#4M: Older Than Dirt Edition

Welcome back for Monday’s Music Moves Me (aka #4M)

It’s a new month and that means we have a new co-host/musical conductor, and that conductor is Yours Truly!

Today’s chosen theme is ‘Songs that were popular when you were in First Grade, or Age 6’
Now, you are all going to find out that I’m older than dirt… but I have news for you. There’s plenty of other people in this here Musical Blog Hop who’s dirt is older than mine!

With the help of Google, I’ve refreshed my borderline senility brain and have come up with a playlist of 10 Top Rock and Roll Songs from…. 1971 (yup, double checked with the calculator that’s the correct year)  This list is courtesy of playback.fm.

  1. The Chi-Lites - Have You Seen Her … Coincidentally, I recently watched an episode of Paternity Court where 2 people were trying to prove that Creadel Jones of The Chi-Lites is their father. They won their case.
  2. Sly & The Family Stone - Family Affair… Their first new material since the double a-sided single "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)"/ "Everybody Is a Star" nearly two years prior, "Family Affair" became the third and final number-one pop single for the band
  3. Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On … Originally inspired by a police brutality incident witnessed by Renaldo "Obie" Benson, the song was composed by Benson, Al Cleveland and Gaye and produced by Gaye himself.
  4. America - A Horse With No Name … Everyone wants to know why this horse didn’t have a name. According to a recent interview with Dewey Bunell, the horse did have a name ‘Noname’ pronounced know-naw-mee
  5. Al Green - Let’s Stay Together ...reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained on the chart for 16 weeks and also topped Billboard's R&B chart for nine weeks
  6. Rod Stewart - Maggie May … The song expresses the ambivalence and contradictory emotions of a boy involved in a relationship with an older woman and was written from Stewart's own experience. In the January 2007 issue of Q magazine, Stewart recalled: "Maggie May was more or less a true story, about the first woman I had sex with, at the 1961 Beaulieu Jazz Festival."The woman's name was not "Maggie May"; Stewart has stated that the name was taken from "... an old Liverpudlian song about a prostitute."
  7. James Taylor - You’ve Got a Friend … Was written by Carol King. Both Carol King and James Taylor recorded simultaneously in 1971 with shared musicians. James Taylor’s version reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the UK Singles Chart. "You've Got a Friend" won Grammy Awards both for Taylor (Best Male Pop Vocal Performance) and King (Song of the Year).
  8. Three Dog Night - Joy To The World … Probably one of my most favorite songs that year. Our elementary music teacher was sure to teach us this one. We all loved singing about that bullfrog and his wine :)
  9. T Rex - Get It On (Bang a Gong) … Written by frontman Marc Bolan, "Get It On" was the second chart-topper for T. Rex on the UK Singles Chart. In the United States, it was retitled "Bang a Gong " to avoid confusion with a song of the same name by the group Chase.  Yes, that *IS* Elton John in the video. He was just in the building at the time of performance. He didn’t record with the band.
  10. Freda Payne - Bring the Boys Home … Freda Payne emotionally pleaded with the politicians to end the war and send back the soldiers, noting the fathers and mothers left on the home front. It referenced the draft / call of Uncle Sam: "You marched them away...on ships and planes", and strongly attacked the purpose of the war, calling it "senseless" and "death in vain". Finally, Payne declared that "enough men have already been...killed". Influenced by the Philly Soul sound, with strings, the song had an upbeat tone, despite the serious and depressing lyrics, and it reached # 3 on the Billboard R&B charts, and # 12 on the pop charts.

  1. OK there, I am one of the "even older than dirt than you" crew. I was in college in 1971 and I'll just say I'm familiar with all of these....except "Bring The Boys Home" I have maybe very vague memories of that song. Also happy that you chose a live version of "Joy to the World". Thank you; enjoyed the musical memories.

  2. Mary,

Psst, psst, please get a little closer to the screen. *reach hand through computer screen, slap your forehead* There, that's for naming your post 'Older Than Dirt Edition'. What does that make me? Oh yeah, sexy! lol You know me and age, we're constantly battling to see who's gonna win and if I have my way it'll be me coming out victoriously. :)

Putting all silliness aside, I'm enjoying your playlist. When your song picks released in 1971, I turned 10 that December and was in grade 4 by that fall. Most of these songs probably were introduced to me by the older kids during lunch break as that's when the girls loved to play their 45s on the school record player. I loved watching the big girls dance and envied their abilities to boogie. America 'A Horse With No Name' always makes me think of the days I spent with my uncle and his wife during the summers. They'd always included their America album in their nightly mewsic rotation when I spent a week with them.

Thanks for coming up with some fabulous themes this month. You've been a great co-hostess and I hope you'll do it again in the not-so-distant future. I'll be joining you tomorrow for Rocktober Music Fest, so I'll see you then, as well for BoTB, my friend. You rock!

  5. I'll bet Rod Stewart was talking about the "Maggie May" The Beatles sing at the end of the "Let It Be" album. '71 is one of my favorite music years!

  6. My dirt is WAY older than yours, Mary! ☺ I was 16 in 1971 and know all of these songs, except the last one by Freda Payne. "What's Going On" was about a police brutality incident? Interesting! Rod tells that story about Maggie May every concert and never fails to perform it. A personal favourite.

  13. "Older Than Dirt" - you crack me up!! Great song list - my favorite is You've Got a Friend because of Toy Story, even though I had to watch that movie a million and one times with my best friend's son when he was little and I was watching him while visiting her on vacation while she went to work. :D Thanks for the fun dance!
