#RMF2019 #BOTB Jeff Healey vs Waylon Jennings

Welcome to RocktoberMusicFest2019!

This is the second year for this annual blog hop and I am looking forward to celebrating Rock Music with every one for the entire month.  If you’ve missed all of the previous notices about this event, you might be wondering just what it’s all about, or how you can join in the fun.  You can read the announcement HERE.  Or, if you have questions, I’m happy to respond to them in the comment section below.

Another tradition I have here on the blog is the Battle of the Bands. These take place on the 1st and the 15th of each month.  So today, I’m combining the two events into one giant ball of FUN!

As we are celebrating Rock Music, the song that I’ve chosen for today’s battle is in the Psychedelic Rock genre.

Wikipedia tells us this about today’s song:
"White Room" is a song by British rock band Cream, composed by bassist Jack Bruce with lyrics by poet Pete Brown. They recorded it for the studio half of the 1968 double album Wheels of Fire. In September, a shorter US single edit was released for AM radio stations, although album-oriented FM radio stations played the full album version. The subsequent UK single release in January 1969 used the full-length album version of the track.

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, let’s get this party started!

Contender #1 -  Jeff Healey

Contender #2 - Waylon Jennings

Now, to repeat myself:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog  (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for Jeff Healey or Waylon Jennings!
Voting will end on Monday, October 7 with results being posted on Tuesday, October 8.

I’d love for you to join me in celebrating Rock Music this month. All you need to do is drop the link to your current Rock Music post in the comments (Don’t forget to leave a vote here, too!) . Be sure to code with html so the link is clickable.  (See the announcement post for instructions on that) And then visit everyone that has left their links.

Oh My Goodness!! I can't believe I almost forgot to mention that today is Jingle Jangle Jungle's 5 year anniversary!

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for more #RMF fun!

  1. Waylon's version is very interesting and quite good I think, but Jeff Healey really nails the song. He is pretty close to the original as I remember it.

    This is a great Battle!

  2. Mary,

Interesting battle. I enjoyed the Waylon's mewsical arrangement but lacked the vocal punch. Like, Lee I think Jeff Healey nailed the cover keeping close to the original and earning my vote. :)

Thanks for dropping in to vote in my Oct 1st BoTB and I'm joining you in your 2nd #RMF which is featured at the end of my showdown post for anyone interested in partying with me. ;)

  3. I didn't know Waylon Jennings did a cover of White Room. It was pretty good and I loved the arrangement, but, as others have said, Jeff Healey's vocals brought it home, for me.

    Happy Rocktoberfest! 🤘🎸🎵

  4. Gotta go with Jeff Healey. As everyone so far has said, he is the closest to the original and while sometimes a different interpretation is nice, I don't think Waylon quite got it. Also, I'm joining the Rocktober Fest! Should be a fun time. Thanks Mary!

  5. I think I'm supposed to leave this here:

    Duane Eddy, “Rebel Rouser”

I'll go with Jeff Healey on this battle. Both seem to have gotten the overall sound, but Waylon's vocal sounded off.

  6. MMQE ~

As a huge fan of Waylon Jennings' music (he was officially the original "Country Outlaw" and one of my 5 favorite musicians of all time) I knew that he had covered Rock songs from time to time. For instance, I actually own copies of Waylon's take on 'Will The Wolf Survive?', 'Baker Street', and 'Chevy Van'. And although they're all pretty good, I always like Waylon best when he's taking names and kicking ass in his unique Country way.

It seemed a bit weird to hear Waylon doing a "Psychedelic" Rock song, and therefore, it would have been possible for me to vote for someone else over Waylon on this particular song. But that someone AIN'T Jeff Healey!

I won't say I'm gung-ho about Waylon's 'White Room' (he always belonged in a black hat, NOT in a White Room), but AT LEAST he sounded like Waylon. And I did really like the way he employed the background singers in his cover!

On the other hand, my complaint about the Jeff Healey version comes back to what I've said often in many places: If you're going to cover a song and make it sound almost EXACTLY like the original, why bother at all? In that case, I can just go and listen to the original hit instead of your cover. Don't waste my time with Xerox copies, damn it!

So, my bote goes to Waylon for sounding like Waylon doing a song by Cream. No points for Healey for just trying to imitate Cream. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it is NOT what an artist is supposed to be doing! An artist should be creating new art. (Booo! to you Jeff! Go find your own "voice"!)

  7. I may come back later with a Rocktober post of my own, but for the time being, I don't have one. I've been fighting non-stop with with my blog and YouTube and even my computer got in on the action by the time all was said and done, and I am exhausted from it.

As for the battle, I am casting my vote for Waylon as well. I love both Waylon AND Jeff Healy, and figured I'd like Jeff's better. But Waylon's hooked me right away - maybe it's just me because it's now October, but his musical styling on this song, combined with his deep voice gave it a spooky overtone. AND I LOVE IT!!!

We're here all month - and there's no true commitment to participate. It's mostly all about having fun and celebrating the music.

  8. Happy Rocktober Mary! "White Cream" is a classic song. It is one the staples in my childhood as my dad loves Cream. I am going to Waylon Jennings for this battle as I like his style better.
