The Cinderella Story without a FairyTale Ending

Today is Free Choice day at Monday’s Music Moves Me.  Today, I’ve chosen to share a Cinderella story that does not have a fairy tale ending.

Wikipedia tells us this:

Cinderella was an American glam metal band formed in 1982 in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The band emerged in the mid-1980s with a series of multi-platinum studio albums and hit singles whose music videos received heavy MTV rotation and popularity. Cinderella initially had a heavy metal and glam metal sound throughout the late 1980s before shifting into a more blues rock-based sound during the early to mid 1990s.

By the mid-1990s, the band's notoriety declined severely due to personal setbacks, break-ups, and changes in the American music industry. After a brief hiatus, Cinderella reunited in 1996 and continued to perform live, but never released any studio material after their 1994 album Still Climbing. The band has sold 15 million records worldwide, according to band member Tom Keifer's official website. After participating in the 2014 "Monsters of Rock Cruise", Cinderella again became inactive. In November 2017, Keifer stated that the band had no plans to reform in the future.

What Wikipedia doesn’t tell us is this:

Jeff Labar, guitarist for Cinderella, had a drinking problem. During the 2014 Monsters of Rock Cruise, guitarist Jeff Labar essentially ended up with alcohol poisoning. While he managed to somehow survive that incident, the band decided to take a break.

The lead singer and founding member, Tom Keifer, wanted to strike out on his own. His music isn’t terrible, but I haven’t heard anything super great either.

In 2016, Jeff Labar stated in an FM Podcast that he accepted all of the blame for the falling out of Cinderella.

On July 14, 2021, Jeff Labar was found dead in his apartment by his first wife.  On that same day, long-term touring keyboardist Gary Corbett also died.

I’ve put together a playlist in remembrance of the band Cinderella.

  2. Mary,

I barely remember the band by in name only. I'm not sure I've heard any of their songs, though. You're right this fairy tale doesn't have a happy ending. That's so sad to read two band members died within days of each other. Substance abuse is tragic. Recreational use of drugs or alcohol can lead down a path the person had not intended to go. Life is hard enough on its own, no need to complicate things further but I believe this is something everyone has to learn for themselves because it's obvious no one listens to the advice of others. I'm going to enjoy your playlist while I tackle the laundry. It's great having you on the dance floor today, my dear. Have a boogietastic week!

  5. I heard of Cinderella; I do like some hard rock but they were never really on my radar. How tragic that two of them died on the same day - just a few days ago and I knew nothing about it. My favorite of your set was "Shelter Me"
