Rocktober 2, 2023

Rocktober 2nd!.

Here we go!

Just a reminder that the songs that I am bringing to you this month are based on some survey from some website (I don’t even recall where, so don’t ask) They had fans respond with their favorite Rock tunes, and these are the top 31(ish) I say ish because I out-voted one or two that I didn’t agree with in their ranking. We’re working our way up to the Number One spot.

Today our song is: Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

Smells Like Teen Spirit is a song by the American rock band Nirvana. It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind (1991), released on DGC Records. The unexpected success of the song propelled Nevermind to the top of several albums charts at the start of 1992, an event often marked as the point when grunge entered the mainstream. It was Nirvana's biggest hit, charting high on music industry charts around the world in 1991 and 1992, and was number one on the charts in Belgium, France, New Zealand and Spain. It was met with wide critical acclaim, and described as an "anthem for apathetic kids" of Generation X. Although Nirvana grew uncomfortable with the mainstream and commercial attention the song brought to them, listeners and critics continue to praise "Smells Like Teen Spirit" as one of the greatest songs of all time.

The title derives from a phrase written on Cobain's wall by his friend Kathleen Hanna, singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill: "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit." Hanna meant that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which she and Tobi Vail, his then-girlfriend, had discovered during a trip to the grocery store. Cobain said that he was unaware of the deodorant until months after the single was released, and had interpreted it as a revolutionary slogan, as they had been discussing anarchism and punk rock.

Be sure to stop by tomorrow to see what is next on the list! Feel free to join in the fun. The more the merrier, I say!

  1. Mary,

I'm not sure if I remember Nirvana or this song when it came out like a lot of songs from the early 90s but blogging has introduced me to lost music over the years including "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

Thanks for joining the 4M party, my dear. Have a boogietastic week!

  2. Hello Girlfriend, How ya be? Great I hope. Haven't talk to you in a while... I finally got my act together since my back surgeries... It was a bummer, but I'm doin' better now. I haven't heard this tune in a while... You've really rocked the house! Have a great day!

  4. Interesting song choice today. I never actually listened to it before, though I certainly heard it everywhere as I carted the neighborhood kids (including mine) to school each morning. "Here we are now, entertain us" kinda resonates ;-)

  6. This is an iconic song but I would have placed Satisfaction ahead if this one:)

  7. I have to apologize for this in advance. When I hear this song I immediately think of Weird Al's Smells Like Nirvana - both the song and the video, which are ultimate rock parodies. I didn't know the backstory (ie Kurt Corbain not knowing about the deodorant) and maybe we should all be thankful he didn't. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
