#BattleOfTheBands : The Crazy Battle

Holy smokes it’s the middle of the month and that means it time for another Battle of the Bands! (Didn’t we just do this?)  I know, right?!?

One might say we’re …

CRAZY

It’s been almost a year since I hosted a tournament style battle, and I think it’s time for another one -  Not because I love tournaments, but because I found too many good contenders for this song, and I need your help to narrow it down to ‘da Best!’

So this is how it’s all going to go down -

I’m posting 2 of the contenders in this battle, and then on the next battle, I’ve got 2 more contenders.  Then I will put the 2 winners up against each other.

Sound like fun?

Alrighty then.. Let’s do this!

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos (unless specifically requested - in the case of today’s battle, listening is more important than watching)

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one who’s name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

"Crazy" is the debut single by the American soul duo Gnarls Barkley (a group consisting of Danger Mouse and CeeLo Green), taken from their 2006 debut album St. Elsewhere. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand and other countries.

The song was leaked in late 2005, months before its regular release, and received a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom, most notably by radio DJ Zane Lowe, who also used the song in television commercials for his show. When it was finally released in March 2006, it became the first single to top the UK Singles Chart on download sales alone. The song remained at the top of the British charts for nine weeks (which no other song had achieved in over ten years, and was only surpassed by Rihanna's "Umbrella" in July 2007) before the band and their record company decided to remove the single from music stores in the country so people would "remember the song fondly and not get sick of it". In spite of this deletion, the song became best-selling single of 2006 in the UK. Due to continued download sales, it reached one million copies in January 2011. In December 2006, it was nominated for the United Kingdom's Record of the Year but lost to "Patience" by Take That.

The song won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007, and was also nominated for Record of the Year, which it lost to "Not Ready to Make Nice" by Dixie Chicks. It was also nominated and further won a 2006 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song. The song was also named the best song of 2006 by Rolling Stone and by The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll. The song was listed at number 11 on Pitchfork Media's top 500 songs of the 2000s. The song is also in the number 60 place in the list of the best songs ever of Acclaimed Music. In 2010, it was placed at number 100 in the "updated" version of Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and ranked at the top position of Rolling Stone's top 100 songs of the decade (2000–2009). "Crazy" was notably performed at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, with Danger Mouse and CeeLo dressed as various Star Wars characters.

Contender #1 - Sheridan Smith

Contender #2 - Glass Animals

Now, to repeat myself again:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for either Sheridan Smith or Glass Animals!  Voting will end on Thursday, March 21 with results being posted on Friday, March 22.

Gotta run for now... I smell something burning!

  1. This is a really cool Battle. To start with, I like this song a whole lot and both covers are outstanding. I keep changing my mind so I guess I'll just have to vote for both of them.

    Okay--just one. Grrrr!

It's gonna be Sheridan Smith for me. But Glass Animals are really really good.

    GUFFAW-OUT-LOUD!!

Well, MMQE, I'm going to end the shutout and vote for 'GLASS ANIMALS'.

Whew! I'll bet you were starting to get nervous, eh? Thought you had a shutout on your hands? But, NO! Just like Mighty Mouse... [Link> "Here I come to save the day!!"

After I wrote this post, I realized I should have one more battle in there - the battle for 3rd place. I'll put the 2 non-winners up against each other. Maybe call it the 'best of the worst' LOL

  3. I like this song quite a bit and i have to give it to Sheridan Smith who sang it so sultry but with a hint of the nuts. The band is good but they just didn't do anything for me

  4. You've done it again, Mary! ☺ Great original song! Both contenders are equally good and it's a tough choice. Slight edge to Glass Animals for the "toe tapping" factor.

If I'm being honest, I think the next 2 contenders are even better than these 2 - so it's going to be really tough.

  5. Wow, two truly great versions...I gotta confess, this is a favorite song of mine anyhow. I think CeeLo Green is a character and a half, but the man can sing.

You know who else can sing? GLASS ANIMALS

I hope you're having the time of your life...but think twice...that's my only advice (ha ha ha).

Great master list for the BOTB. I hope I copied it to my drive without messin' with the original. Thanks, Mary!

If Glass Animals lose this battle, they'll have the opportunity to go up against the non-winner of the next set of contenders.

  7. OK what we have here are two equally matched singers, who aren't really that strong of singers, but even caliber. That means I have to go to the bands and their styles. The first one started out like a mouse then jumped to tiger which was a little patchy. The second one is minimalist but smoothly transitions into the loudness. The musicians in the 2nd are better coordinated and I love that keyboard sound. My vote goes to contender #2.

I agree they both could do better. You'll see what I mean in the next round. I think I've got 2 additional contenders that will make these guys want to step up their game.

  9. Mary,

'Crazy' is great get-to-your-feet dance song. You made this showdown challenging with two excellent new-to-me cover artists. How do I decide? Each singer brings their own style to her/his rendition totally selling. I think any other day, I'd go with Sheridan but not this morning as I am totally digging (slighly more) GLASS ANIMALS! I shall look forward to more in this tournment series. Have a pAwesome week, my friend!

  10. Hi Mary!

A Tournament! What a clever way to keep 'em coming ;-) I actually didn't recognize the song till half-way through Sheridan. She did alright, but I listened to Glass Animals twice because I liked it so much. I even got my budding drummer friend, the Stickmaster to weigh in and he agreed that Glass Animals earned the vote. Is there a voting age requirement? (He's 12) If not, put us down for 2 votes for Glass Animals, please ;-)

You got it - 2 votes for Glass Animals. I'm a little excited about the tournament and I hope it goes over well without people tiring of hearing the same song so many times. Thanks for stopping by with your vote(s)

  11. Mary, this was a hard battle because both versions were wonderful. I like the first one because I love the slow tempo and electric guitar. But I like the Glass Animals more because I love the singer's voice and that opening.

So, my vote goes to Glass Animals.
