#Roadtrip: Manitoba

Time to hit the road!

The premise behind this theme is to pick a location, and highlight some or all of the musical artists (not inclusive) that are associated with that location. The locations will not be limited to the continental United States. We’re going Everywhere!

We were last in Alberta, so today we’re continuing east to Manitoba.

Today’s Roadtrip Playlist:

  1. Tom Cochrane - best known as the frontman for the rock band Red Rider and for his work as a solo singer-songwriter. Cochrane has won eight Juno Awards. He is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, an officer of the Order of Canada, and has an honorary doctorate from Brandon University. In September 2009, he was inducted onto the Canadian Walk of Fame. Today’s Song: Life Is A Highway
  2. Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Canadian rock group from Winnipeg, Manitoba founded by Randy Bachman and Fred Turner. Their 1970s catalogue included five Top 40 albums and six US Top 40 singles (eleven in Canada). The band has sold nearly 30 million albums worldwide, and has fans affectionately known as "gearheads" (derived from the band's gear-shaped logo) Today’s Song: Taking Care of Business
  3. Crash Test Dummies - Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Today’s Song: Superman Song
  4. The Guess Who - formed in Winnipeg in 1962. Initially gaining recognition in Canada, the group found international success from the late 1960s through the mid-1970s primarily under the leadership of songwriters Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman (later of Bachman–Turner Overdrive)  Today’s Song: No Sugar Tonight / New Mother Nature
  5. Neil Young - born in Ontario, but his musical career started in Winnipeg. Later, he moved to Los Angeles, joining Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and others. Since his early solo albums and those with his backing band Crazy Horse, Young has been prolific, recording a steady stream of studio and live albums. Today’s Song: Heart of Gold

I’m trying to keep the playlists to 5 tunes each, so if you know of an artist associated with the location that was not featured, be sure to mention them in the comments. There’s always a good chance we’ll be re-visiting locations.

See you again soon!

  1. "Life is a Highway" is GREAT to crank. Rascal Flatts and Chris LeDoux have their versions, but I definitely prefer Tom Cochran's.

I initially thought "Taking Care of Business" was "Taking Care of Fizz Fizz". Maybe they could change the lyrics to make a great jingle for an Alka Seltzer commercial!

    1. Hey Arnold!

Great to see you here again :) There's a local company here that call themselves 'Fizz Bizz'. Your comment reminded me of them. Hope all is well at your house. Is school back in session for you? Are you doing zoom teaching? How does one coach via Zoom? Inquiring minds want to know.

    2. Ha ha! You should have been a reporter for the National Enquirer!

We are finishing up our third week of school. I switched to the high school, and have only one subject--9th grade English (5 classes). We are distance learning--we do google meets 8:30-12:30 Mon.-Thur. Each period meets every other day. So I actually have to only prepare two lessons a week. Friday is reserved for reteaching and helping students who are failing or struggling, and also for staff and department meetings, and several hours to grade, lesson plan, etc. So between teaching just one subject (instead of five like the last several years) and distance learning, I'm not nearly as busy as usual. It's a good thing--gives me more time for lesson planning, family, etc. I'm not coaching--haven't coached for six years! Our sports are going, and are practicing social distancing and wearing masks. Supposedly. I have kids playing football and volleyball and that have turned into golf addicts.

I hope you are well, Mary. Your music blogs are the bomb! We really have to plan a Sun Valley reunion one of these days.

  2. I'm loving your Road Trip series, Mary! Of course, I'm a little biased, being Canadian. ☺ Tom Cochrane lives right here in my suburban Toronto town and has performed in a couple of local venues. Most people think "Life is a Highway" is a Rascal Flatts original, but we know better. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman have put their feud aside and were supposed to do a tour this summer, but, you know what happened. Optimistically, they have rescheduled it for 2021. LOVE Neil Young! We visited the Neil Young Museum in Northern Ontario a few years ago. Lots of cool stuff, including a full-size piano.

    1. Thank you, Debbie!

I had thought of this series earlier this year, but I was sidelined with health issues and I didn't have time to plan it out logistically - although I made the graphic for it months ago. I'm glad that I have the time to share this fun series. I'm learning quite a bit as I do my online traveling.

I've prewitten several of my posts, and if memory serves me correct, I'm dipping back down into the USA for a few weeks, and then I'll be back up in your neck of the woods.

BTW - I am hosting RocktoberMusicFest again this year, if you're interested in joining in.

Hope all is well with you.

  3. Mary, I hope you're feeling better and better as time goes on! ♥ Your music posts are always excellent. Blogging has fallen by the wayside for me, as I'm currently setting up an online business (only so many hours in a day!), but I may join in, here and here, for Rocktoberfest. Have a good weekend.
