#RMF2019 #BOTB The Kinks vs Van Halen

We are midway through the month and half way through the #RocktoberMusicFest2019

Being the 15th of the month, that means it’s time for our next Battle of the Bands! I’m not going to lie - this battle has been done before. Stephen did this battle in July of 2014.  The results were so close (1 vote difference)  that I feel that another go at this battle is warranted.

As we are celebrating Rock Music, the song that I’ve chosen for today’s battle is in the Hard Rock  / Garage Rock genre.

Wikipedia tells us this about today’s song:
"You Really Got Me" is a song written by Ray Davies for English rock band the Kinks. The song, originally performed in a more blues-oriented style, was inspired by artists such as Lead Belly and Big Bill Broonzy. Two versions of the song were recorded, with the second performance being used for the final single. Although it was rumoured that future Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page had performed the song's guitar solo, the myth has since been proven false.

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, let’s get this party started!

Contender #1 -  The Kinks

Contender #2 - Van Halen

Now, to repeat myself:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for The Kinks or Van Halen!
Voting will end on Monday, October 21 with results being posted on Tuesday, October 22.

I’d love for you to join me in celebrating Rock Music this month. All you need to do is drop the link to your current Rock Music post in the comments (Don’t forget to leave a vote here, too!) . Be sure to code with html so the link is clickable.  (See the announcement post for instructions on that) And then visit everyone that has left their links.

Don't forget to come back tomorrow for more #RMF fun!

  1. The Van Halen version is really flashy and well done, but the version by the Kinks is the one that I rocked with in junior high school and it still sounds great.

    I vote The Kinks!

I freely admit that music is an art and is therefore subjective: difference strokes for different folks. And I'm cool with that.

But there are *SOME* instances in music where it is objective, rather than subjective. Like, for instance, I would sincerely hope to God that anyone who thinks The Sex Pistols are musically better'n Mozart will receive a "Darwin Award" right quick!! (And please bear in mind that I am NOT really a big fan of Classical music! But God darn-sure made me smart enough to realize that Mozart is OBJECTIVELY better'n The Sex Pistols - even though I've owned a couple Sex Pistols albums and never owned an album of Mozart's music..)

This Battle is kinda-sorta like that (but to a much lesser extreme). Yeah, yeah, The Kinks were "British" (tea is more refined than coffee, right?) and they were early innovators - blah, blah, blah! But they can't hold a damn candle to Van Halen when it comes to *THIS* song! Anyone who votes for The Kinks is a tea-drinker, and I will hunt them down, cut them into pieces, and feed them to my piranha... and his 300 mates! (aka "Piranha & The Blowfish"). ;-)

I like The Kinks, and I owned some albums by them (in my early teen years), but let's call a spade a spade: Van Halen blows their doors entirely off the planet with their cover. The Kinks sound like they've overdosed on the prescription sleep-aid drug 'Temazepam', compared to Van Halen.

Hell(en), even my old Ma (born in 1931) fell in love with Van Halen's cover of 'You Really Got Me' when she saw [Link> THIS TV COMMERCIAL.

If Van Halen was good enough for my Ma, they're good enough fer me!

    1. Hey there Stephen aka Mamma's Boy ~

I'm running a bit late for the party (typical, but also atypical) (I'm a girl.. I can be both!)

Who knew you were so passionate about Van Halen... or anti-Kinks when it comes to this one... Hmmm

Ah well... 2nd vote out of the gate goes to Van Halen!

Even though I really do think the Van Halen cover far outshines (and out-rocks) the Kinks original, and that there really ain't nuttin' here to think about, I was jus' bein' silly.

I couldn't turn people into fish food even if I wanted to because, truth be told, I don't really have a piranha and 300 blowfish. Heck, I don't even have a hootie!

  4. Tough choice, Mary! Van Halen's cover rocks harder, BUT, I have to go with the original by The Kinks. It's firmly ingrained in my memory banks, plus I love the instrumental riff in the middle.

  5. I never liked the Van Halen's version of this song and their video always creeped me out. I give it to the Kinks who are simply great

  6. Put me down as another vote for The Kinks. No one does it better.

  7. Mary,

After reading Stephen's comment, my vote goes to Van Halen. lol But, I would've voted for them even if I hadn't read it. Have a great weekend and I'm sorry for being a slacker while on vacation. I'll try to catch up a bit with you next week. ;)

  9. My vote also go to The Kinks. I am so use to the original version that no matter how many times I listen to the Van Halen's version, I perfer the original. Also, I need more synthesizers for Van Halen.
