#BattleOfTheBands : Crazy, Round Two

Howdy!  Guess what day it is?!?

If you guessed it was Battle of the Bands day, then you guessed correctly!

We’re doing something slightly different here today. If you recall, the last battle here was the beginning of a CRAZY Tournament.

Today, we’re doing round two. Now, if you didn’t have an opportunity to vote in the first round, don’t worry - you can still participate in this round’s voting.

The non-winning contender of this round will go up against the non-winning contender from Round one on April 15, in a battle for Third place.

On May 1st, the two winning contenders will compete for First and Second Place.

Alrighty then.. Let’s do this!

As a reminder for you seasoned readers and to help out those of you who may be new here

Here is how a battle works:

Step One - Listen to each of the contenders. TRY not to be persuaded by the videos (unless specifically requested - in the case of today’s battle, listening is more important than watching)

Step Two - Pick  the contender that you prefer the most (not just the one who’s name you are familiar with)

Step Three - Comment  with your selection. The comment section has been set up so that anyone can leave a comment. I do ask that you please include your name, should you use the anonymous feature.

Step Four - Visit Stephen’s blog to check out his battle and for a list of other bloggers that have have battles going on. We each have different battles, so please be sure to visit everyone. I'll provide a link below the videos to Stephen's blog for your convenience.

Wikipedia tells us this about the song:

"Crazy" is the debut single by the American soul duo Gnarls Barkley (a group consisting of Danger Mouse and CeeLo Green), taken from their 2006 debut album St. Elsewhere. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in the United Kingdom, Denmark, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand and other countries.

The song was leaked in late 2005, months before its regular release, and received a lot of airplay on BBC Radio 1 in the United Kingdom, most notably by radio DJ Zane Lowe, who also used the song in television commercials for his show. When it was finally released in March 2006, it became the first single to top the UK Singles Chart on download sales alone. The song remained at the top of the British charts for nine weeks (which no other song had achieved in over ten years, and was only surpassed by Rihanna's "Umbrella" in July 2007) before the band and their record company decided to remove the single from music stores in the country so people would "remember the song fondly and not get sick of it". In spite of this deletion, the song became best-selling single of 2006 in the UK. Due to continued download sales, it reached one million copies in January 2011. In December 2006, it was nominated for the United Kingdom's Record of the Year but lost to "Patience" by Take That.

The song won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007, and was also nominated for Record of the Year, which it lost to "Not Ready to Make Nice" by Dixie Chicks. It was also nominated and further won a 2006 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song. The song was also named the best song of 2006 by Rolling Stone and by The Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop critics poll. The song was listed at number 11 on Pitchfork Media's top 500 songs of the 2000s. The song is also in the number 60 place in the list of the best songs ever of Acclaimed Music. In 2010, it was placed at number 100 in the "updated" version of Rolling Stone's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and ranked at the top position of Rolling Stone's top 100 songs of the decade (2000–2009). "Crazy" was notably performed at the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, with Danger Mouse and CeeLo dressed as various Star Wars characters.

Contender #1 - Scary Pockets feat. Dannielle DeAndrea

Contender #2 - Alice Jayne

Now, to repeat myself again:

YOU DON’T NEED TO BE FAMILIAR WITH AN ARTIST OR A SONG TO KNOW WHICH ONE YOU PREFER. You only need to listen to the videos and choose which one sounds better to you.  There are no right or wrong votes, unless you vote for someone not listed as a contender or don’t vote at all.

  1. Mary,

Good song choice, great contenders! I'm going with Scary Pockets ft. Danniella DeAndrea. The overall performance mewsicians and Danniella's vocals were a beautiful package. Alice did a nice job vocally, nothing wrong just didn't do it exactly for me but her video was more entertaining. :) Until next the showdown, have a bandtastic day! ;)

  2. Two good contenders with very different versions. I liked both vocals, but the galloping beat on the second one put me off a little. Please give my vote to Scary Pockets feat. Dannielle DeAndrea.

The second one does take a little bit to get used to. I had to watch it a couple of times before it kicked in for me. Thanks for stopping by with your vote :)

  3. Alice Jayne does an interesting take on this song, but the Scary Pockets version is way too cool. It's a great song that can sound good any way you do it.

    I vote for Scary Pockets.

  4. WOW! Terrific match-up, MMQE!

I really liked that funky beat by Dannielle DeAndrea, and I thought: OK, this'll probably be a slam-dunk.

But then as soon as Alice Jayne's version started with that Western Swing-like beat and the rollicking rhythm, I thought: OK, this'll take more than one listen apiece.

So, I went back and re-listened to each version. Hokey-Smoke! I liked *this* Battle much better'n Part 1 of this series! And I dig how the same song can sound so different based on arrangement and style.

Honestly, I could vote for either one of these versions - both are very good!

But upon second listening, a slight separation began to manifest. And, so, yeah, with a clear conscience, I can go ahead and break up this shutout for ya...

    Vote: Alice Jayne
(Now if only she'll lose that stupid, trendy ring through her nose! Repulsive!!)

    1. Thank you, Stephen!

You've not only prevented a shutout, but you've also mentioned all the things about Alice Jayne's version that I like. Although, I do get tired listening to the frenzied pace of the song.

There really are no losers in this tournament. I think that's probably why I decided to toss in a battle for third place. All four songs are strong contenders.

Now about that nose ring - at least it's not a bull ring! Why people do that to themselves, I'll never understand.

Thanks again for stopping by with your centavos.

  6. Oh, wow, Mary! Talk about impossible! I was certain I would prefer the funky Scary Pockets version, but the Alice Jayne's rockabilly cover edges it out. I think they are both great, though.

  7. Scary Pockets, definitely. I could listen to it all day. The second one made be a bit anxious due to the tempo. That was probably the intent, but I'd rather feel happy than anxious. Asking for Help to Avoid Burnout

  8. I have to go with Alice Jayne because I love the Western musicality (not country but Western). I could easily see John Wayne riding through Monument Valley with this song. I also love the guitar playing which was a standout to me. This was a different take to the song but one that works..at least for me

  9. First of all, this is a favorite song of mine. I love the Gnarls Barkley version.

Mark your calendars because I'm in total agreement with Stephen T. McCarthy on this one, lol (we are good friends with varied musical tastes...).

Push comes to shove and I have to go with Scary Pockets ft. Danniella DeAndrea. I love her vibe on that song.

  10. I listened to the first one first and thought winner winner chicken dinner. A very cool vibe. Then listening to the intro of Alice Jayne, I half expected to hear Johnny Cash. I was so excited for the song to start. And it took off with the familiarity of old school country. A different but equally cool vibe. How can I decide? Both so good. My vote goes to Alice Jayne for the surprise factor.

I'm pretty sure I've said it before here or somewhere (LOL) there really aren't any losers in this battle/tournament. All winners - just where they rank among each other is the interesting factor to me.
