#BattleOfTheBands Results : Look What They've Done To My Song, Ma

Look what they’ve done to my song, Ma!  I’m sure many artists who have had their songs covered have wanted to say this very thing.  Some may be rolling over like Beethoven, while others are very much flattered.

Melanie Safka wrote the song in 1970 and it was used as the B-side to her cover of “Ruby Tuesday”

I’ve always enjoyed Melanie’s songs. Whenever I hear her name, I immediately think of “Brand New Key”. Then that song gets stuck in my head until the next earworm shows up.

But let’s get on to the results of this battle.  The first two votes looked promising, as they were each for the two contenders. But then The New Seekers took off on mad dash. Thank goodness a few more votes came in to save Ray Coniff from a huge defeat.

The final tally -

The New Seekers with 7 votes
Ray Coniff with 3 votes

Let’s hear it for Melanie - the true winner!

What did you think of this battle? Do you have a favorite Melanie song?

Be sure to come back on the 1st for another battle. Not quite sure what I’ve got planned yet, so it’ll be a surprise for us all.

Pretty conclusive outcome, especially for a lower voter turnout tally. Where'd everybody go for you this round? You generally have a more impressive vote total. Did you offend a bunch of people somehow? (That's supposed to be MY job!) Scare 'em away with your switchblade nails? :-)

    >>... "Not quite sure what I’ve got planned yet..."

I'm pretty sure that means you don't have ANYTHING "planned". But then again, I could be wrong, as I was just a "C" student in English.

Yeah, I've always liked Melanie's 'Brand New Key' song, too!

Damn! I think that song's gonna be stuck in my head now, and I'm about to try to go to sleep. I'll get you for this, my pretty! And your little dog, too!!

Like you, I have been insanely busy. I didn't promote the post for comments in the places I normally do. I'm not sure I'd have the patience to deal with the non-voters.

Are you super excited about your move? I'm kind of a excited for you, if you aren't. These new chapters in our lives are quite interesting, in my opinion.

You know... I don't have my battle planned for the 1st yet.. but I did manage to plan one for April 1. Perhaps tomorrow I will have a moment to figure it all out.

      Ha!-Ha! Well, thanks!!

Yeah, I'm kind of excited. Sort of half-relived & half-excited. There's still so much I need to do - phone calls to make, crap to pack, a U-Haul truck to rent, moving everything with some arthritis, etc. - that I'm still in that semi-stressful space (not to be confused with a Millennial Safe Space).

But the house is mine and the last of the paperwork was signed yesterday at 3:00 PM.

I sense - and hope to God I'm right about it - that the town I'm moving to will become my favorite place I've ever lived. Or very close, anyway. ("Dogtown" from 1969-1985 is damned hard to beat!) But best of all will be knowing that I will never again have to drive on the Reno freeway. Those shit-for-brains can have it!

This is where you hire someone else to do it for you! It will save what is left of your sanity.

I think I've got it figured out now. A month or so ago I gave our friend Michele a battle suggestion, but she had something else planned and then she went on hiatus. I believe that I will be using said battle on the first. Speaking of Michele.. I sure miss that girl! I hope she comes back soon.

Best of luck on that move!

  2. I thought the New Seekers would win. ☺ My favourite Melanie song (and in the top 5 overall) is Lay Down - Candles in the Rain. Gives me chills, every time! ♥

  3. Not as bad of a loss that I expected for Ray. Still his group is the real winner in my ears.

  4. Mary,

I'm sorry for just spotting your results post. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed but I'll get things undercontrol before I'm bried under things. Oh, it's nothing just every day stuff that kinda pushes ya a bit more than you'd like. Anyhow, I sided with the winner. The Seekers definitely were the stars of this showdown. 'Brand New Key' is gonna be stuck in my head today, you know that, right? lol That's my favorite of these two Melanie songs. I'm not sure what else she did but BNK always makes me smile. It's a huge part of my childhood somehow and I'm not even sure why that it is. Maybe you can use one of these songs in your Feb. 1st battle. Thanks for sharing the outcome and I'll see ya around, girl! ;)
