here’s a sample of what I’ve been listening to:

  • Only Sixteen
  • When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman
  • Everybody's Making It Big But Me
  • Sharing The Night Together
  • Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk
  • A Little Bit More
  • Yodel
  • Sylvia’s Mother
  • Freaker’s Ball
  • I Don´t Want To Be Alone Tonight

Do you have a favorite Dr Hook song? Is there a band or a musician that surprises you that they have lived as long as they have?

Don’t forget to stop by tomorrow (Jan 15) for the next Battle of the Bands.

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked, Curious as a Cathy. , and Ramblin with AM. Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.  If you have a MUSIC* post, feel free to join in the fun! *sorry non-music posts are not permitted in this bloghop.

  1. Mary,

Dr. Hook is a 70s artist I often forget about until someone refreshes my ears again. I think of these songs, "Share The Night Together" is my favorite but I do recall "Only Sixteen". I got such a kick out of "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk". That's when girls didn't mind being the center of attention without getting offended. :) "Little Bit More" is another good track and I remember when "Sylvia's Mother" hit. That song always made me so sad. Now, girl you got me wanting to buy a Dr. Hook CD. I'm heading over to iTunes to see if I can get a great hits collection! Thanks for sharing the past with me on the dance floor, my friend. Have a boogietastic week and I'll see ya center row tomorrow for BoTB!

    1. Thanks, Patrick! If you're like me, sometimes just hearing the tune brings back the memory of the song.

  3. I suddenly had a flashback memory of seeing them in concert at the Alumni Gym at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville sometime in the early 1970's. So many great concerts back then and they were always very cheap. Some great times with that music in the background.

  4. When I first heard "Sylvia's Mother," I thought they were a novelty band, and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" didn't do much to dispel that. They actually did quite a lot of very good music. I never heard their version of "Freaker's Ball," but I have heard Shel Silverstien's. Funny how that worked out. Good set!

  5. I had never, ever seen a Dr. Hook video - I'm mainly familiar with "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and "Sylvia's Mother". I think these people were high in almost every one of the videos you picked; it should be (and may have been)illegal to have that much fun. And Shel Silverstein? I didn't know that either. You made my week!

  7. OMG I first of all I'm sorry I haven't been around, but I started therapy & I've been pooped & really not feeling very well. I was up this evening so I thought I'd try to make the rounds. I've heard of Dr. Hook, but never had the pleasure that I can remember. Hubby said they're really good, so he sat & listened with me a bit, but I totally love these guys. Thanks so much for the introduction my friend. They're really getting down... look how much that one guy is sweatin'! Oh my & all my oldie faves... OMG BUT I have to admit "Everybody makin' it, but me" is my favorite! What a hoot! Well.. I may sneak around tomorrow & listen to some more if you don't mind, but for now I'm off to bed. Thanks for your understanding... and as usual my friend..... YOU ROCK! hugs
