#4M: Under The Influence: Three Dog Night

Today I am still under the musical influence of my oldest brother.  Another band that reminds me of him, as well of my older sister.

When I was just a little girl, I would tag along wherever and whenever I could. Sometimes the journey would be as close as next door. Our neighbor was just a few years older than my oldest siblings, but they really liked him and his ‘cool vibes’.  When my sister wasn’t around, he taught the boys and myself to play pinochle (although, to this day, I couldn’t even begin to tell you how it’s played!). He also had this really cool music recording studio set up in his basement. We would spend quite a bit of time there as well. My sister and this guy and a few others from the neighborhood had put together a little basement band, calling themselves “Young At Heart”. They mostly performed covers for the people at the local nursing home.  This neighbor also enjoyed making reel to reel tapes of vinyls and sharing those with my brothers. I’m telling you, the early 1970s was a great time to be alive - especially when it came to music.

I’ve chosen another band that takes me back to that time in my life, and makes me reminisce of days when I was young and oh so innocent.

Wikipedia tells us this about Three Dog Night:

Three Dog Night is an American rock band formed in 1967, with founding members consisting of vocalists Danny Hutton, Cory Wells, and Chuck Negron. This lineup was soon augmented by Jimmy Greenspoon, Joe Schermie, Michael Allsup, and Floyd Sneed. The band had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one. Three Dog Night recorded many songs written by outside song writers, and they helped to introduce mainstream audiences to writers such as Paul Williams and Hoyt Axton.

  1. Love Three Dog Night. Saw Chuck Negron perform a few years ago.

  2. I love Three Dog Night! We saw them in concert a few months ago, and they've still got it; however, this show was a redo. The first time we went to see them, the old drummer fell off of the stage, so the show was canceled. I guess with them all in their 70s climbing onto the stage is tricky.

  4. I loved the early 70's (I was in college) music and I loved Three Dog Night. I had their greatest hits album on vinyl. I never realized "Pieces of April" (which I don't recall being on the greatest hits album) was written by David Loggins. It is such a beautiful song.

  6. I never got into Three Dog Night (they were on some 8 tracks my parents had), but did like Black and White a lot. And in my teenage years, I'd come to read about the band getting up to a whole lot of no good (especially Chuck Negron), when I tried to go beyond my preferred music and learn about other artists.

I don't know if I've really been influenced by any band lately, but Pink Floyd always finds a way to "play" on repeat in my head, so maybe them. Though for Music Monday/4M purposes, I chose a song by Velvet Revolver that I hadn't heard in a while, then it just randomly popped up. Seriously, it had been a few years since I last listened to it.

I have a Battle of the Bands going on in that post as well - though I'm not sure who's participating this time around other than Mike, John, and myself.

  7. I always liked Three Dog Night, but I haven't listened to their music in quite some time. I think I might have a greatest hits of their music on CD somewhere. If I don't, I should.
