Rocktober 9th!
Today our song is: More Than A Feeling by Boston
Wikipedia tells us this about the song:
"More Than a Feeling" is a song by the American rock band Boston, released as the lead single from the band's 1976 debut album by Epic Records in September 1976, with "Smokin'" as the B-side. Tom Scholz wrote the whole song.
"More than a Feeling" took Scholz five years to complete. Scholz wrote the lyrics based on the idea of losing someone close, and on the way in which music can connect a person to memories of the past. Though not based on any specific event in Scholz's life, he did take the name Marianne from his cousin. It is one of six songs (five of which eventually appeared on the Boston album) that he worked on in his basement from 1968 to 1975, before Boston got its record contract.
Just a reminder that the songs that I am bringing to you this month are based on some survey from some website (I don’t even recall where, so don’t ask) They had fans respond with their favorite Rock tunes, and these are the top 31(ish) I say ish because I out-voted one or two that I didn’t agree with in their ranking. We’re working our way up to the Number One spot.
Be sure to stop by tomorrow to see what is next on the list! Feel free to join in the fun. The more the merrier, I say!

ReplyDeleteGreat choice, Mary! Coincidentally, I just listened yesterday to 70's music Channel 7 on Sirius radio yesterday to most of the top 10 of American Top 40 from Oct. 7, 1978, and Boston's "Don't Look Back" was #4! Casey Kasem said that Tom Scholz got two degrees from MIT, and was working for Polaroid for $30,000 a year (back when $30,000 was a ton of money), but was working in his basement on his great love, music. In fact, he spent $23,000 making a recording studio in that basement, and from there he cut some demos that eventually landed him a record deal!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty cool, Arnold! I saw Boston in concert back in 2002 when I lived in Portland.
DeleteThere's a band out of Idaho Falls that consists of 3 guys - all with PhDs and work together out at INL.
One of my all time favourites
ReplyDelete"Lost myself in a familiar song" is exactly what this song does! I'm really enjoying these tidbits too:-)
ReplyDeleteI loved this song from the first time I heard it. We bought the album as soon as we could. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
