#RMF2019: Deep Purple

Day 19 of #RocktoberMusicFest2019

My earliest recollection of today’s band was in the mid 1980’s. While I am sure that I had heard them prior to then, they didn’t register on my personal scale until that time. My friend and I were at the grocery store when the store played ‘Smoke On The Water’ elevator style overhead.

Wikipedia tells us this about Deep Purple:
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. The band is considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock, although their musical approach changed over the years. Originally formed as a progressive rock band, the band shifted to a heavier sound in 1970. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as "the globe's loudest band" for a 1972 concert at London's Rainbow Theatre, and have sold over 100 million copies of their albums worldwide.

Here are 10 of their songs:

  1. Hush
  2. Highway Star
  3. Soldier of Fortune
  4. Space Truckin’
  5. Woman From Tokyo
  6. When A Blind Man Cries
  7. Child In Time
  8. Burn
  9. Knocking At Your Back Door
  10. Smoke On the Water

  1. When you say “Deep Purple” I hear the opening guitar riff from “Smoke on the Water”. I don’t know any of their music other than that one.

  2. Steam, “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye”

A lot of people forget they did "Hush." That's one of my favorites by them.

    1. Oh same here. I like Hush as well as Highway Star, and Woman from Tokyo is a close runner up.

  3. I've been a fan of Deep Purple's since the beginning and have seen them in concert a few times, The last one was in 2017, on a bill with Alice Cooper and Edgar Winter. Sadly, it wasn't frontman Ian Gillan's best night. He was straining to hit the notes and took a lot of breaks. Still a good show, regardless. I love so many of their songs! "When A Blind Man Cries" gives me chills. 💖 And, who doesn't love those opening riffs of "Smoke On The Water"? Hush was another great one. Thanks for the playlist, Mary!
