#FridayFive - Misheard Lyrics

Some time ago, I wrote a post about ELO and in that post, there was a mention of ELO's song "Don't Bring Me Down" and the often misheard lyric in that song. There was a bit of a discussion among friends and I knew then I wanted to do a piece about misheard lyrics. With the Friday Five, I am happy to finally bring you a small number of songs that have misheard lyrics.

The Friday Five was born out of inspiration from John at Sound of One Hand Typing. If you have a moment, please stop by his page and see what he's been up to lately. Always entertaining things going on over there.

In doing some research on the topic, I found there are many many songs that have misheard lyrics. Either that, or people were just trying to be silly and make stuff up.

Because it is Friday, I'm going to try to keep this short and sweet. Of course, if you have other songs that you would like to add to the list, feel free to add them in the comments. If there are enough, I may do a part 2 post in my next Friday Five.

First up, we have Dire Straits "Money For Nothing"

Misheard Lyrics:
We got some movies, refrigerators
We got some movies, color TVs
Original Lyrics:
We gotta move these refrigerators
We gotta move these color TVs

Next we have Kenny Rogers "Lucille"
This had quite a few variations, but I'm leaving you with the one that I always sang wrong.

Misheard Lyrics:
You picked the fine time to leave me, Lucille
Four hundred children and a crop in the field
Original Lyrics:
You picked the fine time to leave me, Lucille
Four hungry children and a crop in the field

We certainly can't have this segment without mentioning Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze"

Misheard Lyrics:
Scuse me, while I kiss this guy
Original Lyrics:
Scuse me, while I kiss the sky

We're going to dial it back just a little with Neil Diamond "Heartlight"

Misheard Lyrics:
Turn on your hot light
Original Lyrics:
Turn on your heartlight

And finally, Steely Dan "Reelin' in the Years"

Misheard Lyrics:
Are you reeling in the heat?
Storin' away the time?
Are you gathering up the teeth?
Have you had enough of mine?
Original Lyrics:
Are you reeling in the years?
Stowing away the time?
Are you gathering up the tears?
Have you had enough of mine?

You can listen to the playlist here, if you're interested.

What does tomorrow bring?

Tune in to find out...
