Under the Influence

Once again it’s time for Monday’s Music Moves Me

It’s free choice week here at Monday’s Music Moves Me. I would be remiss if I didn’t do a tribute post for Burt Bacharach.  My sister was a big fan of his work, so I am also making this an ‘Under the Influence’ post.

As a young girl, I shared a room with my sister who was 11 years older. My sister loved playing the piano and she took a liking to Burt’s work. As such, I was subjected to his music as I was ‘much too young’ to have formed an opinion on music.  I am grateful that my sister ‘forced’ me to listen to her favorites.

  1. What a catalog this man left. I love all of these! (The lyrics of Wishing and Hoping are dated, but he or Hal David aren't to blame - it was a product of those times).

  2. MMQE ~

Burt sure could write a catchy song, and that Carpenter gal sure could sing! And she warn't bad lookin', either. If only I had been born some years earlier... Ahhh... what a missed opportunity.

Real nice playlist, Mary, Mary, Quite Extraordinary!

I learned a couple cool things here: 1) I never realized that Bacharach was one of the writers of 'The Look O' Love'. But it has so much of that Bacharach sound stamp all over it that I'm kind of ashamed not to have realized on my own that it was one of Burt's. I've always loved it, and haven't heard a bad version of it yet.

    2) I also did not know that Bacharach was responsible for 'Arthur's Theme'. I've always liked that song, and always loved the movie, which I consider to be on the very short list of funniest movies ever made. The Boys and I had a lot of fun drinking along with 'Arthur', and we quoted the hell out that movie for years and years:

    "MY HUSBAND HAS A GUN!!!"

"Would you forget the moose... for a moment?!!"

And here are two that I still use on a semi-regular basis:

    "PEANUTS!!!"

    "You're such a hedge!"

MMQE, thanks for this stroll down 'Amnesia Lane'. Ah cain't 'splain it, but suddenly I has the urge to make a Martini (stirred, not shaken!)

  3. Mary,

You not only pulled a good collection of love songs into your list but one that hails the remarkable legacy of Burt Bacharach. Good ole Burt is a long favorite songwriter of mine. I didn't know he had passed until this week. The world has lost a great songwriter. Thanks for joining the 4M party. Have a boogietastic week, my dear!
