#RMF2019: Steely Dan

Day 27 of #RocktoberMusicFest2019

Today’s feature has an infectious sound. Once you start listening to them, you just can’t stop.

Wikipedia tells us this about Steely Dan:
Steely Dan is an American rock band founded in 1972 by core members Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. Blending rock, jazz, latin music, reggae, traditional pop, R&B, blues, and sophisticated studio production with cryptic and ironic lyrics, the band enjoyed critical and commercial success starting from the early 1970s until breaking up in 1981. Throughout their career, the duo recorded with a revolving cast of session musicians, and in 1974 retired from live performances to become a studio-only band. Rolling Stone has called them "the perfect musical antiheroes for the Seventies".

Here are 10 of their songs:

  1. Rikki Don’t Lose That Number
  2. Peg
  3. My Old School
  4. FM (No Static At All)
  5. Do It Again
  6. Hey Nineteen
  7. Deacon Blues
  8. Reelin’ In The Years
  9. Kid Charlemagne
  10. Dirty Work

  1. Yes, Steely Dan is a good one. Wonder how they will do without Walter. They were the first band we saw that would not allow photos. Didn't like that very much but the songs were good.

    1. Oh that's too bad about not allowing photos. But then again, when you aren't concentrating on trying to find that perfect shot, you get to really enjoy the music.

  2. I always really dug STEELY DAN. (No commentary from MMQE on the meaning of their name? Ha!-Ha!)

I had a bunch of their Licorice Pizzas back in the era of Licorice Pizza. 'Babylon Sisters' has an earworm effect on me. And although 'Rikki' is probably my favorite Dan song, the LP I played the most was 1975's 'Katy Lied'. That is one of the weirdest Rock albums I ever heard, but somehow I found it incredibly appealing.

I am DEFINITELY going to listen to some Dan today! You really got me in the mood with this post.

    1. I really enjoyed Steely Dan as well (the band!) And have really come to appreciate their music in my later years .

I don't believe I have any of their albums, but little things throughout the day trigger songs for me. For example, when I play Bingo on my phone, and the caller says B19 - my brain automatically starts singing Hey Nineteen.

Hey look at this! I'm actually caught up on responding (for now)... just need to go visit a page or two and will be caught up there as well. Must be close to time for a nap - maybe I'll put on some Dan as well and stay awake.

  3. I was actually not much of a fan of Steely Dan when they were popular (though I somehow had the FM soundtrack when I was a little girl. I suppose my Mom bought it "for me", but she was the one who appreciated it more, lol!)

Though I like "Reelin' In The Years" and "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" okay, I've been meaning for a few years now to go back and give their music another listen as my tastes have changed some since I was younger.
