Take The Box

It’s been a week or two since my last Monday’s Music post. Apologies for that. I’ve been a bit under the weather and rather behind in my postings. On top of all of that, my desktop decided to die and now I’m left with doing the posts from either my phone or my laptop. Well…. I’m definitely not going to write a post on my phone, My fingers are too fat and I simply don’t have the patience for that nonsense.

I did have a specific post in mind for today, but I’m going to push that one to next week, and bring you something that just came out this past week. I heard it, I was really impressed with the vocals.

Last year, Greg Kurstin (Bird and Bee/producer/Jewish) and Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters/Nirvana/Not-Jewish) put together a series of covers for each day of Hanukkah featuring songs done by Jewish musicians.  They are doing this again this year as well. The first few covers this year have seemed to be silly mimics right down to the videos. For example, the song for Day 4, Dave did an imitation of David Lee Roth in their cover of Jump.

For Day 5 of this year’s series, Greg and Dave brought in Dave’s daughter Violet and 2 of the backup singers from Foo Fighters.  Violet has really worked on her vocals and does an impressive rendition of Amy Winehouse’s Take the Box. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

For comparison, here’s the original:

That’s it for today. Hope you have a wonderful week this week, and I promise to be back next week with a fun holiday tune!

Today’s post is part of the Monday’s Music Moves Me blog hop, hosted by X-Mas Dolly, and co-hosted by Stacy Uncorked, Curious as a Cathy. , and Ramblin with AM. Be sure to stop by the hosts and visit the other participants.  If you have a MUSIC* post, feel free to join in the fun! *sorry non-music posts are not permitted in this blog hop.

  1. Mary,

I'm not an Amy Winehouse fan. She was too nasally sounding. Violet's vocals are better than the late artist. I'm sorry to read about your technology woes. I hope you're feeling better today.
You're in my thoughts and prayers, darlin'! Thanks for sharing and for joining the 4M dance floor, my dear.

  4. In a way, it's difficult to compare the sultry vocals of Amy Winehouse with Violet Grohl's brighter voice (I wouldn't know the technical term.) I liked Amy's rendition of this particular song better than Violet's cover - I think Amy's voice was more suited to this particular song, BUT I was extremely impressed with Violet. So I don't want to take anything away from that cover. Wonderful when musical talent runs in the family.

  5. Hope you're back on your feet and feeling a whole lot better really soon, OK?

Sad I didn't hear anything by Amy Winehouse until after she died. She had a tremendous voice...
