#BOTB: Battle of the Morrisons: Jim vs Van

Where did this year go? This past month flew by incredibly fast! Of course, I wasn’t feeling well for most of the time, so really kind of glad that it did go by quickly.

I want to take a moment before we get started with today’s battle to thank those of you who participated in the #RocktoberMusicFest2019. It was a successful Music Fest.

As part of the Music Fest, our battle of the band fearless leader Stephen joined in with a series of posts on Van Morrison. If you haven’t had a moment to check them out, you really should! During the course of our conversations, he proposed….  A battle of the Morrisons.  Of course, I jumped on the chance - and not only because I didn’t have anything lined up for today’s battle!  I truly like the idea,  and rumor has it that Stephen has a different battle of the Morrisons going on over at his place today.

Without further Ado….  let’s get this party started!

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Stephen says this about today’s song:
As I'm sure you know, Van Morrison, when he was fronting his Irish band 'Them' at the beginning of his career, wrote the song 'GLORIA' which has become a true Rock standard. Although it was never a Top 40 hit in the U.S., it is probably one of the first songs every bar band learns when they're first starting out to play live, because there's so much one can add to it.

Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, let’s get to it!

Contender #1 -  Van Morrison

Contender #2 - Jim Morrison

Now, to repeat myself:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for either Van or Jim Morrison by commenting in the comments below!
Voting will end on Thursday, November 7 with results being posted on Friday, November 8.

  1. Both versions are pretty similar which makes it a tough choice. I was going back and forth listening to the versions and found myself more drawn to the smoother delivery by Jim Morrison and the Doors.

I vote for Jim Morrison (again!).

  2. Sorry, I don't like either. Jim Morrison would be my favorite if he just sang the song instead of putting all the extras in.

  3. You know what I'd tell you: The Shadows Of Knight. That version went to #10 on the Hot 100 and #7 on the Cash Box Top Singles chart. All over the line "she comes to my room, she makes me feel all right," in the original Them tune. Which, incidentally, I'm voting for here.

I'm kind of baffled by Lee's comment that both versions are "pretty similar". Other than the fact that it's the SAME SONG - which means they would naturally be expected to sound somewhat similar - I don't think these versions are similar at all.

Morrison, VAN, performs the song like a funked-up James Brown kind of Soul song.

While Morrison, JIM, approaches it more like "Art Rock" or a kind of "Theatrical" presentation. Which, of course, was one of Jim Morrison's trademark innovations in Rock music. Stuffs like 'The Unknown Soldier' and 'When The Music's Over' and 'The End', when performed live, were done like small Rock music-plays or stage pieces that relied as much on Jim's "acting" as the actual background music.

That having been said, I prefer the Soulful James Brown-like sound of Morrison, VAN. That band that he had backing him - with those honkin' horns an' such - was one very groovin' collection of first-rate musicians.

  5. After voting for Jim over at Saint Mac's place, I was sure I would prefer him here. Its a really tough call though, I like each version separately, wouldn't turn the radio off on either. Love Van's subtlety with the lowered music, the horns. But in the end, Jim just has the sexyier delivery. So, Jim gets my vote after all - but it was a much tougher choice here than at Mac's place.

Have an awesome Weekend. I did not post so don't look for my Battle.

  6. Great minds think alike, yes? ☺ I picked Van at Stephen's, but am choosing Jim, here. I always loved his baritone voice and theatrics. Have a good weekend! Bet you're glad October is over.

  7. Mary,

I feel a bit like Janet. I'm not really crazy about either cover but I don't necessarily hate them. I certainly have favorite between these two artists. I think Jimbo gets my vote. I just preferred his style over Van's.

  8. I vote Jim Morrison's version as his baritone voice adds more of a flare to the tune.

  9. This is Birgit..not sure what's going on with my google. anyhoo, I give it to Jim Morrison because I just love his voice a bit more than Van Morrison's. It is a bit edgier and raw which i also like
