#BattleOfTheBands: Heroes

This year is flying by quickly.  Here we are in July and it’s time for our next Battle of the Bands. When I announced the winners of the last battle, Mr Stephen T McCarthy asked me if I had planned to battle a patriotic song. It would make sense, being so close to Independence Day.

My response to Mr McCarthy was ‘kinda sorta, but not really.’ And that response is still true.  When I think of Independence Day, I think of patriotism.  I think of Heroes - those who fought for my rights and freedoms.  Independence Day also makes me think of my sister, who lost her battle with colon cancer and passed away on Independence Day 1996. She was a different type of hero.  While she passed at a young age of 42, she lived a full life.

Our song today was written and performed by David Bowie. Inspired by the sight of Bowie's producer-engineer Tony Visconti embracing his lover by the Berlin Wall, the song tells the story of two lovers, one from East and one from West Berlin. Bowie's performance of "'Heroes'" on June 6, 1987, at the German Reichstag in West Berlin has been considered a catalyst to the later fall of the Berlin Wall. Following his death in January 2016, the German government thanked Bowie for "helping to bring down the Wall", adding "you are now among Heroes".

There are many versions and covers of this song available on YouTube.  I am hoping that I have chosen 2 compatible contenders, and that you will listen to both and choose which one you prefer.

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Okay, now that we've gone over the ground rules, let’s get on with this then…

Contender #1 -  Hollywood Vampires

Contender #2 - The Wallflowers

Now, to repeat myself again:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

  2. I like the Wallflowers a lot and figured that would be my vote.
But the Hollywood Vampires won me over with the wailing guitar.

First vote goes to the Vamps.

  3. Mary,

It's interesting Debbie mentioned last week the Hollywood Vampires have a new album release, Rise. I don't know if this song is on there or not but anywho, I enjoyed both cover artists. In this round, my vote goes to The Wallflowers. Good battle. Have a bandtastic week and happy 4th, my friend!

Yes, this one is on their new album. I've been catching bits and pieces of the album on YouTube this past week.

It's those little teasers of trivia that make the song even more special. Thanks for stopping in with your vote.

  5. Try again:
Hi Mary; You mentioned three contenders but I see only two. (?) Anyway, As Cathy said, The Hollywood Vampires version is on their new album, "Rise", which we've been listening to this weekend. Love it! ♥ The Wallflowers' rendition was good too, but the rich tones of Johnny Depp's vocals combined with the brilliant guitar work (how often do you see Alice Cooper play guitar?) is unbeatable, in my opinion. Vampires all the way!

    1. Hi Debbie!

Thanks for catching that! It was a left over from last battle that I forgot to remove. Fixed now :) I've been enjoying the Vampires and Johnny Depp's vocals as well.

  6. MMQE ~
Kudos! I really liked the way you worked this song into the theme of Independence Day for the USA, as well as a tribute to your sister. Very, very nicely done, my friend.

    >>... I think of Heroes - those who fought for my rights and freedoms.

I'm very much into the founding of our government and the fight for Independence. Those Founding Fathers of ours were brilliant - REALLY brilliant - men, and they fought an impossible war against the greatest military force on Earth at that time and won against all odds and against all common sense. It was, I believe, a Divinely-inspired and Divinely-assisted endeavor!!

I knew after hearing just the first 30 seconds of the second version - even before the vocals kicked in - that I would be voting for THE WALLFLOWERS. To me, Johnny Depp sounded a bit too much like he was trying to sound like David Bowie, and The Wallflowers overall approach just sounds SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL!!

    1. Thanks, Stephen!

I actually have two posts today honoring my sister. This one and the Under the Influence post. Guess she's been on my mind a bit this week.

I thought the 2 contenders were pretty interesting. The Hollywood Vampires being made up of older musicians (and Johnny Depp) and the Wallflowers being made up of Bob Dylan's son. It has that kind of 'passing of the torch' feeling about it.

Have a happy and safe Holiday this week.

  7. The version by Hollywood Vampires surprised me! Very good and I liked it but I thought Johnny Depp was doing a David Bowie impersonation. NOT THAT IT'S A BAD THING...I love David Bowie.

But when push comes to shove, I love THE WALLFLOWERS and in general, I think they're a little underrated and faded away too fast. So, I'll give them my one and only vote!

I just looked up and saw that Stephen made a similar comment. Well, it's too late to change now...#lazymonday. It's possible we agree on some things. :-)
