Call Me Battle: January

Here we go again!

Last month, Blondie beat out Tommy Tutone by a single vote. I’ve decided to use the same battle format here as what we are using for the boozy battles. That means Blondie will be heading to the playoffs and we have 2 new tunes battling it out this month.

Listen to these two songs with an open mind… and cast your vote for the one that you enjoy the most.

Charlie Puth

Paul McCartney & Wings

Who will make it to the playoffs? Cast your votes in the comments below. If you find yourself unable to leave a comment, please visit Jingle Jangle Jungle’s facebook page to leave a comment on the post that correlates with this battle.

In the event that you are new here, or you have simply forgotten… Here’s a review of how a battle works:

  1. Listen to each of the contenders. Try not to be persuaded by the videos. I like to close my eyes and let the music transport me. Keep an open mind and don’t be persuaded by the artist name.

  2. Pick the contender that you prefer the most

  3. Leave a comment with the name of the contender you have chosen. Feel free to expound upon your choice.

  4. Visit the other bloggers that have battles taking place. Their battles are different from each other, so be sure to check them out.

    1. Stephen McCarthy

    2. Tossing It Out

    3. The Sound of One Hand Typing

    4. Curious As A Cathy

    5. dIEDRE

    6. Debbie DogLady

    7. Christine

Are you a blogger and want to join in the fun with your own music battles on the 1st and 15th of each month (or only one battle a month) - reach out to Mr McCarthy to get yourself added to the list!

Alright now… Cast your votes in the comments! Voting Results will be posted on the 22nd of this month.

  1. I vote for Paul McCartney which has rock, blues etc in the song. The other one sounds like do many we hear today...drippy and one is like the other. There seems to be no originality so Wings gets my vote

  2. I preferred the beginning of the Puth recording, but overall I thought he was kind of wussy McCartney was being himself. His song did not sound overly original, but it was well executed.

Charlie was okay, but I preferred Paul so give my vote to his song.

  3. McCartney by a landslide! Love the rock/blues vibe and the guitar riffs.

    >>... "the Puth recording, ...I thought he was kind of wussy"

Methinks Lee just called Charlie a "Puthy".

Even though I can't stand this "modern" Pop stuffs, I actually kind of liked the song Chas recorded. It really wasn't bad at all; much better'n I was expecting.

And I don't believe I've ever heard this Paul McCartney song before. Was it a Top 40 radio hit? If so, I'm guessing it was a post-'85 hit, which is when I stopped paying attention to Rock radio.

I genuinely wish I could bust up this (temporary?) shutout for you. But the McCartney song just had all those horns, and guitar, and all that energy and I just... I just gotta vote for it. (Since you won't let me vote for Susan Dey anymore. ;^)

  5. I think I'll vote for Charlie Puth, just to help you avoid a shutout. I didn't particularly like either one.

  6. Charlie gets my vote. I really like the song and he does it just a well as anyone else. I don't think I've ever heard the plaintive song by McCartney & Wings.

Here's how this thing usually woiks...

If my brother, Judge Al Bondigas, just happens to be in the living room when I'm listening to the BOTB songs of other participants, I will axe Judge Al to listen and submit a vote. And that's why he's sometimes submitting votes (a.k.a. rulin's), and other times he is not.

In this case, Judge Al was at the gym while I was listening to your Call Me songs. Judge Al spends a LOT of time at the gym, and he could kick the crap outta any criminal who is brought before him in his courtroom! He's also the only guy in the gym who works out while listening to songs by artists like The Carpenters, The Ray Conniff Singers, The Monkees and Glen Campbell. Ain't nobody in the gym ever had the guts to make fun of him about that. And... neither would I.

Seeing as how this Battle is looking like it could wind up as a shutout (and I hate shutouts), it suddenly occurred to me that Judge Al was probably more likely to rule for Charlie Puth than McCartney. (He's more of a Pop guy --- LOVES 'Sugar, Sugar' by The Archies!)

So, when Judge Al got home from terrorizing everyone at the gym, I asked him to listen to these two songs and make a rulin'.

He wasn't overly enthusiastic about the Charlie Puth tune, but he downright disliked the McCartney song (he ain't big on the Blues sound). And he did say that the woman in the Puth video was "easy on the eyes" and he's always been a fan of Mighty Mouse, so... he made a rulin' for "The Puth".

POSTSCRIPT: As I was about to submit this rulin' I saw that Brother John has already put the kibosh on the shutout. But, hey, Judge Al's rulin' doubles the kibosh.

  8. I'm going with the crowd with my vote for Paul McCarthy for all the right reasons given by others. There's nothing too special about Puth's voice or song. :) You can save your time, there's no battle going on at CAAC, darlin'! Have a bandtastic day!!
