#RocktoberMusicFest : Traveling Wilburys - End Of The Line

In the late 1980’s friends Jeff Lynne and George Harrison were working on songs for George’s upcoming album, Cloud Nine.  The idea of collaborations got them to talking and they invited their friends Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan to join in the songwriting sessions. They decided to do a bonus track for George, but the track proved to be too good to be something on it’s own - so they set out to record a full album. They decided to call themselves the Traveling Wilburys.

The project's work received much anticipation given the diverse nature of the singer-songwriters. Eager to maintain a degree of anonymity, the band members adopted pseudonyms as half-brothers from a fictional Wilbury family of traveling musicians. Vol. 1 was a critical and commercial success, helping to revitalize Dylan and Petty's respective careers. In 1990, the album won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

“End Of The Line” is the final track of the debut album. In December 1988, Roy Orbison suffered a heart attack and died. The video was filmed after Roy’s passing, but the band did not want him to be left out. To honour the loss of Orbison, a shot of a guitar sitting in a rocking chair next to a photo of him was used when his vocals are heard.
