Petty Cash Battle

My past few battles have been rather subpar.  I haven't been overly enthused about them, and I am fairly certain none of you were excited about them either.

I was going to just throw in the towel, but our good friend Stephen T stepped in and offered a few from his battle list.  Hopefully, I will find my mojo again and get some good battles going. In the meantime, we have Mr Stephen T to thank for the assist.

Today’s battle breaks a cardinal rule for our battles. That rule is: Don’t use an original artist, especially if they are well known and the song has done well.

Mr McCarthy felt that the contender, Mr Cash, has proven himself to be a good contender for this battle so we should give him some consideration.

With all that being said, let’s get to it.

Contender #1 Tom Petty

Contender #2 Johnny Cash

In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:

  1. Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me. Keep an open mind and don’t be persuaded by the artist name.

  2. Pick the contender that you prefer the most

  3. Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.

  4. Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out.

    1. Stephen McCarthy

    2. Tossing It Out

    3. Mike’s Ramblings

    4. The Sound of One Hand Typing

    5. Curious As A Cathy

Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments! Voting Results will be posted on the 8th of this month.

Thank you again for the battle suggestion, Stephen T!

  1. You and I seem to be in a similar place with blogging and all. Your post this time is so similar to mine! Even to the point of using someone else's idea! Glad you didn't throw in the towel.

I like what Cash does with this song. He is a worthy contender in this match.

Still, it's Petty's song and I've always liked his version. Give my vote to Tom Petty.

    Hang in there!

Sometimes it's hard to feel motivated and stick with the program. Thanks for the vote!

  2. I am well acquainted with both artists and their respective entries. I find it a little strange the BOTB rules say original artists aren't required to defend their title for "who sang it better" competitions like this.
I hate to break Johnny's heart, but my vote goes to Tom Petty. He'll get over it. I'm sure he'll write a song about it or something.

    1. Hi There Anonymous!
It's really an unwritten rule as many times it's a complete shutout for the original artist.. We try not to use the original artist to keep the battleground fair.

Thanks for the vote and thanks for stopping by!

  3. Mary,

Great battle! I'm so glad you didn't call it quits. Special thanks to our good ole pal Stephen for keeping you in the game. This is super easy for me. I love Tom Petty but I love Johnny Cash's version even more! His voice and the lyrics speak to directly to me it seems. My vote goes to Johnny Cash! Have a bandtastic day, dear friend. ;)

    1. Thanks Cathy!

It is rather nice of Mr Stephen to bail me out. You would think having downtime between treatments, I'd have all sorts of posts at the ready by now. Ha! Turns out I like to nap... frequently.

Thanks for stopping by and casting your vote!

  4. I love Johnny Cash's version so he gets my vote. I know this song very well but I was never into Tom Petty's nasally voice. Johnny just puts so much heart into this song.

    1. Hey there Birgit!

Hot Diggity! Your vote brings this battle to a tie 2-2. Maybe Stephen was on to something with this one!

Ha! I like what you did there.

I see you have a tie at the moment. But I am here to bust up this tie (not to wear it, Sister!) And you know how I'm-a gonna bust this up, don'tcha?

That's-right! I'm voting for TOM PETTY, and I won't back down! I'll never vote for 'The Grifter In Black'. (And I never say "never", either!)

I really liked Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers from the first time I heard them... which was actually a bit before their debut album hit the stores. Yeah, I got on that one quick.

I'm glad you're still BOTBing, and I hope this Battle "de-ruts" you. Or "un-ruts" you. Or... turns the beat around (..."love to hear percussion! ...love to hear it, love to hear it!")

Ha! I like what you did there.

That's me... always thinking about money. Mostly wondering where mine all went...

'Preciate the 'un-ruttin' and bailing me out for the next couple months. Even putting this one together I had an idee-er (but it quickly slipped away)

Petty also appreciates your vote, having to defend himself against the Boy Named Sue

  6. There's a lot to like about Johnny Cash's version of the song, but you can't beat the original. I'm going with Tom Petty.

    1. Hi John!

I'm a little slow to respond these days, but I figured I best get it done! Before this battle, I hadn't heard Johnny's cover.

Thanks for stopping in with your vote!

  7. Both legend artists. This was the first time I heard Cash’s version. Original, and he made it his own. That said, Petty has always been one of my favorites and everything he did I love. I’ve heard him sing it live and love this song. Petty has my vote.

I'd give anything to hear either one of them sing this live. No matter what Stephen says, Cash is talented in his own right.

      Thanks for the vote!

  8. Hi Mary, blogging has become difficult for many of us, it seems. I have to give this one to Tom Petty, the original artist, but Johnny gave it a good shot.

It really is a concerted effort these days to put up a post, but I'm trying to be better about it.
