#4M : Funky Dance Party

Sorry about missing last week’s Monday’s Music Moves Me. I’ve just been really busy and was feeling a bit overwhelmed. The weather here has been pretty busy, too! Looks like this year is  going to be a real bumper crop year for snow!  Even places that don’t normally get snow are getting it!

So what do you do when you don’t want to go outside because it’s cold?  You have a dance party!

So how about it, folks.  Let’s get down and funky today!

Kicking off our dance party is none other than one of the Kings of Funk - George Clinton (no relation to Bill and Hillary!) with Atomic Dog.  Clinton hit number one on the Billboard R&B chart for the first time as a solo artist in 1982 with "Atomic Dog" from his debut solo album, Computer Games. The classic has been sampled dozens of times, including songs by Prince, The Notorious B.I.G., Tupac Shakur,  Dr. Dre, Nas, Aaliyah. Ice Cube, and Snoop Dogg.

That was a nice warm up. Let’s keep it moving with Sly & The Family Stone’s Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).  This song was the group's second single to reach the top of both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts. It was the number one R&B song for five weeks. The song features the ingenious bass line created by the legendary Larry Graham.

That’s it.. Now we’re feeling a good groove, and we don’t want it to stop. Next up is The Commodores with Brick House.  This popular tune peaked at #5 in the U.S. and #32 in the UK Singles Chart.

All of this dancing must be making you tired. Too bad!  James Brown is here to tell us to Get Up Offa That Thing.  Brown released "Get Up Offa that Thing" in 1976 as a two-part single. It reached number four on the R&B chart and was his biggest hit during the mid to late 1970s.

Now before you think that the men had all the funky tunes, Aretha Franklin joins in the fun with Rock Steady. The Queen of Soul proved she knew how to funk with this song. From her 1972 Young, Gifted and Black album, "Rock Steady" became her twelfth gold single. Franklin composed the song which featured Donny Hathaway on piano.

There are plenty more funky tunes out there, but this should get your day going! Stay warm and groovy, friends!

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked, Curious as a Cathy. , and Ramblin with AM. Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.  If you have a MUSIC* post, feel free to join in the fun! *sorry non-music posts are not permitted in this bloghop.

  1. Mary,

That fake Tucson mews clip cracked me up! Those guys have such a great sense of humor. You gotta love those boys in blue, eh? lol Snow isn't the issue with us lately, instead we got a lot of rain causing flash flooding around town with streets closed, cars getting stranded in the flood water or damaged along the interstate from hitting submerged potholes. It was ridiculous. We stayed in all weekend.

I'm glad you were able to be apart of the party today but I totally get ya when life kicks in it has a way of slamming ya sometimes. No worries, just join us when you can. You always have an open invitation. ;) Now, I'm digging your groovy sounds in this playlist. 'Brick House' had me chair boogieing. The Commodores had some great hits. James Brown's funky 70s ditty had me movin', too.

Have a boogietastic week, my friend!

    1. Thanks Cathy!

When my friend posted that clip on facebook, I literally burst out laughing. I have a good friend that moved from Idaho to Arizona and where he lives they've been hit with just short of 3 ft of snow... and it's still coming down for them. We had a big storm come through last night that closed all the roads. Now we're getting rain, so it's one big mess out there. We are prone to flooding here as well, so I guess it's a good thing I live on the second floor, huh?

      Have a great week!

    1. Thanks Patrick!

Looks like we've moved on to rain for the day, but that can change at any time here. As the locals say "If you don't like the weather - wait 10 minutes"

  3. Winter has been ridiculous all over, but snow in Tucson? That's truly nuts! At least they have a sense of humour about it.☺ The funky tunes are perfect for getting me out of my personal winter funk. Thanks for the party, Mary.

    1. Thanks for stopping by Debbie!

This weather has certainly been obnoxious. I am truly looking forward to spring and summer.

  4. That cop video was definitely a hoot! The weather I totally understand being as I'm about 45 minutes from Chicago, but we get that white stuff all the time. This year we hit our lowest like 25 below windchill factor... brrrrrr!!! That last tune of yours though was a hoot!

    1. Hi Marie!

Glad that you had a good time here today. We're now getting rain on top of all of that snow. Fun times.

  5. I love Rock Steady. Actually, I didn't discover this jem until Japanese pop singer Namie Amuro smapled it in her triple A-side single "60s70s80s". I love how Namie tributes this decade. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKv7MJ6AodM

  6. That 'news' clip was hilarious! Frozen water...aka snow... ;) Isn't it crazy how the weather has been truly wild this year?? We're looking at maybe another round of snow here in the Pacific Northwest later this week. I love snow, so it's 'snow big deal', but the hubby is *so* ready for spring. ;)

Great song choices!! Thanks for the dance! :)

  7. I needed a dose of funk on this March New York day - white sky, threat of snow in the forecast, single digit lows forecast for all week. When I was growing up I didn't like the funky music that much but now I love songs like "Brick House" and anything by James Brown. As for the weather video: My husband, who is an amateur weatherperson, was laughing and laughing at the "Tuscon Police Department" video-he watched it with me. We have suspicious white powder here too, if they want to come test it. Especially about an hour north of us.

  8. Oh the weather is definitely something. And I do understand feeling overwhelmed. I have been feeling the same way too.
    Thanks for the dance.
