#4M : YouTube Roulette

Welcome back to Monday’s Music Moves Me!

A new month. A new Musical Conductor! Congrats to Michele from Angels Bark ! Michele has been away from the blogging scene for a minute or two - due to shoulder surgery and other first world problems, but I am especially happy to see her back. I have missed her very much! As musical conductor, Michele gets to choose our themes for this month.

Today’s theme is ‘Free Choice’ - meaning we get to do what we want today. Having just completed the #A2ZChallenge (you can read my reflections post HERE), some of you may know that I’ve had some of my own first world problems this past month.  I usually have my posts written well in advance, but can you believe it - it’s late Sunday afternoon and I’m just now putting together this post!  I feel like I am very much behind schedule. At any rate, I decided to do something a little different today.

I’m going to call it ‘YouTube Roulette’

YouTube gives me recommendations of what to watch and listen to all the time. Many of those recommendations are related videos to what I’ve recently seen - most of them come from visits to other music bloggers posts and challenges.   I’m taking it one step further. You know how in the YouTube app, it gives you the option to play ‘Up Next’?  First, I'll share with you the recommended song, and then I'll share the 'Up Next'.  This will be interesting, as I have no idea what to expect and it will be a surprise for all of us.

YouTube recommends: The Surfrajettes - Britney Spears Toxic Surf Cover

Up Next:

YouTube recommends: David Bowie/Eddie Vedder "Comfortably Numb"--A Fan Edit

Up Next:

YouTube recommends: Rag'N'Bone Man - Gimme Shelter (The Rolling Stones cover in the Live Lounge)

Up Next:

YouTube recommends: The Wailers - "Stir It Up" @ The Old Grey Whistle Test (5/1/1973)

Up Next:

YouTube recommends: (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay | Otis Redding 50th Anniversary | Song Around The World

Up Next:

Well now, that was fun! I got lucky in that there were no regional restrictions on any of those videos.  I might have to play roulette again when I’m stuck for an idea. Was this fun for you? Should I do it again another time?

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by JAmerican Spice, Stacy Uncorked, Curious as a Cathy. , and Ramblin with AM. Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.  If you have a MUSIC* post, feel free to join in the fun! *sorry non-music posts are not permitted in this bloghop.

  1. Wow! Youtube roulette turned out very well. Loved the Surfrajettes and The Dead South were fun. Some great covers here - good material for future BOTBs.
The kids were cute, too. I'm so happy Michele is coming back! ☺

    1. Thanks, Debbie!

I've really taken a liking to The Dead South. I think their song 'Banjo Odyssey' is pretty funny, yet disturbing if you think about the lyrics.

  2. Mary,

Great theme title. I might have to borrow that sometime. :) Your YT recommendation were pAwesome choices. I don't seem to get furtastic highlights as you. The Surfrajettes really jammed it, didn't they? The Rag'NBone Man has gr8 vocals - I love the gritty, soulful sound. Like you, I'm happy to have Michele back in Blogosphere, as I've missed her, too. Of course, I understand she had to take care of herself which is far more important. Well...dearie thanks for hitting the dance floor with us and I hope you have a boogietastic week! ;)

I really do think that I will use this one again. The Roulette was a lot of fun, and being what it is, I know the results will be different every time.

I think it was last year when I discovered The Dead South as well. They just keep popping up into my recommendations. I wonder what YouTube is trying to tell me.. LOL

  5. I love this You Tube Roulette idea. I rarely check out the "suggested songs". Hmmm. Never heard of The Surfrajettes - Britney Spears Toxic Surf Cover, and I loved the retro vibe and the aqua guitar - all it lacked was fishnet stockings to match the go-go boots. I know I ran into The Dead South and that song in another Music Moves Me post. The David Bowie/Eddie Vedder cover of Comfortably Numb - wasn't that impressed by Bowie but Vedder's voice, I thought, was perfect for the song. The Chris Cornell cover - yes! Gimme Shelter - no. Florence and the Machine covering The Chain - resounding YES! Both Wailers and Bob Marley - YES! (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay was fantastic - and I so enjoyed all the musicians especially Otis Redding's children. And finally Don't Worry, Be Happy - loved the children doing it. Yes, please do it again!

    1. Hi Alana!

I think I just might do this again. Lots of fun, plus we get to be introduced to new artists and covers and new songs. Maybe I'll do this again for all of my Free Choice weeks. LOL

  6. Ah, sweet Mary! How ya doin' Girl?? I've missed you!! So glad we can reconnect and catch up. So sorry I've been so far removed lately. Life, ya know? Oh well, whatever... My new mantra: "Oh well. Whatever." Seems to be working, for now anyway. :)

Hey, this YouTube Roulette was super cool! What a great idea! I still haven't figured out how to get YouTube to send me recommendations! I have it set up in Settings to send me emails about Recommended videos, so why I don't get them is beyond me. But it shouldn't surprise: Facebook screws me all the time with not sending me alerts etc. So, oh well, whatever. haha

I'm at the point of listening to The Chain, which is one of my favorite Fleetwood Mac songs. I thought that was cool that Florence & the Machine claimed they were never ever going to perform that song again and only those folks at that show would catch it live. What year was that, I wonder? She did a great job with it.

The Suffragettes were cool. Reminded me of a very mod girl band from the 60s. Loved their outfits. The look was very 60s.
Those southern dudes, Dead South, are good too. I've seen something else by them and liked it. They have an unmistakable and unforgettable style and look. Will have to keep checking them out.

The reggae set was cool too. I have to be in the mood for the reggae sound and I guess I was tonight because it worked for me.

Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay is my all-time favorite. What a wonderful tribute having all those artists around the world contribute to that cover. And it was neat to see Otis' relatives. I'm assuming his sons??

The Don't Worry BE Happy kids were fun. Nice to see all that young talent and how much joy music brings to their little souls... Love it!

Every time I see Chris Connell or anything about him it makes me sad. Such a tragic ending. Whatever happened with his widow's lawsuit? The hotel should've had to pay some restitution too being that they refused two requests from his security guy to open Chris' room. That cost valuable time and who knows, perhaps he could've been saved.
I'm just glad you didn't end with that one. Ending with Don't Worry, Be Happy was a great choice!

YouTube Roulette: you definitely have to do this one again.
Soooo glad to be back playing with you all in the music sandbox...

    talk soon.
    Love ya,

    Michele at Angels Bark

    1. Aww Michele!

It's so good to have you back. You *ARE* back, aren't you? Please say yes.

Re:Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay - I hadn't paid much attention to the video or who was singing. LOL But I did just revisit the video and sure enough in the description it mentions who I believe to be his sons.

My brain is officially mush. Each day is a struggle to keep up, but I'm keeping on keeping on. I gots to. It's the only thing going for me.

      Catch up with you later!

    2. Brain mush, I know it well. We must catch up! The next few days are nuts with multiple appointment days and dog arrivals but let's connect over the weekend...
In answer to your question: I think I'm back...
