No Satisfaction Battle of the Bands

Here it is the middle of March and it’s time for another battle of the bands.

Today’s battle is one that I’ve been working on for some time. I had stumbled across one of the contenders a month or so back and it’s taken me some time to find the right artist to match it up against.  And now that I have actually taken the time to dig a little deeper, I have 4 different versions of this song to offer up in battle.  Don’t worry though, I’m only going to put two contenders up for now and we’ll battle out the other two next time.

A little background on the song:

Keith Richards wrote "Satisfaction" in his sleep and recorded a rough version of the riff on a Philips cassette player. He had no idea he had written it. He said when he listened to the recording in the morning, there was about two minutes of acoustic guitar before you could hear him drop the pick and "then me snoring for the next forty minutes". Sources vary as to where this story happened. While they make reference to a hotel room at the Fort Harrison Hotel in Clearwater, Florida, a house in Chelsea and the London Hilton, Richards wrote in his most recent autobiography that he was in his flat in Carlton Hill, St. John's Wood. He specifies that Mick Jagger wrote the lyrics by the pool in Clearwater, four days before they went into the studio, hence the confusion.

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one with the name you are familiar with) Pick ONLY from the contenders provided in THIS battle.

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Now that we’ve got the formalities out of the way, let’s get to it!

Contender #1 -  Otis Redding

Contender #2 - Devo

Now, to repeat myself:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

For those of you who may be interested in joining in our fun - The battles take place twice a month. Once on the 1st, and again on the 15th. Some participants have chosen to participate only once a month - and that’s okay - we’re just happy to have you join us! Your battle can consist of covers of the same song, different songs with the same title, or even a themed type battle. We just want you to join in the fun!  Catch the link to Stephen’s blog to join in - all you need to do is drop him a comment on his blog stating you’d like to participate and he’ll add you to the roster of participants.

I’d like to encourage you to visit the other bloggers participating in the battle of the bands blog hop as well.  We’ve all put a lot of time and effort into putting together these battles and they are a lot of fun. Each blogger has a different battle taking place. You can find a current list of participants on Stephen’s blog (don't forget you can also request to join the battle of the bands blog hop by simply commenting on his blog that you'd like to join us).

Alright now… Cast your votes for Otis Redding or Devo!
Voting will end on Friday, March 20 with results being posted on Saturday, March 21.

Comments

  1. Never heard that story about the song origin. I can see it happening.

I got such a kick out of Devo when they first appeared on the scene. Never enough to get one of their albums, but I saw them on TV enough to get enough of musical satisfaction from them. They still sound pretty good to me.

But Otis sounds far better my sense of musical appreciation. An emphatic vote for Otis Redding.

  2. I got no satisfaction out of listening to either version.
Devo sounded like a bar cover band who only knew the riff and lyrics and made everything else up. Otis's cover actually applied some blues style to the lyrics which are necessary for this song. However, the band every now and then sounded like they were confused between playing Satisfaction and Land of a 1000 dances.
Otis eeks out a better of two covers for my vote.

  3. Trying this again. My original comment disappeared.

I am out of the hospital now but not at home as I am having some difficulty with steps/stairs. I don't have access to my computer but will tally votes when I can.

  4. Wow, I thought Britney’s cover was bad ...until I heard Devo. The Stones’ version is the best, of course, but for this battle, my vote goes to Otis

  5. MMQE ~

I gotta give it to my man OTIS. Even though, knowing the true meaning of the song, it seems kind of beneath Mr. Redding, in my opinion.

I actually bought that first Devo album when it came out. I was young and stupid then. But I wasn't SO stupid that Devo's one-joke concept didn't wear thin on me in no time flat. Their version of 'Satisfaction' is probably one of their "better" recordings, but that ain't sayin' too much.

I hope you are home soon and feeling better. I need to send you an E here before long and read you the riot act about "books & seeds", but I just can't bring myself to do it when I know what you've been going through and how un-100% you must feel.

I'm still praying for you every single day, Mary.

  6. Interesting story about the origins of "Satisfaction". I'm a huge fan of the original and have to be honest. Neither of these covers did much for me, but of the two, Otis was kinder to my ears, so he gets the vote. Devo sounded , well, rather annoying. Sorry!

Glad to know you're out of the hospital, Mary. Best wishes for a speedy recovery! ♥

  7. Mary,

I'm glad you're out of the hospital and hopefully you can manage stairs soon to return to your home. My vote goes to OTIS REDDING. I really don't care too much for Devo. Stay out of circulation as much as you can and away from people. I know your immune system is weak and I don't want you to pick up the coronavirus, my friend. Sending positive thoughts, prayers, and whole lot of love your way!

  8. Otis gets my vote. I like Devo but not this version. I hope you are doing well and have someone to help buy your groceries and other essentials because of this virus. Take care

  9. I'm going to go with Devo. Their version is different, which I like.

  10. I'm glad that you are out of the hospital and hopefully resting at home! I been getting more into Devo's discography because of Toni Basil's duet with them in the 80s. I been getting more into Toni Basil's career and I now know she is much more than "Mickey".

However, Devo's version sounds very much disconnected, which was Devo's sound back in the day. I don't think it works in their favor. My vote goes for Otis Redding. Miss the guy!
