#BattleOfTheBands : Ain't That A Shame

Time for another round of Battle of the Bands!

I have another fun battle in store for you today - At least I believe it to be.   The song is a fun one, and you can’t help but smile and maybe even wiggle in your seat while listening to it.  And the contenders are all great musicians!

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

About the song:
Written in 1955 by Fats Domino and Dave Bartholomew, "Ain't That A Shame" was a big hit for Fats Domino. The song reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart and #10 on the pop chart. Rolling Stone has ranked the song at #438 on the magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Pat Boone recorded the song, which brought attention to the song, and soon mainstream artists started covering more of Fats Domino's songs.

Please listen to each of the three contenders and cast your vote in the comments for the one that you enjoyed the most.

Contender #1 - Paul McCartney

Contender #2 - John Lennon

Contender #3 - Cheap Trick

Now, to repeat myself again:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for Paul McCartney, John Lennon, or Cheap Trick!
Voting will end on Friday, June 7  with results being posted on Saturday, June 8.

  1. Both of the Beatles were fun, but Cheap Trick was serious fun. They were excellent. That's where my vote goes.

Well, I'll begin by saying Fats Domino ain't got nuttin' to worry about. Ain't no challengers to his "ownership" of this song here.

Prior to listening to any of these recordings, I figured that my voting preference would most likely go in this order:

    1) Paul McCartney
    2) Cheap Trick
    3) John Lennon

But after having listened to them all, I'm actually voting like this:

    1) John Lennon
    2) Cheap Trick
    3) Paul McCartney

I don't know what Paul was doing here but it was... not good. First, his voice didn't sound right. Ragged, off-note, off-key? I don't know, but he didn't sound to me like a professional singer. More like some dude who's had 3 too many Martinis on Karaoke night at the local dive.

Cheap Trick... yeah, well, this became one of their signature songs during their heyday. But to me, it's just way too much excess. I know there's a song buried in there somewhere.

John Lennon at least retained that old style Rock 'N' Roll sound. Piano and sax... good.

And everyone should get right with God, because when you find me voting for John Lennon, it's a sure sign of the Apocalypse!

    1. Hey Stephen!

I almost left the battle as a McCartney v Lennon battle, but wanted to drop in Cheap Trick just for kicks. I don't know about McCartney sounding off key - he sounds like McCartney to me. It's the keys that caught my attention in Lennon's rendition. And Cheap Trick was just having a load of fun with the song.

Man, where is everyone today? our numbers are few. We should recruit more participants :)

  3. I am voting for the pride and joy of Rockford, Illinois, Cheap Trick! Listening to Paul and John struggle through this one was painful. Cheap Trick sounded like they actually knew the song and had one hell of a lot of fun playing it.

  4. Minus the extra minute at the beginning, I liked Cheap Trick better. I thought I'd like Paul's best so it surprised me.

  5. I preferred Lennon to McCartney (as usual ☺). Cheap Trick was fun, but a bit too cacophonous. Sticking with John Lennon for this one.

Excellent use of the word of the day :) This battle is going the way I expected it to go. But, there are a few more days so we'll see the final results then.

  6. Cheap Trick was fun but the Guitar solos etc... was a bit too much for me. I am giving my vote to Sir Paul who was not the best of his best but I liked it better than Lennon

Sir Paul appreciates not being left out of the votes. You've saved him from a shutout :)

  7. I thought all of them were excellent! I hadn't heard Paul's before, so didn't hold any particular expectations, but I thought he did great! John's version is old-fashioned rock and roll that he nailed. That said, my vote, just over John, is Cheap Trick. Looked like they were having a lot of fun, and it was infectious!
