#4M: Under The Influence
It’s been a minute or two since I did the last ‘Under The Influence’. I’m hoping to do this theme a little more frequently.
Today, I’m under the influence of my oldest brother. Whenever I think of his music choices, this band always comes to mind. I think about the Vietnam War, and those who fought for our rights and freedoms. I also think about how they were mistreated when they returned home. My two oldest brothers had joined the Army before the end of Vietnam.
My oldest brother and I were 10 years apart in age, but we were the best of friends. I’ll never forget the days he came home from leave. He’d pick me up and swing me around, and I’d get the biggest bear hug from him. He also had a great sense of humor. There was a time when he lived in Spokane, Washington and I lived in Portland, Oregon. Spokane was getting hit with snowstorm after snowstorm while Portland was having heavy rains and flooding. He called me one evening during this time.
Me: Hello?
Bro: Hey, I’ll send you a rowboat if you’ll send me a snow shovel!
Me: Just stay indoors, you’ll be fine.
Bro: I can’t. I’m dying.
Me: We’re all dying.
<pause>
Me: Wait. Are you saying you’re dying at a faster rate then the rest of us?
Bro: That’s what I’m saying.
Another phone conversation probably a year later:
Me: Hello?
Bro: I fall down. Go Boom.
Me: Uh, what?
Bro: I fall down. Go Boom.
Me: What do you want me to do about it? Do I need to call your mommy so she can kiss it better?
Bro: I fall down. Go Boom.
Me: Okay, so you fell. Did anyone happen to see the act of grace?
Bro: Yes. Neighbor across the street watched me step off the top step and to flying down the steps.
Me: So after he finished laughing, what did he do?
Bro: He helped me up and took me to the hospital.
Me: Where was your wife during all of this?
Bro: She wasn’t home.
Me: Anything broken?
Bro: Just my pride… and a few cracked ribs. I’ll be fine.
Alright… enough reminiscing. On with the show we go...
Wikipedia tells us this about Creedence Clearwater Revival:
Creedence Clearwater Revival, also referred to as Creedence and CCR, was an American rock band which recorded and performed from 1968 to 1972. The band initially consisted of lead vocalist, lead guitarist, and primary songwriter John Fogerty; his brother, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty; bassist Stu Cook; and drummer Doug Clifford. These members had played together since 1959, first as the Blue Velvets and later as the Golliwogs.

ReplyDeleteI have three uncles who served in Vietnam. I think technically one was in Korea for that conflict but with these two wars so close to each other I can't remember which one it was who served. I don't remember the mistreatment of our soldiers but I have vague recollections of the protesting on TV. I didn't understand it and tuned it out. It's sad that people can be this cruel. These brave young men/women just did what was expected of them by the government. People's anger should've been directed at their elected officials. I have nothing but the utmost respect for our veterans living and dead for serving our country. I loved it when my uncles came home for leave. One of my uncles always brought me something from the faraway orient. My favorite thing was yellow silk kimono-style pjs. :) CCR has to be my favorite band from the 70s. They are a great example of classic rock. Thanks for sharing your 'under the influence' memories and mewsic. Have a boogietastic week and stay well, my dear! xx
I love CCR. Saw Fogerty in concert at Jones Beach a couple of years ago. Great show.
ReplyDeleteCCR were a fantastic band. I never heard: did John Fogerty get toether with Stu Cook and Doug Clifford to play, or is John still suing them?
ReplyDeleteCreedence Clearwater Revival, is a great dance group to say the least. Luvin' their tunes for sure. You have totally rocked the house girlfriend and sure brought back some great memories for me. I use to love to dance so much, but now being disabled sure puts a depression into one's soul. Guess that's why I listen to music so much! YOU ROCK! Have a great day. Stay healthy & safe!
ReplyDeleteLove CCR! Had most of their albums (back when they were LP albums) but there's one exception: Proud Mary. Tina Turner's cover is so much better. But you can't win them all. Have You Ever Seen the Rain and Fortunate Son are my two favorites of the set. 9 out of 10 greats ain't bad at all!
