Rocktober

Welcome to Rocktober!

Rocktober 1st marks the date of Jingle Jangle Jungle’s blogiversary. We are celebrating three years of music blogging.  Jingle Jangle Jungle got it’s start with a little bit of inspiration from my nephew. He would celebrate Rocktober each day in October with a musical post on Facebook.  I’ve always enjoyed good, classic rock and wanted a place to showcase various songs and artists as well as their stories.  Of course, I enjoy other genres of music, and this blog is a great way to expand that appreciation.  While I am not blogging every day this month, I do plan on my posts this month to center around the appreciation of Rock.

Today, I bring you five of my favorite Rock songs (in no particular order). Using a playlist to help speed up the page loading time.

  1. "Back in Black" is a song by AC/DC, appearing as the first track on side two of their 1980 album of the same name. Known for its opening guitar riff, the song was AC/DC's tribute to their former singer Bon Scott. His replacement Brian Johnson recalled to Mojo magazine in 2009 that when the band asked him to write a lyric for this song, "they said, 'it can't be morbid – it has to be for Bon and it has to be a celebration.'" He added: "I thought, 'Well no pressure there, then'. I just wrote what came into my head, which at the time seemed like mumbo, jumbo. 'Nine lives. Cats eyes. Abusing every one of them and running wild.' The boys got it though. They saw Bon's life in that lyric."
  2. "Smoke on the Water" is a song by the English rock band Deep Purple. It was first released on their 1972 album Machine Head. The lyrics tell a true story.
  3. "Sweet Child o' Mine" is a song by the American rock band Guns N' Roses, featured on their debut album, Appetite for Destruction. Released in August 1988 as the album's third single, the song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart, becoming the band's first and only number-one single in the U.S..
  4. "Tom Sawyer" is a song by Canadian rock band Rush, originally released on their 1981 album Moving Pictures as its opener. The song relies heavily on Geddy Lee's synthesizer playing and Neil Peart's drumming. Lee has referred to the track as the band's "defining piece of music...from the early '80s". It is one of Rush's best-known songs and a staple of both classic rock radio and Rush's live performances, having been played on every concert tour since its release.
  5. "Rock of Ages" is a song by Def Leppard from their 1983 album Pyromania. When released as a single in the United States, the song reached number 16 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and number one on the Top Tracks rock chart.

What is your favorite rock song?  Do you have a favorite rock group? Will you be celebrating Rocktober with me?

  7. Hey Mary. Love your Rocktober list of your favs! Back in Black and Smoke on the Water are big favs of mine too. I also love Deep Purple's Space Truckin. Machine Head was a very worn 8-track in my Monte Carlo!

    1. PS: I changed my post a) to include the 4M (thanks for the reminder) and b) to address the conflicting reports about Tom Petty. At first when I read your comment, I thought CBS was reporting a hoax and it sure would've been better had that been the case but at this point, it doesn't look good... So sad. His poor wife, dealing with his emergency situation and then to have to have media putting out false information about him.

    2. Thanks for props on my Rocktober list. This is usually one of my favorite months, but it has sure got off to a bumpy start. (I almost said rocky, but it definitely isn't Rock-y).

My heart aches for those in Las Vegas, and for Tom Petty's wife and family. I think Tom Petty said it best with these lyrics "You can stand me up against the gates of hell, but I won't back down" I know that they took him off of life support, but I fear that he went too long before receiving care, and it's just a matter of hours before he really goes.

Good to have you join us in the Monday dance!

  8. Aside from AC/DC I can go along with all of your song picks. There are so many great rock groups that play in so many rock styles that it's difficult to pick. Led Zep definitely comes to mind, but I could keep on going.

  9. Great songs! I listened to all the Peter Gabriel on my iPod yesterday while writing and then running errands. Still can't stop listening to young rockers Palaye Royale on a daily basis. So much good music in my life. I'm blessed. Be well!

  11. Happy Blog Anniversary! These songs are terrific. I remember my brother and some of his high school band mates playing ""Smoke On The Water". I like Steven Tyler's version of "Sweet Child of Mine. " Thanks for the linky.

  12. SMOKE ON THE WATER is a true classic, and so is the album it came from. (I just now put on MACHINE HEAD -- one of only a small number of Classic Rock albums that I loved as a teenager and still dig as a greybeard.)

    >>... What is your favorite rock song? Do you have a favorite rock group?

Favorite Rock song is SPIRIT IN THE SKY by Norman Greenbaum. (Maybe I'll play that next.)

Favorite Rock group? Hmmm.... Well, if you don't mean solo artists (like Bob Dylan) and if you don't necessarily mean "Hard" Rock, then I would say THE BEACH BOYS.
