#SS: Did You Think To Pray

Last week’s hymn brought to mind this other favorite hymn.

Sometimes we get busy and start to take our lives for granted. For instance, just the other day I was licking my wounds and feeling bad about the fact that I haven’t gone a full two weeks this year without something medical going on. Believe me, it can be overwhelming at times. Most of the time, though, I try to put on a brave, happy face and look for the positives in life.

But on this particular day, I was struggling.  And then something happened. Not to me, but it did make me realize that my life could be much worse.

I received a breaking news notification on my phone, and it was coming from a source that I trust, so I opened up the article and began to read.

The article was about a young boy, I believe it stated he was only 7 years old. He was on a camping trip with his family. He had been riding his bicycle on the dirt road, when a truck pulling a trailer was headed his direction. Like a well-trained child, he stopped riding, and got to the side of the road, out of the way. As the truck passed, the boy lost his balance and fell off the bike - falling under two sets of camper/trailer wheels.

The boy’s family immediately called 911. The just happened to be an ambulance that was coming from Montana on it’s way to a hospital in Idaho and they just happened to be two miles away from where the boy was camping. So the ambulance took a side trip to pick up the boy and his mother.

When the ambulance got to the hospital that it was headed to, it was apparent the boy needed trauma care and was airlifted to the next hospital down the road. There was an EMT/Firefighter that was headed that direction and offered to take the mother in the department vehicle with lights flashing, sirens blaring.

Despite the flashing lights and blaring sirens, a vehicle failed to yield to the department vehicle causing an accident.

Again, there just happened to be a passing nurse that was on her way to the hospital and offered to take the mother on to the hospital. When they arrived, they learned the boy had been stabilized but needed to be sent on down the road to the children’s hospital where he could receive even better care. So Mother and child were airlifted to the next hospital.

The boy underwent several surgeries, and it appears that he will be needing additional surgeries and physical therapy in the coming months. The kicker of it all…  the boy’s father was unable to visit either the Mother or the boy… because the patient in the initial ambulance had tested positive for Covid19.

Yes, I have my myriad of trials that seem to be endless, and just when I believe I see a light at the end of the tunnel, I am faced with yet another challenge. BUT, I am reminded that it could be much worse.
So what does this story have to do with today’s hymn?  I’m not sure, other that a reminder that we should pray often, to remain behind the shield of our Father in Heaven’s protection.  I also include my friends and family, as well as those I don’t know in my prayers. I honestly believe that every little bit helps in some way.

“Did You Think To Pray”

Ere you left your room this morning,
Did you think to pray?
In the name of Christ, our Savior,
Did you sue for loving favor
As a shield today?

[Chorus]
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day.
So, when life gets dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

When your heart was filled with anger,
Did you think to pray?
Did you plead for grace, my brother,
That you might forgive another
Who had crossed your way?

[Chorus]
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day.
So, when life gets dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

When sore trials came upon you,
Did you think to pray?
When your soul was full of sorrow,
Balm of Gilead did you borrow
At the gates of day?

[Chorus]
Oh, how praying rests the weary!
Prayer will change the night to day.
So, when life gets dark and dreary,
Don’t forget to pray.

  1. Wonderful story, Mary. When I'm feeling down about one thing or another, I don't have to look far to find someone who has it worse than me. And of course the Savior went through the most pain of all--physical and mental--all on behalf of us.

I loved your whole story, including the last paragraph about prayer. I believe what you said is true, that every little bit of prayer helps other people.

Prayers for you, Mary. Love you!

  2. We can always find someone with a worse struggle than our own. That was a pretty amazing story. I try to pray and be thankful in good times as well as bad.

  3. I say A-list prayers to God and Christ Yeshua two or three times every single day (and that does NOT count when I thank God in prayer before each meal).

There is a unique prayer that I feel The Holy Spirit taught me many years ago, and I feel that it is a "perfect" prayer. I call it 'Ol' kd's Morning Prayer', and I recently taught it to my Brother, who moved in with me about 3 weeks ago.

And 'The Lord's Prayer', taught to us by Christ Yeshua, is the central part of all my daily meditation sessions.

    Be sincere in your prayers.

The very act of prayer honors God and gives glory to God, for it confesses that God is what He is.
