#BattleOfTheBands : The P!nk Battle

Hey there! Time for another round of Battle of the Bands! While I was researching the interwebs trying to put together another fun battle for you, I almost ended up with another tournament.

I know you guys enjoy them from time to time, but I think a back to back tournament might be a bit much.  So, I had to listen to my contenders multiple times to eliminate one from the battle. It was a good one, but I think when put up against the others they just wouldn’t fare as well.

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

"Get the Party Started" is a song by American recording artist Pink, and was the first single from her second album titled Missundaztood (2001). It became an international hit and reached the top ten in many countries. The song was Pink's biggest-selling song at that time. The track was released on October 9, 2001 to positive reviews. After the release of the single, it was confirmed that Pink would be releasing Missundaztood.

The song was composed by former 4 Non Blondes frontwoman, Linda Perry. She said that the process of making the song was "so unlike me"; according to her, she was going through a "weird phase" during which she wanted to learn how to program drums. She programmed her first beat, picked up a bass guitar, and, in her words, "did what the beat was asking me to do." She decided to put "every wrong instrument" in the song, and consequently acquired a horn sample. "I was doing the music, the melody was already coming to me in what I wanted the song to be," she said. She finished the song by including in the song "every catch phrase you possibly could imagine", before laughing at the realization that she had written a potential hit single and her first dance song. "You create something in your bedroom or your house, and it's just a fun thing that you're doing," she said. "Then all of a sudden, you hear that song that you started in your house, and it's on the radio. And people are now acknowledging it. It's just trippy." In 2019, Perry revealed that she had initially written the song for Madonna, who turned it down.

Please listen to each of the three contenders. Each one brings a completely different style to the song.

Contender #1 - Dick Brave and The Backbeats

Contender #2 - The ReBeatles Project

Contender #3 - Stella Starlight Trio

Now, to repeat myself again:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

  1. That was different. Or should I say those were different? That's an interesting selection of stylistic choices.

Dick Brave won me over from the start, but then came the Beatle band and I liked that. The SS Trio was so groovy and nice for my late night listening.

But the one that grabs me for my vote is ReBeatles Project for their unique and fun approach. It really does work!

That was a video I stumbled upon by accident. I really enjoyed their take on the song as well.

  2. Mary,

Cool mewsicians covering P!nk's hit song. Dick Brave kept the closest to the original. I was tapping my toes and chairing boogieing to their version. I enjoyed the ReBeatles but their rendition didn't quite have what I was looking for. SS Trio...WOW, I totally digged what she did with P!nk's song!! While the melody stayed close to the original, she slowed the tempo down and infused a jazzy tone to it coupled with her smoky vocals really won me over. Give my vote to Stella Starlight Trio. Now to listen to more by them on YT. Great battle!

    1. Thanks, Cathy!

The artist/band that didn't make the cut was also a jazzy tune. It supposedly charted well, but when I compared the two against each other with my own ears, the other just didn't do it for me. Perhaps I will share that one in the results post :)

  3. This is so cool, Mary! Three completely unique takes and all good. Makes for a tough battle. ☺ I was fascinated by The ReBeatles Project and will look for more of their material. In the end though, I'm giving my vote to the smooth jazz version by the Stella Starlight Trio. Love the vocals!

We must have been on the same kind of wave length for this battle. It's fun to hear the songs in various styles.

  4. MARY, MARY, QUITE EXTRAORDINARY ~

I just came from Debbie's Battle and was totally enthused about how she'd found two terrific versions of the same song but arranged radically different. I LOVE that stuffs! And here I find you've done the same thing, with three versions. I digs it!

I'd never even heard of this song before, which I'm sure surprises you tremendously.

I liked Dick Brave & The Backbeats, but one would need to be deaf not to discern how much they were influenced by Brian Setzer and The Stray Cats. Really, they sounded like a Stray Cats tribute band. (Not a bad thing.)

The ReBeatles Project also sounded like a tribute band, but I'm not quite sure which band they were channeling. Rush or Queen or Led Zeppelin, I think.

By now, everyone knows that I think The Beatles are one of the most overrated bands of all time. (Although no one tops U2 in the 'Overrated' Department.) But truth be told, I do like the EARLY Beatles sound, when they were actually recording some original and groundbreaking stuffs. (Before they started ripping off more talented artists - namely Dylan and Brian Wilson.) So, I actually dug what The ReBeatles Project did with the song. They definitely have that ZZ Top (or is it Deep Purple?) imitation down pat.

But... give my vote to the "Stella By Starlight" Trio, and bring me a Martini (with three olives). And keep 'em coming because my doctor says I must have ten of them an hour, and I'm sure you wouldn't want my death on your conscience, wouldja?

Really fun, Fun, FUN Battle, Mary! Thanks! I enjoyed it.

    1. What?!? I am utterly (or is the udderly) shocked! I know you turned off the radio in the early 80's and tuned out the 'new' stuff for us (ahem) youngsters. But Grandpa, you really should listen to some of P!nk's songs. There's a certain 'honesty' about her songs that I like. You don't have to listen to her 24/7... just once in a while, to get an appreciation for her.

I was truly gobsmacked when I stumbled upon one of the videos in the battle, and I knew right then and there - that this here would be a fun one :) You know that feeling you get when you put together a battle and you just feel good? Yeah. That's how this one felt.

      >>,,,(with three olives). And keep 'em coming because my doctor says I must have ten of them an hour

How's about I just bring you the jar and you can have as many olives as you want!

  5. The ReBeatles Project gets my vote

  6. I vote for Dick Brave because they had that big band sound which works well with the song even though they must love Stray cats. The Rebeatles was good but Stella, although her jazzy rendition was fine, that is no party. Her rendition is for a bar that has seen one too many parties and all that is left are drunks, smoke and the smell of fun seeping out the cracks of the door

  7. Whoa! I LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! Every time Pink's version comes on, I Crank.It.Up! It is such a fun song!
As for your battle, now that was some good fun too! I loved how all three of your contenders presented so differently.

Dick Brave and the Backbeats was a groovy little ditty: this is going to sound weird but they sound like the kind of band that would've played a wild celebration party for McMann & Tate after Darrin Stephens and Larry Tate landed that big advertising client they worked so hard to get, despite Samantha's witchy family members wreaking havoc for the mortal husband. I can see Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur) dancing to this band and Larry Tate getting sauced on martinis. Dick Brave is very deco-y, to my ears. It's snazzy and I like it.

But I really liked the second one, the Re-Beatles Project. I loved their video too. I liked how they pulled Pink's lyrics and incorporated them into a Beatles type sound.

The version by the Stella Starlight Trio (cool name!) was certainly good, the vocals were smokey and the music jazzy, but it just didn't work for me. Probably because when I hear this song by Pink, it gets me all up and in a party mood. The party the Stella Starlight Trio are talking about sounds kinda boring to me. Like one of those parties held by a bunch of know-it-all intellectuals where everyone is just kinda standing around and nothing much is happening and no one is really having fun because they just don't know how to have fun. Bust out some fun People! hehe

Anyway, I LOVED your battle Mary. Sooo cool. My vote is going to those Re-Beatles dudes.

....so you better get this party started....Going to bed with this earworm.
A perfect song for me to hear as I sit here on a Saturday night... :)

So good to be hanging with you again!! Sorry it took me so long to get over here. Everything is unpredictable at the moment...
    talk soon,

    1. Hey there Michele!

The visual you created for Dick Brave was rather good. I can see them playing this at such a party. I actually pictured Elizabeth Montgomery doing the Mashed Potato. Fun scene!

This battle has been a very nice surprise. I'm glad that I stumbled upon the videos at just the right time.

Hope things are calming down some at home.
